Morning everyone,
Okay so the last two months have been hell with my PC, its my first PC too. I built it from scratch and it worked perfectly fine with windows for about two hours at a time, then it would bluescreen. I will list the codes below. I will also list below the things i have tried to fix. Anyways, so after much deliberation, i decided to give Linux Mint a go just to see if that would fair any better and also to give me an indication to whether this is a hardware or software issue.
The PC also did not seem to crash in safe mode with networking, which reinforced the idea that i had of it being software
To my surprise, it works perfectly so far on Linux with no crashes (on windows i had 5 - 10 BSODs per day). So, if my assumption is correct, this is a indication of a software issue within windows?
I would love to be able to use Windows instead of Linux as i need to use MS office (desktop apps) regularly and also for ease of installation of apps etc.
BSOD codes:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (95% of the time it was this one)
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (about 3% of the time)
KMODE_EXEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (not too uncommon)
I have tried the following things without any luck:
Reinstalling windows 10 and 11 about 4 times, only once did it work the whole day without issue but then the pattern of BSODs returned
Updating all drivers manually with Driver easy
Updated GPU driver and used DDU in the process
Swopped RAM for a kit known to work with no resolution of the problem
Swopped M.2 SSD for a unit known to work with no resolution of the problem
Started in clean boot, did not solve BSOD issue
Used only one stick of RAM, in multiple slots, issue persisted.
Disabled all startup services that arent of Microsoft
Updated motherboard BIOS
Disabled XMP
CPU is running at stock settings
Cleared CMOS
Checked temps of system, CPU tops out at 77 C under 10min of Cinebench R23, GPU never goes above 68 C under gaming loads
My system:
CPU - i9 7980XE
MB - MSI X299 Gaming M7 ACK
GPU - ASUS Radeon RX 580 8Gb
RAM - Corsair 2x 8 GB 3200Mhz CL18
PSU - Corsair HX1000
SSD - HP EX950 1TB NVMe
Questions:
1. Why would it work fine on Linux but not on Windows?
2. Am I correct in thinking its a software issue?
3. If it is software, what else can i try in Windows to fix it?
4. If Linux Mint is my only option, how can i get Office 365 on desktop to run on it?
Disclaimer: I am a PC noob, this is my first PC as i said in the beginning and i would appreciate any help/advice
Edit: I also tried Windows memory diagnostic, no issues, although Memtest86 did find a few issues, think it was 4 or 5?
