When I was still running a fresh water tank, I would buy small cichlids and silver dollars etc, then when they get too big I could go back to the pet store, sell them back and get small ones again and start over. Have you tried seeing if your local pet store is happy to buy them back/ exchange for small boi's?

I tried, but they want to give me next to nothing for them.
I did do that with my bristlenose plecos and got a good deal way back.
