Hello Carbies

So, I think the title says everything.
I have Asus M16 laptop, and 2nd NVME slot is populated with 2TB nvme (Addlink I think), and most games and desktop files are stored in there.
But frequently (I mean really.. at least 1 time every hour) drive just disappears and error msg pop up saying the drive is not available.
Obviously Desktop files disappears (I use this second drive to store desktop files), and the game I was playing also crashes because the drive is gone...

So now I am just wondering, and would like to check with anyone who had similar experience,,, can the drive compatibility cause this kind of problem?
After the drive disappears, restart do fix the problem, but 1 in 10 times, drive is still missing, and another restart mostly fixes... (never had 3 restart yet)

Few things I have done:
1. Thought it is heat issue, so added front and back thermal pad on the drive
2. Reinstalled the drive, just to get rid of poor install (contact) - just in case
3. Checked drivers
4. Checked event history, strangely no trace of any error when the drive disappears,,,

Thanks in advance guys,, any comment or help is really appreciated.

How is the drive initialized and controlled?

Installed fresh drive, partitioned into 3.
1TB (game), 900Gb (desktops + some data), small last bit using bitlocker (around 10Gb I think) using as a vault drive for some documents.

Is the drive set to RAID/AHCI and is it MBR/GPT?

My guess is that it's a powersaving incompatibility that causes it to drop off the PCIe bus. That should give you a starting point for google.

Does this happen when you eGPU is disconnected? Not sure how many PCIe lanes your system uses in its current config.

Can you try the drive on another PC to see if the issue is happening there as well?

Could be what @P1000 is saying that the power settings is putting the PCie connector off

Or it could be a faulty drive

or it could be a fault port on the laptop

Thanks, hmm, I think my power profile is set to "no power saving" (individual setting page, I changed from 10min to "No"). But this raises point also, let me google and see what I can find. Thanks

I think it did happen regardless of eGPU connection (past few days I have not used eGPU). When I have some times, let me check on PCIe lane counts etc. Thanks for that. Never thought in that direction.

1. I have tried to plug it in my ITX, and as far as I can tell it worked without any problems.
2. Yes, will have a look at that side when I get home. Thanks
3. Possible, but given point 1 works (as far as I can tell)... RMA could be hard I guess??...
4. Very possible, I thought this was the problem. But then my 512Gb NVME (gen 3) worked 100%. 2TB is Gen 4 but laptop m.2 slot is gen 4 edition. -Edit: 512Gb nvme is from intel. Thus the compatibility thought came up

Quick update on this,,,
So, have checked power savings + PCIe etc, and it looked it was working in the beginning, but did not solve the problem... (it was a good try, at least after changing it, I could use the drive almost 4hours before the crash happened. So power was one of the frequent problem, thanks @P1000 )
And as black friday was around the corner,, well decided to go with "well known brand" option.
So far did not have any problem. So yeah possibly it was due to compatibility on power management side.....

Thanks everyone who commented!👍
