Soooooo... Spotify...Tidal...FLAC...DSD...MQA

Anyone here feel MQA is bordering BS? I can't hear the difference between it and a good FLAC file or Tidal's HiFi tracks...

You need a MQA DAC to unfold MQA at the hardware level (to be able to appreciate it). I have not heard a MQA DAC yet, so can't talk from experience. That said, in some circles, your post could easily be the start of world war 3

i really have no opinion on MQA yet - i don't have any MQA capable hardware and i don't have the finances to rush out and buy some either so i'm going to wait till my finances settle enough for me to try it out - till then or until it becomes mainstream enough i can abstain (y)

So I like ANC (the good kind) and the latest iOS14 and AirPods Pro firmware 2D27 has me stunned. Versus my WH1000XM3 pair with the latest firmware the AirPods crush.

Does Roon not unfold the MQA stream?
I got a one month Roon trial and the music (tidal) definitely sounded a bit better but not enough for me to signup for a year.
The additional metadata that roon provides is just not worth the asking price (in my opinion - although Im sure others would disagree).

I use Roon. It's a great piece of software. I'm in my second year with it, and no plans to change in the foreseeable future. Roon unfolds at the software level, which from what I understand, is not the same quality as hardware unfolding by a MQA DAC.

Edit: Besides the metadata etc. which i really enjoy, and is worth the price of submission (for me), my Roon drawcard is its tagging functionality and Roon endpoint ease-of-use (and also the tight Tidal integration).

Grabbed myself these. Apparently they cost 300 quid.
IEM certainly has different "feel" compared to Headphone.
Also gLer takes amazing photos.

Congrats dude! Are you going mobile? (and yeah, gLer knows his way around a camera).

Dunno. I grabbed the ADL X1 because I needed a cheap dac. I paired it with a cheap Yamaha earphones and I was like WOW.
So I bought these to try them out and I am like Hmmm.....

I guess it's completely different from what I usually try out:
HD800, Stax, Fidelio's. They have wide soundstage, separate and quite spacious, while this IEM feels crowded.
Like going from one end of the spectrum to another. Sounds solid, details aren't lacking, good separation.
Mostly designed for good bass.

as pointed up above it wont be the full hardware unfold - and you wont get the full benefit of MQA - IMHO if you do want to listen to MQA files you need the proper hardware - so i'm personally not going out of my way right now until i can afford something good that does it and will jump on it then ...... also gives it more time to decide if its going to become mainstream - it is still all too niche right now IMHO and it isn't popular enough to be "normal" in most hardware yet

you do get IEMs that will be closer to what you are used to - some IEMs will surprise you with the sense of scale ie they sound bigger than a full size headphones (then again the HD800 are soundstaging and imaging monsters so to match that you would need something exceptional) but for music on the move at an audiophile standard you can get some amazing IEMs ...... but as a first step you started pretty high up the ladder instead of at the first rung (y) so enjoy

and yep Guy (gLer) is really good with a camera and he really looks after his stuff so you can buy from him with confidence (I got my Fiio M11 from him)

So bit of a random one. I recently got very lucky with a great deal on a pair of Fidelio X2s and a V-MODA Boom mic. Both sound excellent (another discussion entirely). But connecting the V-MODA's headphone jack to my E10K and the mic jack into my mobo seems to be causing a ground loop, as evidenced by hissing and static. It goes away when both are plugged into the mobo. I've got around it by lowering the volume control on the V-MODA, but it's still audible on the mic when talking on Discord. It seems to be a common problem when connecting the headphone and mic jacks to separate devices because the V-MODA tries to ground through both connections.

Any ideas besides strapping the V-MODA to the side of the headphones and using two separate cables, or buying a new DAC/Amp that also has mic in?

Can anyone recommend a decent but inexpensive bluetooth USB transmitter/receiver for a PC without BT to connect to BT earphones (e.g. Airpods)? I find a lot of generic ones but can't find any BT 5.0 and not sure if BT 4.0 would have lag etc.

Check the last post here. the news doesn't look good.

There is actually no good physical way I can think of to eliminate the ground loop without hurting quality when using that BoomPro cable and two sound cards. You would need to eliminate one of the Phoebus or onboard sound from the setup, or have one of them be battery powered, and neither of those are options in this case.

The most obvious option is a different microphone like the Antilon ModMic which doesn't merge the headphone and microphone grounds like the BoomPro does. Or connect the BoomPro and the headphones separately, then figure out some way to physically mount the BoomPro without having them electrically connected.

I should have a spare BT USB transmitter that I bought from Takealot. It's one of those cheap R120 units. You're welcome to take it for a while to test it for your use case. I'll have to dig it up.

That sucks! Sounds like you'll have no other option but to sell it to me now :p

Check the last post here. the news doesn't look good.
Thanks, I suspected as much. The noise seems to vary in intensity based on the position of Jupiter in relation to Andromeda (or some other esoteric thing because I can't figure out what the heck causes it to wax and wane). So I can cope with it for now.

Yeah if it becomes unbearable I will try the elastic band method to attach it to the side of the headphones. Failing that I'll get a ModMic from Amazon as they are back in stock, and sell the V-MODA here. I don't think I have high enough recording-quality needs to justify a DAC with mic input. So keep your eyes peeled for the sale thread...

Hi guys, my girlfriend is looking for a pair of over ear wireless headphones from 1000-1500. I know it isn't exactly audiophile territory (and that wireless has worse quality/value for money) but she wants something wireless for ease of use. I looked at a couple pairs but I'm a bit lost, it's been ages since I've really looked at headphones. Any help would be amazing!

For reference she loves these that I bought off carb a long while back (not special edition).

2 options I found (advice or better options would be great)

These looked decent, but I know normally there is better value for money than sennheiser?

I wasn't really sure about these, some decent reviews I found online but they're not very well known.

Sennies actually dont look like a bad deal.

Hey peeps,

So i'm looking to get rid of my gaming headset and dip my toes into the world of audiophile headphones.

Having already done a lot of research, I feel that the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80 Ohms are best suited to my needs/budget. But from what I understand I will need an AMP/DAC to get the best performance using them on my PC? This throws my finances a little bit out of whack, i'm hoping to find a "decent" AMP/DAC in the sub R1000 price range. The best i've managed to find thus far is the "Behringer HA400 Compact 4ch Headphone Amplifier" for R700, is it worth getting something like this?

*edit. Continuing to research, will not having an AMP and plugging directly into the jack on the PC really have a noticeable difference for an audio noob like myself?

If anyone could help point me in the right direction that would be much appreciated <3.

Hey,
It's better to put that money into buying better HP than trying to buy a R700 dac/amp.
At R700 it's like buying a replacement dac on a MOBO than a noticeable upgrade.

I'm not an expert on these things, but a couple of things to note -
- There are around 18 variations of the Beyerdynamic DT range. All of them have the same drivers and shape, so the sound shouldn't differ very much; it's more to do with preference on the other features.
- The 770's are closed back, 880s are semi-open, and 990s are open. More open means a wider sound so you feel more immersed in the music, but sound leaks in and out of the headphones more, so your risk of being distracted by or distracting those around you is higher.
- The Pro versions have a tighter headband and a curly cord, whereas the Edition versions have a more comfortable fit and a straight cord. (Not sure if the 770 has an Edition version, might be only the Pro, which I think has a straight cord; logic ftw).
- There are different impedances. 32 ohm works on phones and straight out of your computer. 80 ohm needs some amplification else the volume will be quite low. 250 ohm needs strong amplification.
- Your detail may be slightly better with the higher impedances, but the difference won't be large.

Overall there isn't really any reason to get the higher impedance. Get the 32 ohm, plug it directly into your computer, and enjoy. In the future when you want to upgrade your sound get an amp and/or a DAC, the 32 ohm will still sound great.

I can't comment on that H400 though, other people can advise.
