Mweb reckons I'm a problem child...

We normally start throttling @ 15th/20th if over 50GB on our 1meg. yet its 1 up 1 down fibre. 2 meg is 100GB soft cap normally... and by throttle I mean half value of speed agreed upon. so 512k. and hard cap is on 100gb for 1meg and 150 for 2meg...

But I think these are old metrics though, these have been updated in the last few weeks... for higher cap type values for non-businesses.

But hey thats fibre, not local 1meg down 0.2up adsl.. lol.

Go drunk, you're home... I can only guess you're posting in the wrong thread :D

Well I just hear beeping about "throttling", So I gave info from ISP side of things. Also hear more beeping about how no one is satisfied with fair usage limits? and whomever is to blame for enabling the throttling.

You used it (and not denying you used it), hence you are throttled. If you are unhappy that you are being throttled when @ 10GB where Telkommen should only start throttling @ 50GB then take it up with them? If you cant do that and they only give you a reply like "ehhh, I don't know" they change service provider and stop moaning? simple.

AFAIK its normally:
Total drawable on best case per month, divide that by half and thats in theory your MAX Cap before being throttled, or SOFT CAP in other words. Now normally ADSL based is minus few GBs depending on line speed.

Okay lets take 1meg line.. taking into account of 85% of the speed flatlined in a month to compensate for ESKOM being offline and telkommen exchange issues or whatever.
That gives you +- 275.4GB per month on a 1meg line.

Now ISP limit before throttle is half = 137.7GB thats the in theory limit before they throttle you for abuse. (Quick peek at page 1 - hmm 140gb average hmm 1 meg line. Sir you have Soft Capped yourself EVERY MONTH)...

Okay continuing. 137.7gb is now your max max max before throttle. Note some companies take overhead on that making it either 135gb or even 130gb. but never higher really (yet some have been renound to let you go wild unless their system / exchange is taking strain). So now your talking about +-10gb over softlimit everymonth on average. = Abuse :D.
Hitting Softlimit every month = Abusing line = Your throttled = WILL be watched for further abuse = Sipho will set your SOFT LIMIT to 125GB just to be aspris to see if you have learned not to abuse the line.

Now that you are what? 5-10-15GB over your soft limit MONTHLY. and Sipho has legally throttled you after you crossed the soft cap line, why are you complaining again?

Another metric. 400meg line, capable of 40meg per second / 2.4GB per min / 144GB per hour / 3.445TB per day /
98.8TB per month...

Half = 49.4TB Soft Cap
Usages
1 - 52TB
2 - 56TB
3 - 49.9TB
4 - 60TB
5 - 57TB

Now with that You are throttled. you have excessively used more that the soft cap / seen as non-abuse cap, and you are now on the watch list. Simple.

Questions are:
Is your service limited to under the SOFT LIMIT threshold? aka 80GB instead of 130GB?

Does your ISP give detail as to what their Soft Limit for your package is?

Does your ISP enforce the Soft Limit by the dot or by +- value or by when data stats are updated for either (which could be 1-3 days depending on monitoring systems and triggers)

Things to note = "unshaped" is an irrelavant term if you've hit soft cap as shaped is normally for day and night instances where day is slow and night is fast or vice versa, "unthrottled" is a term that should strongly be used as "no soft limit" BUT should ALWAYS be taken with one hefty pinch of salt as most will say unthrottled yet they will throttle you upon line abuse aka soft cap anyway but may not before that IN THEORY soft cap has been reached....

They dont care if you legitimately update 350gb of steam files on a line with total drawable = 400gb, thus making 200GB the soft limit for abuse thus making 350GB abusive...

So for those that can pull 270GB of the 275.4GB a month on a 1meg line and NOT be throttled or warned or hanged, you are the lucky few that have slipped through the cracks and either get away with it because you sliped through the cracks OR plain the ISP doesnt really care much until they're under strain then they will likely throttle you.

DJ its not that Mweb are throttling accounts, they are within their rights as a ISP to throttle abuse behaviour. What I dont agree with is they literally are charging the same price on what was a premium non-throttled account 2 months ago. That and they have not specified their throttling terms, basically saying if you abuse the network you will be throttled, without defining what consitutes abusive behaviour. That is not transparent. For all their marketing malarkey in 2010 about freeing the web, its the non disclosure of things like this that seem they are appointing themselves the Benevolent Dictators of the internet : "Dont worry we know whats best"
And the argument that they do it to improve their network. I'm not sure if its my own negative attitude towards Mweb at the moment but their network is crappier now that what it was

So with that said it still stands. without disclosing throttle threshold expect it to by max of 135gb on 1meg... unthrottled means nothing in the current market to Mweb. Just another word thrown around wildly... As for pricing. meh thats company to company and as I have little info about the pricing side of things I wont comment about it.

Also wont comment on our ISP pricing on 1-10meg fibre uncapped options in Stellenbosch... But yet note its a game of chicken who has lower or highest pricing

Dj bud, no offence but I can feel myself developing ADHD trying to follow your posts o.0

My history is max about 10 GB pm.. This month 100GB and I am hard throttled.. Doesnt make sense. I am not an average huge user..just this month. They dont take that into account

I have been with Mweb since the beginning of 2010. In the past 3 years, I cant recall where I actually did less than 100gb in a month.

This month, I was throttled when crossing approximately 85gb.

Anyway, these stupid ****s are literally passing on loyal customers to the competition by doing this.

Yes I am seriously considering other options now..been with mweb since 2010 and have one for home and business. They are about to lose both accounts.

Openweb or Afrihost folks.

Go. They do shape. They don't throttle. So while you will get slow downs on your downloads on occasion you will always have 100% realtime speeds at least.

MOVE TO PLUGG!
Im still on the cruise...no speed restrictions ... and pull down a SERIOUS chunk of data every month
They are the direct consumer division of InternetSolutions.

My ADSL line is completely down now, but almost 90 GB and unthrottled here.

Don't understand why the throttling starts so low.
My Cable service here is all IP based, so I have no choice really but to sign up for the Internet with the TV service. As such, since TV can not be throttled, neither is the internet, regardless of how many TB one uses. I have no idea how much I use a month though.
I don't think there's a technical reason why anyone should be throttled anywhere in the world. Especially in SA where it's only a small percentage of the population that has internet connectivity.

Used 70gig this month and Mweb is shaping me so bad that it's difficult to just use the browser!!

Apparently there are a lot of updates running now and people are downloading iOS 7. Some exchanges are more affected than others. My internet it running full steam ATM on Openweb.

Yeah but with your side of the world how much is Cached on their servers? 70%? meaning only 30% of your use is actually new things if your talking about downloading... and that little overhead is tied in to tv services etc...

SA adsl doesnt have the resources to be able to cache that much so most is pulled via web out of the country... And in the end SA can only handle so much where R.O.C probably has fibre to the socket before you plug in to router. :/ aka we envy YOU in our bandwidth limited country.

I've done almost 70GB and no throttling on my MWeb 4MB package.

Anyone that is thinking about cancelling their Mweb subscription, keep in mind that you have to give a full calendar month's notice which means the earliest it can be cancelled is end of October.

What you can do though is downgrade your package to the 1GB capped account meaning you'll only be charged R29 next month instead of R199 (assuming you're on the 1MB package). At least this way you can switch over to another ISP before then without too much of a loss. I'm going to burn that 1GB anyway just to prove a point...

Just switched to Afrihost, not the business account - will upgrade if necessary. Thus far its looking good...

Don't forget their billing cycle would have run for October already, so you will be charged for the current package not the downgraded one. You will have to request the reversal from them.

Luckily I cancelled soon as I received the 'you're an abuser' email.
