Any major accidents etc: Nothing major. Did have someone reverse into my left passenger door, and the entire door got replaced.
Pics:
About 2 months back my gearbox decided it had had enough. I was in Edenvale at the time dropping my son by his mother.
I managed to drive back home to Harties as the odd gears still worked fine. Reverse and even gears crapped out.

Anyway, it has bounced around Audi, somewhere in Midrand, Brits, and is currently at a gearbox specialist in Brits.
Audi said it was the mechatronics unit, and they suspect there could be other damage but will only know once the mechatronics unit is replaced. Quote to get going R22k.
I declined as I don't know what else I could be in for. I don't know enough about cars to gauge what I could be in for. So rather halt.
So now it is at the gearbox specialist in Brits. They were convinced they could undercut Audi and find a way simple solution. Anyway - they also say Mechatronics unit - but R43k. Doh! They do however say they think this is the only fault, but do not want to put their cocks on blocks over it - so I am not convinced and declined again.

I have since purchased the old Getz I got for my daughter when she was in varsity. She is doing comserv now, and earning bucks - so recently purchased herself a nice new car. I purchased the skedonk back from her, and using that.
I am weary of sinking cash into the car, as much as I love it. So my plan now is to crap it - but I know I will get shit for it if forced this route. I would rather like to know if there are other channels to sell my car in this condition where there is a market of car fundis that look out for this kind of purchase? Or is scrapping the best option? If so - any ideas on reputable places?
If I were able to sell my baby in this condition - is R150k a fair asking price? Please - n00b here, so tear me a new one and school me if this is over the top (or under something).

FYI

The Mechatronics unit is a common problem with audi gearboxes , had mine sorted for R14k. You can pm me if you want the number of gearbox place that sorted it. I'll say fix it then sell it as most people will run for the hills when they find out the cost for a replacement gearbox

If I could get it done for R14k, I would take the chance. This is the second time BTW. First time it was in plan so I didn't care much - lol. Back then it was under R10k!!

Updated op with pics. They are however a more "show off the car" context than "sale". Will do close-ups next time I am by her - or will drive through this weekend to Brits.

I'd say in the current condition R150k is a bit optimistic. Most would shy away as it is not stupidly cheap and they could be in for a lot more moola.

Rather get it fixed and then sell it. Not many 3.2 A5's up for sale either it seems, makes it a bit difficult to get an idea of the market price.

With all of this being said, if you want another Audi I will be putting my 2014 A4 2.0 TDI SE up for sale soon. It is manual though, but at least you won't experience issues with the S-tronic / DSG.

My next will be manual. As fun as this S-tronic is to drive - just not worth the hassle.

Agreed R150k could be optimistic. Hopefully I can get a more realistic price. Not keen to do the repair myself as I don't know what else...

I'm sure Vagbox in PTA or Geartronix in JHB can sort you out at a decent price without any post repair hangovers.

The Mechatronic unit failure is common unfortunately, and to kick you while you're down; it's also a very costly repair:( I know of a few people who have had their units "refurbished" for a lot cheaper (I believe in the region of R8k), however that is also a gamble as you never know when the unit will give up the ghost again.

As per a previous post, if you can get a new unit fitted for 14k, then that is quite cheap, and the best option to be honest. You'll not get close to R150k for a non-runner (most especially a luxury model where parts themselves are crazily expensive), even if the issue is purely an electronics failure. I know the 3.2L models are quite rare, however for reference there are A5's (2011 models) in the 2.0L and 3.0TDi variants with similar mileage to yours going for between R160-170k (blame Audi's ridiculous depreciation).

An update to this thread...

A gearbox specialist I took my car to, is able to get the mechatronics unit, drums and clutch kit, imported, installed and a new battery (car standing too long) for R47k. Guaranteed my car will be back on the road after this, so I gave the go ahead. Shooting through early next week to pay the R30k deposit, then about 2 to 3 weeks for import, fitment and testing.
I will have a one year warranty on the entire gearbox then, and will sell it in that condition.

The most I got offered as scrap was R35k. Ouch...

@DominionZA well done on getting it sorted, but I would advise you check their references and social media pages for reviews.

30K is a lot to drop on a dep. Hope all goes smooth and you get your car back 100%.

What garage are you opting for to do the repair?
