Is a decent air cooler not recommended for the 9900k?

From what Ive seen?

No - or at least No if you are planning on overclocking.

If you need to use air - I would highly suggest underclocking / volting

There are literally only 3 AIO's available to us that can keep it cool.
The best of the bunch would be

MasterLiquid ML360R RGB | Cooler Master

What case and what fan setup are you running?

Hi
I am doing an upgrade to my system now and will go with the 9900K.
You mentioned 3 AIO's that are suitable. I am not at the coal face of developments these days can you shed some light on the other 2 options?
Also on the Masterliquid, can the RGB be turned off, not my thing.

I see @PancakesZA is using a Nzxt Kraken X62 (280mm?) with satisfactory results so guess that is an option.

Will be getting a new case for the build that needs to be as big if not bigger than my current Haf-X which is falling to pieces.
Any recommendations for the above appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Try some
Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut

NZXT X62
NZXT X72
Coolermaster MasterLiquid ML360R

I generally avoid anything Corsair these days but you could also look at the Corsair H150i, but be warned. Corsair's new software is terrible.

Chassis, anything with good airflow and space to fit the cooler you want.
You could always brute force air flow through a case, but you'll need to spend some extra cash on fans and getting the airflow right.

I'm running one of these

I'll be selling it in the next couple of weeks, changing my build.

Good Thermalpaste can also save you a couple of degrees.

Thanks for the AIO info, will look into it and look for reviews on them.
The case will then be chosen to suite, but I will be going a bit bigger, or rather with a case with more drive bays. Was just looking now on pcpartspicker and have a few ideas.

re Corsair, I have had a Corsair AX1200i PSU for some time now and the Link software was a mess for a fair while.

late to this party ... h115i platinum rgb cooler and thermal grizzly hydronaught jam ... 5ghz at 1.28v. Temps are mid 70s max load using cinebench etc. In gaming 50-60deg max. Can i assume a lottery winner would be like 5ghz at 1.25V? amyone with such a sample?

So... I went direct die to try and get my chip stable at 5.2Ghz.
It's a bit of a potato but I can do 5.2Ghz @ 1.408v stable. (AIDA64 for 30 minutes anyway).

@adamr

Never got the notification on this ... I'm impressed and this on an AIO ?

Just going to add my two cents.

Liquid cooled - my choice would have been hands down a kraken x 62

Since I don't like things that pump , I prefer air cooled.

Air cooled - Dark rock pro 4 (Not sold in SA but insanely awesome , I saw rebeltech offers the Noctua coolers now maybe get the equivalent)

My dark rock pro 4 on maxed out fan speed with a 5.1ghz oc missions just under 90c

But if you leave the 9900K stock it does not even get near 70c on a silent profile.

I guess bottom line , daai pc moet shut up en nie op stuig nie :)

P.s get decent thermal paste that stuff helps as well not by much but still thermal grizzly is better then some cheap paste

My h115i platinum cooler on fans maxing at 70% front mounted radiator 5ghz on all cores is at 72deg maximum in yesterdays heat on a cinebench test. Having the AIO radiator on top will soak all the heat from the GPU ...

Bit of a thread revival but I will hopefully be joining you guys soon.
Hows the summer heat treating your chips ?

Was planning on going for a 9900K but I see the 9900KS should have reviews out tomorrow, and retail availability on the 30th (not sure about SA though) so I will wait a bit first. Toms Hardware got a 9900KS early and it seems to be more efficient/cooler than the 9900K and turbo's to 5GHz out the box on all cores but let's see what the general consensus is first.

Still using my Corsair H105 (240mm but thicc, 38mm ) so hopefully the KS will run fine with it temp-wise.

I cant say that the price difference between the 9900k and the ks justified its existence - especially with how easy it is to OC the 9900k to 5ghz all cores - i mean each board manufacturer has already published VERY BASIC how to guides to get the 9900k to 5ghz - honestly super easy.

Ive just resigned myself to the fact she is gonna run hot - I have a 280mm AIO and it still thermal throttles under synthetic benches - but im not sure if thats because my CPU is just the way it is or if cooling could improve :/

Looking at the paper launch of the 9900KS yesterday, it's nice but the limited supply will drive prices up.

Also, why would Intel give it a 1 year warranty ?
They say its because not many will be produced but the 8086k was also limited and had the full 3 years...

I just went and bought a 9900K today anyway. Coming from a 4.5GHz 4770K, even a stock turbo 9900k is a great improvement.

I will see what the temps are but since I only game/browse/watch Netflix in a room with an AC the temps should be fine most of the time.

Maybe I'll get a new case and fit a Coolermaster ML360R in it next year but the H105 will have to do for now.

Its difficult to speculate on temps as every chip is unique.

I really won the silicone lottery and can run my i9-9900k at 5.2Ghz all day, no throttle, stock voltages, with only a Kraken X62 with one 120mm and one 140mm fan (ITX build, the pump was in the way of the other 140mm fan, so I had to get creative..)

So depends what you get. If all chips were made the same, I would have told this entire forum what a cool chip the i9-9900k is...

EDIT: Ofcourse, this is with fans blowing 100% and running prime 95

I currently have an 8700k and have been considering the upgrade - but there arent any real reviews that properly support the move from 8700k to the 9900k. Anyone here that made the move that can share any huge positives from the fairly big spend for the upgrade?

Finished installing everything this weekend.

Running the i9 9900K at 4.8GHz, 1.225v on LLC5 in the bios (hovers between 1.181v and 1.2v under load according to CPU-Z).
VCCIO and VCCSA at 1.2v.

Case cooling is :
Intake : 3 x 120mm front and 1 x 120mm bottom
Exhaust : 2 x ML120mm on the H105 top, 1 x ML120mm top left, 1xML120mm rear

This is what I got after 20 minutes running Cinebench 20 and Unigine Valley, 27C ambient
Cinebench and Valley Test 20 minutes.png
Used Valley to simulate the heat from the GPU in gaming, as my card vents in the case which influences temps).
RAM temps were about 50-55C, likely influenced by the hot GPU air too.
I ran the test for another 10 minutes with the front and top panels off and it was 2C cooler with about 50rpm less fan speed due to the QFan custom fan curve.

I'm satisfied with the results, although I'm sure they could be better.
Gaming temps yesterday with AC Odyssey with 1080p were lower though, high 50s low 60s - very similar to the 4.5GHz 4770k I was using, but will see what it's like in much longer gaming sessions when I get some time.

I am considering playing around with the cooling arrangement though.
The H105 has shorter pipes than other Corsair coolers, but it does appear that there is enough length for the rad in the front so it could be worth trying.

The GPU, VRM, RAM and SSD temps will go up though with the hotter air circulating in the case, so it's a tradeoff.
Should be easy enough to swop and test, will update when I try it.

Changed my cooling a bit, moved my Corsair H105 radiator to the front of my Corsair 780T and added two Corsair ML120 Pro fans to run push/pull.

Upped the overclock to 5GHz at 1.295v LLC6, 4.7GHz cache at 1.243 VCCIO and System Agent.
Quite toasty but it passed a 1hr Realbench test at 28C ambient and didn't throttle or crash.
1hr Realbench.PNG

Been playing Battlefield V at 26.8C ambient and temps are around 70-75c so I'm satisfied.
I will probably upgrade to a H150i or X72 in Push/Pull eventually, but for now it's fine.

So Ive only had my 9900k for about a week now - but what I am noticing is that it is quite a warm CPU - I ran Prime 95 for an hour and it quickly thermal throttled on a H115i - and settled at about 85'C on about 4.6Ghz 400Mhz under its max boost speed.

My room has an ambient of about 30'C (its an upstairs loft so it gets quite hot)

I think I need to upgrade my AIO - but im not too sure what to upgrade it to?
I went to a ekwb mlc-pheonix 280mm, cost a bunch. Got better results than a h115, but its not life-changing. Just get good thermal paste, and try to undervolt a bit

Can everyone who posted in here, please state what motherboard they are running and how stable their RAM overclock is?

Asking for a friend who is suffering CUD.

Thanks
Running i9, 5ghz with hyperthreading disabled, 1.176v, with gskill trident z neo 3603mhz cl18 rock stable

Anyone here willing to lend me a hand to get this CPU to 5GHz (running stable) on all cores, and will this be possible? Take me as RAW when it comes to overclocking pls.

Should be doable on pretty much all chips. Voltage dependant. Great chips will be able to do so under 1.3v ... So try the vcore at 1.3v and see if stable ... Set xmp profile ...Leave cache stock

you ALWAYS run it at the OC on all cores? no issues etc...
