Yeah did a little digging my side as well, looks like it was both the z68 and the p67 that were forwards compatible, which bios version are you running? 2209 is the latest but 2161 adds the 3rd gen compatibility.

The best thing to do is test it on another system, that why you'll know for sure whether or not its the card. It may be power related (you might be extremely unlucky and the factory oc isn't stable) have you tried increasing the cards voltage through a program like msi afterburner?
The 670s scale extremely well with sli.
Two 670s give you almost identical performance to a 690 and for a slightly lower price(depending on which 2 670s you get ofc).
With 2 670s you will be able to play everything in 3D@1080p no problem (I would know :P). For the record bf3 is AMAZING in 3D
