Hey Guys!

I'm new here and wanted to know if I could get help as I'm looking to buy parts to build a PC.

I'm currently planning on going AM4 with Ryzen 5 5600 and RX6700XT, but would like to know what's the cheapest I'd be able build a PC for if I were to go AM5 instead.

Can anyone that's knowledgeable help me since It'll be my first custom PC ( Been on console ) and don't know too much about good budget components, especially in South Africa.

I don't know if Carbonite is the right place to ask this as it seems to be just for buying and selling, but asking on Reddit doesn't work since it's international and PC markets are different for different countries.

Thank you.

Going with secondhand parts you could probably put together a R5 5600+RX 6700XT PC for around R11-13k. That's for the PC alone, without mouse+keyboard and monitor, etc. It could easily be less if you get some or all of the parts as a bundle. Max should be around R15k for a full setup with the peripherals and monitor, etc.
I wouldn't recommend buying any AM4 parts or DDR4 new, you'll still be paying original prices for old stock.
If you consider AM5 then you'll have to add like R4k to that. Newer more recent parts + DDR5 is more expensive. Even more if you want to buy brand new parts.

Price breakdown:
Ryzen 5 5600 = ±R2000
B550/X570 motherboard = ±R1500-2000
16GB (2x8GB) RAM 3200Mhz/3600MHz = ±R650-900
RX 6700 XT = ±R4500-5000
1TB SSD/NVMe = ±R800-1000
650W-800W PSU = ±R700-1000
Case + fans = ±R800-1000 (might as well buy a case new though, some come with a few fans)
CPU cooler = ±R500-1000 depending on model

Total for the PC only = R11450 - R13900

You have to look around and keep your eye out for good deals, also pay attention to who you're buying from. If you want AM5, then add +R2k for CPU, at least +R1k for motherboard and another ±R600-800 for RAM, maybe even more because I see mostly 32GB (2x16GB) sets for sale and rarely any 16GB (2x8GB) sets for DDR5

Thank you. Appreciate the advice!

I just came across an Evetech deal for an AM5/DDR5 starter kit for only R7k (around R2k more than AM4 counterparts):
AMD RYZEN 5 7600 PRO B650M-B 16GB DDR5 5600MHz Upgrade Kit + Gamdias 240mm Liquid Cooler

It's a lower end motherboard, but it does get you onto the AM5/DDR5 platform right away. That's R7k, then you'll have to add the following secondhand parts:
RX 6700 XT = ±R4500-5000
1TB SSD/NVMe = ±R800-1000
650W-800W PSU = ±R700-1000
Case + fans = ±R800-1000 (You could even check on Evetech if they have a decent priced case with fans)

That will bring your budget to R13800-15000 for an AM5 build, an extra ±R2500 vs a secondhand AM4 build. This is still excluding monitor and peripherals though. Choice is yours, good luck!

That sounds great. Do you think the motherboard would last for about 5-7 years?
