Helmets?

Wont consider it decent if you need earplugs :p
I agree with the above.
A proper helmet won't make your ears ring from the wind.
I had the issue on my previous budget spirit helmet where if you turned your head you would get this annoying whistle that would almost hurt your ears.
With my new LS2 helmet that is a thing of the past.
Also did I mention the LS2 helmet is comfy as hell. You barely feel the weight of the helmet when it's on your head.
So thankfully no more sore neck from a heavy helmet when leaning forward on my zx6r.

I've read a few articles about earplugs and motorcycles, there have been a few studies conducted.

YMMV... My focus on the track is a lot better since I started wearing earplugs at the track.
I've always ridden with earplugs or earphones with music at a low level.

usually I don't like graphics on a helmet ( they remind me of an 8 year old with a R1000 sticker budget) but this is so nicely done

Yea LS2 makes some nice looking helmets, and I must say, since I got my Vector C Evo I have not been happier.
The helmet is absolutely amazing.

It's not about what you hear but about the damage it's doing.

Just because it doesn't bother you any more with specific lid doesn't mean you aren't suffering long term hearing damage.

MotoGP okes have ear plugs in for good reason...and they have the best helmets in the business. Same with F1 and any other motorsports.

You do realise that there are massively different levels of noise/sound during a motogp or f1 race where you have a dozen other bikes/formula 1 cars together on a enclosed track compared to driving on a national road which is generally in a open area right?
Not to mention the huge speed difference...
So saying you must wear earplugs whenever you get on your bike or you will damage your ears in the long run is just pure bullshit...

It's a pity that AGV aren't local as I was looking at the sport modular. Very fancy helmet. I suppose the Schuberth are an alternative but they get mixed reviews sometimes.

Sure let’s ignore science and the wealth of information out there around this topic.

Anything over 80km/h is damaging your hearing no matter what helmet you have.

I’ve got one of the quietest helmets out there right now (Shoei GT Air). On any given day if I forgot my ear plugs the short term difference to my 35km commute is clear as day in my ability to hear things.

But you do you buddy. I’ll rather be safe than sorry.

It’s not strictly about the wind noise only but the constant droning to your ears, vibration and pressure. A lot of the damage comes from things you don’t even hear.

Motorcyclists are at special risk for perminent hearing loss if they don't test and protect their hearing.

There is no significant difference in wind noise level as a function of speed, no matter what the helmet brand or model (all being full coverage).
bullet.gif
Neither the riding position nor the brand or style of motorcycle make significant difference in noise level.
bullet.gif
Padding inside the helmet, open or closed vents, or added weather stripping on the helmet to alter flow patterns, does not significantly alter the noise level in a helmet.
bullet.gif
Stopped at a stop light at a busy intersection with your helmet visor closed produces a sound level of 80-90dB SPL. (Lawn mower, loud restaurant levels)

Hearing Loss from Motorcycles: Engine vs. Helmet Wind — Scary Symptoms

But most importantly...

Riders risk ‘permanent hearing damage after just 15 minutes at 62mph

But sure...just buy a more expensive helmet that will solve everything. (Actually more expensive ones often make more noise for being lighter and thinner etc).

Companies like Sena are just making noise cancelling helmets for shits and giggles.

You are an absolute fool if you just ignore the above and think a helmet in and of itself will do the job. Unless you are literally commuting at residential speeds and very short trips you are damaging your ears.

Be glad, the Quality of the extras and components are shit. I would rather spend my R3.5k from my K3SV elsewhere if i known the helmet was this bad quality.

Shark spartan and Shark Skwal are better, HJC aswell.

32 years old going on 13 and asking for permission. It's not about age. It's about respect. If I die riding a bike, my GF will be broken.

We do not ride to add days to our lives, we ride to add life to our days. Having said that, if she loves you she will let you get one, if you love her, you will not do it. This is going to be discussed further. Ask here to ride with you so that she can trust you. Try and involve her with your decision.

Well fucking said sir!

I am talking to her and telling her that I will get a bike, eventually. She recognizes that I really want one and will get one.

Right now, I’m paying off my home.

My now wife and then girlfriend had this discussion when we initially started dating. At that point it was strongly opposed as she had a family friend who is wheelchair bound due to a motorcycle accident. Lots of talking and getting her to understand my love for motorcycles have eventually led to her being the one convincing me to rather keep or buy another motorcycle when I was looking at moving to a car before our little girl was born. I've have since bought a car for the first time in years, but there is still a motorcycle parked in the garage, and there will always be one (in some shape or form).

Also, big ups on wanting to settle that home loan, same focus here right now.

I'm getting crapped on from the GF for taking my surfboard to Bali because she doesn't want to ride her own moped. It's just fear and she'll be fine but it's irritating as fuck. It's fucking Bali, of course I'm going to take my surfboards.

So far, my home loan is going well but my car is getting on in age and at some point I'll need to get a new ride. At that point, I'll get a bike. I can't afford a new car and to pay off my home loan with renovations.

Extend my bond, use some to pay off the bike and use the rest to redo the bathroom and kitchen. I'll get a second hand 300cc Kawasaki.

Throwing my 2c into the arena for support of Shark. Landed head first onto a concrete sidewalk after being flung off my bike. Although I lost a chunk of short term memory, my head did not burst open like a melon and I was fine (relatively). The Shark S900 held up beautifully and did what it was supposed to.

Well to be honest I would expect that from any helmet and not any particular brand.

Where brands and models come in is the day to day of NOT CRASHING and that's where Shark failed me miserably.

I'm using two sharks. What do you find wrong with them and what are you using?

I liked my Shark RSI fusion, was the best helmet I have had before the Shoei NXR (RF-1200)

Would not hesitate to get a another one.

AGV on the otherhand disappointed me and it even happens to the top of the range models like the AGV Corsa and AX-8.

Leaking (in winter) and terrible wind noise on a Shark Speed R and on a most daily use feature the manner in which their visor clips in is terrible and heavy handed.

But more so their local support was just shocking after my complaints and eventually get it refunded and went back to Shoei.

Couldn't be happier with my GT-Air or the three other Shoei's before it.

Maybe if Shark is all you know it's just fine...but against Shoei it's not even in the same ballpark.

That kind of confirms my statement.

In isolation you would think Shark is fine and acceptable. But when you've had better (for the same or very similar money) then it's not quite there.

I know the Shark Speed R is a race Helmet or suppose to be racy helmet and is very loud, my best friend had a speed R and also purchased a GT-Air to replace it, his brother had the 900C and said it was a lot more quiet.
I had my Shark for 5 years and its wind noise was still less than the all the others when new, and it was used daily, visor mechanism was also solid after 5 years.

My Shark RSI Fusion is very very close to the NXR, The Shark was Half the price though.
Have had Cheap helmets(like VR-1 and MT stuff, that was utter crap), Airoh, AGV, Bell, LS2 in the past as well.

Actually the Speed R was specifically designed for Naked bikes and not a race helmet at all (those don’t have sun visors) and one of it’s marketing blurbs was reducing wind noise and buffeting.

That turned out to be woefully untrue.

I didn’t mean to knock it on visor mechanism as that’s a minor thing and not say to day just worthy of a mention. What did piss me off day to day was the way the Speed R specifically latched into lock. Visor has no lip and you need to get your finger in under it. Sometimes needing two hands to close it even after adjusting the base plates.

And you need to adjust he base plates ALL the damn time.

I’ve tested the S900 and I think the S500 (much lower spec) and were also sub par. Also the Evo which for what it was is okay I guess but not something I would buy.

But no surprise really, it’s French after all.

I’m sorry but if I’m wearing full sponge ear plugs and not even the less blocking filtered ones and get home with a headache and ringing ears then the helmet is kak.

Bell I’ve always been amazed by for their finish and low price and virtually no noise. However because they are all safety and no compromise they don’t offer helmets (or didn’t) with sun visors built in.

Interesting, I have a Skwal and a Speed R xD

The skwal I'll have to agree, it's a tad noisy but the Speed R is not bad in my opinion.
I've had loads of helmets, Bell, Shoei, Arai, Airoh and quite a few of those Marushin/vega and those crappy brands which I'll never buy again in my life.
My mother swears by shoei as well.
I've had bad experiences with all of them, even shark. Bad wind noise, broken visor mechanisms etc etc
So far the best helmet I've had in terms of build quality and noise was a Shark S500 esprit in matt blue. Second to that was a Bell and then my current shark Speed R third. Shoei and Arai were terrible,One Arai and two shoei, they had irritating whistling noises and the Airoh was actually quite flawless, just didn't really bother getting another one.

Maybe you get bad helmets in the same model range? I dunno. Just my experience.
Each to their own.

Yeah there is a chance it was a major dud, or more likely that I’m just more particular and sensitive to these things than most.

After all other people in this thread claimed you don’t need ear plugs at all and the helmet should make all the magic happen...

Shark eventually wanted to send it back to France to X-Ray and test it further and I just said sorry but I’m not going without a helmet for X amount of time.

I’d love to try Icon one day.

And BMW and the new Sena range once they have the noise cancelling ones.

But I fear without a dealership open to letting me test drive a lid or one having a great returns policy I’ll not take the chance again to have another incident gambling away from Shoei.
