I am in the market for a female kitten. And painfully aware of all the scams. Anybody know of a reliable legit breeder I can contact?

You do not adopt at the SPCA, you pay and they are full of crap with all the rules they have. You will also not find a Maine Coon at the SPCA. Have a look at Cat club | Sacc, they have a list of registered breeders.

All my animals have been from the SPCA and FORA, Never had a issue with either of them.
Yes, it takes a week or two. They do a property inspection which is to make sure you are in fact able to look after the animal. Also, Yes, it costs money but that includes their shots and if they need to get neutered/spayed then they do that as well.
But if waiting or abiding by rules put in place to protect these unwanted animals as much as possible is too much of an inconvenience for someone then perhaps they shouldn't be looking for an animal to start with.

@OP
I'm not sure where you'd get a proper healthy main coon kitten.
I looked years ago for one and most of the breeders I came across were running baby factories, those poor cats have had multiple litters of kittens. They were all registered as well but from what I can tell the only thing "registered" means is that they specialize in a specific breed. They still inbreed the living kak out of those poor animals.

Out of two friends who have had main coons. both of them lived very short lives due to problems, seems to be a common trend with people looking for very specific breeds. Boerbulls, main coons and even rotties. Soo inbred that they don't live very long.

I hope you find one that is a scenario of two main coons accidently having babies instead of a kitten factory.

Maybe more people would adopt if the admin didn't take weeks. Rather buy the cat you want from a breeder. No time wasted

As much as I've wanted a Bengal cat I've always ended up at a shelter.

This is Ozzy, destroyer of worlds looking befok:

I mean it's not against the law to use hair dye to make this little kitty into a Wish.com Bengal tiger

There's options is all I'm saying

As far as I know, the admin is to ensure those scummy peeps that will just take animals to sell off
1) sell off
2) animal fights
3) organ harvesting

they are put into place because of the bad apples, not just to cause random admin

No no but you must remember, any inconvenience for any reason is unacceptable.

The owner at my local vape shop has three of them. Next time I go there I'll get you the breeder's info from him. All I know from what he told me is it's fucking expensive and they have a lot of rules. If you don't let the breeder take them for all their shots, and have them neutered or spayed you won't get the cat's documentation before you can provide proof that you have done so. If you need to move or whatever and give the cat up, it must go back to the breeder and you get fuckall.

As beautiful as they are, they are even bigger assholes than regular cats. You're going to buy a very expensive asshole :p

In my experience Maine Coons are very friendly cats. They seem to have some dog-like characteristics. But they are expensive. Probably close to R10,000 these days.

Typically cat breeders will only sell you a sterilised animal, but I've never known of one that had any say over what you did with the pet once you paid for it. We've taken in purebred cats before from people moving overseas and they just gave us all the documentation.

The SPCA process perhaps varies from branch to branch, but the ones we've dealt with were always very friendly and helpful. Takes maybe two weeks from the time of selecting the animal you want until the day you can collect it. The fee they ask is also very little. It's literally nothing in comparison to the cost of feeding a pet. My recollection from getting a purebred animal from a breeder is that the wait could be up to three months, depending on whether the breeder had a litter already and they were old enough to leave their mother.

Please rather adopt. There are so many beautiful cats available. Yes, they may not be thorough bred. But do you really want the headache of that? My dad had an Ethiopian thoroughbred. My brother insisted (God knows why). He ran her over when she ran under the car. Seven Grand gone. Just like that. Not to mention thorough breds often have health problems that have been bred out of "mongrels".

I have 2 rescues. One is a Burmese, the other a Maine Coon cross. (The Burmese may or may not be pedigree, she was abandoned by assholes immigrating). They are the most adorable and lovable cats ever.

The idea of a pedigree sounds nice, but believe me, is an unnecessary expense.

Just a follow up. I don't know where you're from, but I just visited the Roodepoort SPCA yesterday. They have 2 BEAUTIFUL tabbys that are probably Maine Coon crosses. If you really want a Maine Coon, they look the part (not as big as a thoroughbred obviously).
They also have a LOT of other kitties, and they're all so friendly. Nearly every one of them came up to me for a chat. Had to stop myself from just adopting all of them myself🤣

Hey resident cat lover here, the brother wants to buy a Maine Coon and every body tells him to rather adopt not a Maine Coon.

Like telling someone that can afford a Ferrari to rather buy a 1973 Ford Cortina 3.0L bakkie, because that poor bakkie needs a loving home.

Yes it does. And yes it deserves it. But it isn't what he wants nor close to the same thing.

Fair enough, but sometimes the guy who wants the Ferrari doesn't know all the headaches associated with owning a Ferrari, or that it won't make it 500m on SA roads. So you advise him to rather get a nice X3 that will handle the roads, look good and save him some money.

That's the nice thing about advice. You decide whether you'll take it or not. No one is holding a gun to your head saying do this, or do that.

If he decides to still get the thorough bred, that's fine. I don't agree with it, but it's his choice.

Perhaps those that are that unwilling to wait a week or two don't have the patience to look after a kitten or puppy? maybe?
I strongly disagree. I've had 7 cats, six at the moment. All of them were obtained within hours of deciding it's time for another. When that feeling comes, tomorrow is too far away.

I had a pregnant female that lost her entire litter. She was just too wild and after being several days late to give birth had to go for an emergency C-section. All were stillborn. I'd really been looking forward to kittens even though my wife said we're not keeping any.

The next day said female was home from the vet. That afternoon I'd gotten a newborn/1-day old at best (the umbilical cord only fell off on day 7, so he was likely born that day). My wife had spent the day trawling Facebook groups looking for a newborn for me, and eventually found a lady who found him alone in the back of a delivery truck.

I hand-reared him, and that included waking up several times per night to feed him. After a while, the female that lost her litter grabbed him from me and raised him as her own.

The point is I have the patience to raise a NEWBORN, but not to wait until tomorrow when I want another kitten NOW. I have all the time in the world for my cats - they're extremely well loved and know it. All six sleep on the bed at the moment, being a rather cold winter, and occasionally allow us some space in the bed as well.

BTW, everyone who knows me and has met the newborn (Mickey - cause he looked like a tiny mouse when I got him) says it's clear as daylight that I raised him, as he's now a 2 year old, 3 month old kitten. Zero intention of growing up, the naughtiest of the bunch, more energy at his age than any of the others had at 3-6 months, and loves life to the full :ROFLMAO:

Well, that's a story and a half.

My reasoning behind my comment was the "wait" to get an animal from a shelter or the SPCA, which isn't even a problem. It took about 4 days to get my dog. And he came dewormed, shots up to date and neutered.

When I was in boarding school, I was waiting for the bus to go home and some girl asked me to hold a box and then proceeded to get into a car and off she went. Opened the box and there be a little kitten inside it, a wild one at that. Took her home, to the vet and got her some formula etc and fed her every few hours day and night. she's the second oldest cat among the three that I have and she also doesn't stand for my dogs either, she moers them and they run. I'm all for looking after cats or kittens. I too have a wholesome kitty story, Suck on that :p

Just not a fan of people who's reason NOT to go to a shelter or SPCA is because it "takes too long" which honestly, it doesn't.

One of my best mates (@Sevb) recently got two beautiful Persians from very reputable breeders in Cape Town I think it was. They even brought the kittens down to PE themselves and spent a few days helping settle them in.

They will likely know of other breeders. If you don’t come right/haven’t yet pop me a message and I’ll put you in touch with them, or @Sevb will😂

+1 on adoption though. My prettier half and I got a kitten from Cat Rescue about a year ago. Cutest fluff ball with plenty personality.

Cats are cool but have you considered upgrading to a dog?

How do you consider something that hasn’t figured out how to use a litter box to be an upgrade?
Think I posted here that our Rottweiler discovered pissing in the litter box... now that was not pretty. That said its better than the other dogs that used it for grabbing poo snacks and then coming to lick your face.

I sent you a PM for a list of breeders.

Just scroll pst all these naysayers.... and open your Inbox message from me ;)
