Hey guys, I'm wondering what fan you might recommend as replacement for a CM Hyper 212 Evo CPU cooler?

Mine is toast. It's gotten noisy over the past few weeks which I ignored thinking it was the case fan which isn't super critical but yesterday my system freezes and restarts and furiously beeps at me before entering a restart and beep loop. Removing the side panel revealed it was actually the Evo's fan and that's so weak I can stop it with my finger. So replacement time.

Requirements:

1. Needs to be available at either Rebeltech, Evetech, Wootware or RockinIT
2. Power
3. Longevity

Noise is a bonus, I don't care if it's gotta be rowdy but if it a quieter one that's ok too.
Don't care about RGB at all, can be single colour LED or even no LED, as long as it's not glittery luminous pink it's all good.

So what do you recommend?

And Inclidentally anyone know whether it would be an inplace replacement on the Evo or whether I'd need to take it all out of the case?

I know the Masterfan Air Balance pro fits the CM212. They have the tendency to hum a little bit at full tilt though.

That doesn't sound like proof that it's fucked though, pretty sure you would be able do that with any fan in a PC case.

Not this easily. And then it doesn't spin back up again. Also the heatsink is borderline hot. And holding the heatsink kills the fan noise/rattle in the case. So it's definitely that fan which is toast.

Hey man, being able to stop the fan with your finger is normal, the fan should actually go into a full stop and then eventually start spinning again if you stop it like that.
Best is to just replace it with the same model coolermaster fan, I just cant find them for sale online :/ - I read up a lot about the impact of replacing the hyper212s fan with a better fan when I had that cooler, the drop in temps is very littile if none when upgrading the fan. So any decent 120mm PWN will be fine! Just make sure its not one of those new weird round coolermaster fans, I dont know if the mounting brackets will work with them.

The brackets uses plastic clips that screws onto the fan with the same offsets as the normal 120mm holes, so it should fit most fans. I have owned 4 of the things and modded 3.

Yip I have had a few of these coolers as well, just did not ever use the new master fans with any of them.

In that case maybe you can answer the 2nd part of my question and tell me whether it's a replacement I can do in-place or whether it will require removal of the heatsink to get at the fan?

You just need to clip the brackets off of the heatsink, then unscrew those plastics brackets from the fan. There will be anti vibration pads that cover up the holes for the screws that you must remove.

No, you can slide the fan carefully out towards the open side away from the motherboard. Just don't try and slide it back in, clip it in bottom then top (otherwise you can bend the fins).

So that's around 42 CFM
Is that what I should aim for? So around 40-45CFM?
So probably a bad idea to pick a 95CFM JetFlo then?

I'd have suggested the Corsair SP120, but *** me, fan prices have gotten ridiculous. Just get any square 120mm fan to your liking.
Coming back to your system freezing etc, I would cleanup and repaste the cooler. I've run my 212 without any fans for a while in the past and it never reached near critical temps. How's the rest of your case flow?

I have not tried one of those so not sure how noisy they will be. Pity you not closer could have lent you an ABPro to check out.

Any reason why I shouldn't pick this fan?
Should be fine, just pricey :)
Have a look at this one as well

That's kinda the elephant in the room. I really wanna avoid that for as long as possible. I'm guessing the thermal paste is near non-existent these days but doing that much goes beyond my skill level/what I am comfortable handling.

That said temps were always ok before the fan developed it's noisy rattle, not stellar but ok.

Yeah it is pricey. I just like it's slightly more traditional still more squarish design. Plus up to 75CFM sounds great and much better than most others hovering around 40-50.

Your suggestion aint bad either though.

Reckon I'm gonna go far that Corsair. It's pricey yes, but at the same time it seems worth the price whereas the fans below it seem to do little to justify their premium over the competition rarely ever offering significantly better CFM or dB levels.

Why are the CM and Thermaltake fans so comically weak compared to Corsair's selection?

They are cheaper in price and use different bearings. The corsair one also uses a magnetic levitation bearing.

I know that's the case for the Corsair I'm picking.

But
That one slaughters the competition. Only that fan you linked to is a better value prospect.

Better warranty, lower dB, similar to better CFM. Especially the Riiing fans look comical next to it. Pretty maybe, but worthless.
And things are even more damning if you move to Rebeltech

I look at supplier pricing, cooler master have some decent stuff for good pricing. It comes down to your use case scenario, will you be running said fan at close to full speed? on a rad, case fans? etc. if it will just be running at some low rpm for a intake or exhaust you can use some of the cheaper options. I have some pretty cheapo stock coolermaster fans in my case and I cant hear any of them, the fans on my cooler I can only hear when CPU is under full load busy rendering videos. And then its still pretty low noise. They are 140mm phanteks though

I guess the problem is I always grade fans by CFM. Always want the highest CFM for a given price range. No matter the use scenario the more CFM the better all else be damned XD.

Any idea why fans have all gone for this ring design with just the corners? The reduction in plastic doesn't seem to have helped cost any. Is it supposed to have other benefits?

I have no idea why they design them that way now.

Oh yeah, if it doesn't spin up again it is an issue.

I think it is time you take that guy out the PC and apply more thermal paste. It has to be done. No but's!

Do you only have 1 fan on your EVO? It is possible to strap 2 on providing a more aggressive airflow through the fins.

Rather buy some second hand fans on carb than spending R200+ at retail

If I could confidently I would. It's more than time. Though conversely it's also time for a total platform upgrade anyways. Intel just needs to come out with the right chip or Ryzen 3 needs to blow everyone's pants off.

And yeah, just 1 fan on the Evo. I know it can do 2 but there was never any need, cooling with a single fan is sufficient for a non-K chip.

You can have a push pull fan config on them. Temps may drop with 1c lol.

EKWB_VARDAR added two of those on my hyper 212 black and makes a nice 5c-7c drop while gaming also replaced the paste with thermal grizzly
