HeaDphone Discussions. (Audiophile and Gaming)

Will be a difficult decision when Spotify offer HiRes. I really enjoyed Spotify before I moved to Deezer/Tidal. I subbed to Soundiiz so moving my playlists between services is a simple affair now. Decided to sub to Soundiiz until I decide which service I’m gonna settle on.
I'm happy with Spotify coming from Google's Play Music which in itself is really not a bad streaming service...just feel Spotify's GUI is a bit slicker...

Ooh have new toys to play with! The kids headphones just arrived from Takealot. Got them the Sennheiser HD200 and AKG 52. They're not home yet so will play around with both.

1st negative Sennies... Cord to short cos I sit about 3m away from my amp...they sound lovely tho!

AKG's turn will come after MUFC vs LFC 2nd half

So the myth of play time/burning in... is it true?

My old Sennheiser HD 202's can handle my EQ setting with no issues on MC24 but these 2 new toys are struggling in the bass department as in over colouring to a point where I had turn the bass levels down a bit. I does totally awesome in the mids and highs and sounds WAAAY more immersive than the 202's and I'm simply loving it!

Guess all those years of entering sound offs with my car makes me love bass just a little more than the "critical" listeners out there...

The girls arrived 30 mins ago and on their older wireless cans cos daddy don't wana give them a chance to listen to THEIR new toys:LOL:

I never actually subscribed to the burn in myth. It's the same as saying a 100 000 km used car is better than a new one of the same model. Totally nonsensical.

Most likely you are just used to how your old headphones sound, and now that you have new ones it's taking time to adjust to how you perceived music before.

Hence me calling it a myth... that said, they do sound much better as the time passes with bass level lowered... the Sennies just inching it for me at the moment

ROTFL
They should see me switching between three different headphones depending on the genre.

There is definitely an element of changing sound over time. When the ear cushions go softer, they sound way different. Which is why I get annoyed when people compare old headphones with worn out cushions to brand new higher end ones.

I know there's most probably not a lot of rap lovers here but Dr. Dre's 2001 album is sounding fantastic at the moment!

Recently started messing aroun in Foobar2000. If you get the hang of it, it is extremely powerful.

Loads of plugins and you can almost make it look exactly how you want it to. To top it all off, its free and powerful. It does have somewhat of a learning curvy, I'm still struggling. I have time to learn it while I build my flac library again though.

I never liked it at first, in fact I would use windows groove instead a while back. Now I'm on foobar full time. It has some nifty features, more than half of which I dont use, but it plays all my flacs perfectly.
If you find some cool features please share with me

Many would argue that a burn in period is necessary... And I won't argue with anyone on sound, because ears hear what they hear. If someone hears a ringing at 10k, and I don't, it does not make them wrong.

Looking from a purely 'scientific' point of view, it is most probably not needed for headphones. The factory test of the transducers would've already seated everything properly...

HOWEVER, I don't think the same can be said for speakers. My hometheatre system's speakers sounded drastically better after a few hours than initially. Had the same experience with multiple new speaker sets. Inching them up a bit in db department after every few hours.

between Foobar and JRiver i would choose Foobar every time - because it does everything that Jriver does and you don't have to pay for it

if Foobar is not exactly to your liking then lookie here for how to make it a little more exciting and easy to use ie reduce your learning curve a bit ;)

Foobar made easy (link to thread in AVForum)

go to the end for links to the newest skin - and there are newer versions of Foobar itself available for download at the Foobar website ..... once you have it skinned especially if you use Win 10 its going to look far more modern and it has a shitload of ways to add your DAC to it and get some incredible sound quality (same as JRiver)

and you can control it with your phone as follows

this what i see on the PC monitor

Foobar-Monitor.jpg

when i open the Foobar remote control app on the phone and go to the last page and open up a directory from the network or local PC wherever the music is located (ie on a server or on the local machine it doesnt matter it still plays glitch free including for DSD and most high res)

foobar-remote-1.jpg

then i can swipe left and see this page here on the phone to control playback going on in the PC

foobar-remote-2.jpg

then i can change the view on the PC monitor to View 2 which looks like this if i wish to keep the monitor on or i can switch the monitor off and keep on swiping on the phone app to control the PC because everything can be viewed and controlled by the phone ..... when you finish listening then you can basically switch the PC monitor back on

Foobar-Monitor-2.jpg

theres a lot to Foobar if you take the time to get it right - and you don't have to pay for the privilege of using it (y)

oh and on the top of using your phone as a remote control i even use my phone as a mouse and keyboard for my media playback microserver, heres a screenshot for the phone interface of Unified remote - this is the mouse and you can see the instructions on how to use it in the background - and the keyboard is marked with the arrow pointing to it

mouse-UNREM.jpg

so foobar and kodi and basically the entire PC is controlled by my phone or any similar android or IOS device .... the app "unified remote has over 100 remotes for all popular PC apps and also keyboards in different languages and if you are used to laptop trackpads then the touchscreen of the phone acts like a trackpad for the mouse

So I was rather happy a month ago when this thread was started, because I am in the market for a new pair of gaming headsets. But this thread just became too long in an eye blink. So can someone tell me if there were a conclusion yet for what headset is great for gaming?
I was having a look at Audio Technica ath-m50x, and wanted to know you the windows spatial sound performs with fps games?
I currently use Logitech G930 and I like the 7.1 but I sometimes feel that there is some oomf lacking.
Any thoughts or ideas?

EDIT: I have the ASRock Z370 PRO4 Motherboard. So will the on-board soundboard be good enough

There is no answer its subjective and depend on many of own inputs.

V shaped vs neutral
Closed vs open

And lots more options.

M50x work and is neutral but i think the msr7 is a little better after testing both.

I got the dt770 over both as this is my preference. Hard to beat beyers for comfort and i like the sound.

So test as u will need to be happy with it in the end. We can just offer our opinions here

Hey dude! Sorry for this thread moving at this rate. But it is the only place for us to discuss audio on the forum where a few members are actually active.

To answer your question, there is no best. The general consensus here seems to be that any half-decent open back headset would give you better gaming performance.

A few points to note though; if you mention that your g930 is lacking oomf what exactly do you mean? Loudness, clarity, bass, detail? What do you require in the oomf department?
Your onboard dac/amp should be alright. Not decent or good, but useable. If you do not plan on buying a soundcard or external dac/amp, make sure whatever you buy are easy enough to drive with your motherboard.

What do you need from your headphone? Personally I am not a fan of the mx50, but many swear by its performance. It is just way to bassy for my palette and there is no soundstage to be found.

Cheap and quick answer. For gaming I would highly recommend either the DT770 Pro (closed) or DT990 Pro (open). If you can afford it, a soundcard will be a significant difference from onboard. Check my sig if you're in the market, you won't find a better deal for a soundcard.

+1

If i purchased my DT770's 250ohm first my journey would have been much shorter, imo the differences are much less pronounced than the audiophiles would have you believe.
My 770's and HD650's get the most head time by far. Best dac/amp for a great price is a Nuprime uDSD imo.

@naughty your Foobar post was hugely informative, thanks. Looks like I will be having some fun with it this evening.
1005 in the same boat. If you've watching some of ZeoPathera's vids, you will see how awesome he has setup his.

I basically want a album view on the left, tracks just right of it. With a amplitude graph thing at the bottom. The a secondary playlist view, with playlists on the left, songs on the right and aplitude at the bottom.

With a nice dark backgroun.

I have the 80ohms version.

My bud deaththekid just bought the 250ohms version from ninja but when doing the cable mod there was some damage. It was sent to beyers in joberg so that good.

Hope he comments here when he gets is back.

Good thing you said "imo" because this statement does not hold much merit outside of that - imo ofc. Edit: depends what you're comparing I suppose. Some comparisons are day and night, others less so.

Well, we are all allowed to have our opinions. :D Best is for all to demo and listen for themselves.

ps. I don't think anyone on this thread can be considered true Audiophile... We are way too emotional about what our ears hear. I would classify us more as audio enthusiasts, or music lovers. Music first, then gear.

Agreed. Huge audio enthusiast here. Heading towards audiophile land, but that journey takes years, if not decades.
