Hi All

Been a while since I've looked into anything PC related... so my server got hit by Eskom's load shedding which took out my CPU, Mobo and RAM (and psu). Now I'm in the market for a new system, Being out of the PC master race for the last 4-5 years, I'm not too sure what to look for in a system.

I was told the replacement of my existing server CPU and mobo equivalent would be the Intel 9900k or the AMD threadripper 2920x process

What are your guys thoughts on these two CPU's? Why would you pick one over the other?

In terms of temps, price and processing. Also in terms of drivers...

Thanks in advance

Long time....

2920x - Quad channel + more threads, so if workload is "server" / workstation specific with light to no gaming it would be the choice here. This one also has way more PCIe lanes so if you need those lanes for storage/raid's, its more of a no-brainer.
9900k - Clocks like a mofo, fantastic for gaming (but with proper Z390 boards at unlocked TDP). I would get this if you want to game more than work on the machine.

With both you will need some serious cooling (360+ AIO at least) and airflow (for those VRM's), so if you don't have that already that will be an additional outlay that might push the 2920x out of contention as the board+CPU might cost more.

Hi.

I can only really speak for the AMD 2920x as i have one for just over a month now.

Its a great cpu i can play any game full graphics @ 1080p (i only have 1080p monitor so can't test 1440p ect.) I had a AMD 8150 cpu and since the Threadripper my 1070gtx get's double the fps.

The Threadripper cpu's is more server\workstation orientated but got no problem running any games you throw at it.
I have a cooler master 280 liquid cooler thats doing a good job. today is a very hot day and temps is max 59 deg under normal load, with benchmarking it goes to 70deg.
The Threadripper is also more expensive than the 9900k.

I will leave you some benchmark numbers that me and my friend are getting on Cinebench.

What cpu did you have before?

Do you need a server CPU with a lot of threads? What are you using it for?

was a 3820

Ran file storage server and VM servers with: Domain Controller, Dev Box, Docker container, TFS server etc... moving to the cloud for this.

So I'm considering the following... move my 4790 over to the server machine just to run it as a file storage, get the 9900 with a MATX board for work and gaming machine along with a 2080 :D (yes got RAID controller for the storage)

All under consideration :D

Yeah you can do that. 4790 pretty much equals the 3820 or might be a bit faster.

I see temps on both CPU's run quite high - I have a custom EKWB ready for it.

Now it just boils down to costs...
