Customising my Xbox V2 Controllers

Well since I’m a Liverpool supporter and I already have a red controller, I might as well pair it against the baby blue of Man City.

post pics of your journey ... just becareful with removing the side rails (those rear grips) ... best and easiest for me was to get my fingers on the upper inside edge and pop some clips open ....

then move to the outer edge of the rail and pop them out

I've already taken the controllers apart, rather ungently and I could see some rail damage. The way I see it is that even if I break the controller, they are already broken and I can transfer the painted panels to a new controller and have a nice mixture of colours.

did you complete doing this ?

So I did a rough sanding, primer and pink spray this weekend and I can honestly say that it looks terrible.

I over-sprayed the hell out of the pink. I need to sand it again and respray it.

So I did a rough complete and it isn’t great but I needed a second controller for a mate to use for FIFA 19. Some white patches but hey

need to inspect and post some pics of mines to see how it's holding up. wife's been using the Xbox quite often ... myself as well so it's seen some good use

Damn the job looks premium as ###, nicely done

Agreed. Very well executed.

I think the quality primer makes a world of difference, as the paint clings to it.

I’d like to get another colour and paint the other controller something else but for now I’ve painted my SSD in the same baby pink.

If I could suggest one thing about this mod, go for a more solid colour rather than a ‘baby’ colour as the paint seems to work better.

I might get a navy next time. I think it’ll look lit fam.

You are correct on a good primer. The one i used was an almost R300 primer (which was in the cupboard when I needed to paint something in the past). Also i did wetsand the primer prior to applying the first coat of paint and wetsanded the first coat on the pink controller before apply second coat

OCD some ? ... yes

The end result is flawless. Honestly one will think it was bought like this

any flaws you think you might see are just dust specs. and with the close up the texture is exaggerated

I got the same primer and paint as you did. I was impressed with the primer as it covers the area nicely and dries very quickly with a nice finish.
I was shocked at the price (I paid less than you did but I can't remember how much).

In the end, I didn't even bother sanding the second controller as I went to Buco for the goods and they didn't have anything other than 40 grit sandpaper.

I took some 400 grit paper to my SSD to get rid of the paint and get through to the aluminum and it worked very nicely. I've painted that and it's dry so I'll upload pictures of that. You really need to paint carefully, otherwise you get a crinkle effect. I learnt that with my first controller painting exercise. I need to sand it again.

It's really cool though that I have a working custom controller and it wasn't hard to do.

I went light on the coats ... and was not totally concerned about making sure I cover every single spot on the controller in my first coat

I rather focussed on technique and distance to the controller

yeah I have automotive grade sanding paper at home and used that ... the primer I paid like r260 odd if I recalled :(

I didn't focus on the technique and that lead to a very shoddy paint job. You clearly did an excellent job and your technique was great.

If anyone else wants to do this, focus way more on putting less paint on the item in one go and do multiple small applications.

Yeah it's great man, it's a bummer about that smudge mark but otherwise it's fantastic!

Easy to sand and lightly respray. Use 1200+ grit paper as to make less of a dent.
