I held an iPhone 6S for him for about two weeks, was trying to make the delivery as efficient as possible.
I happened to be driving to Durban and so I said I would deliver it directly to him. He was happy with this.
Everything was arranged for a delivery on Friday, allocated time in my day to do that, and then he said due to work he couldn’t make it and I should deliver to him on Saturday. I was busy on Saturday and so we then agreed for Sunday morning.
I messaged him early on Sunday, practically on the way to his house, and he tells me, that the deal is off because he decided to browse Gumtree and found a much cheaper deal all of a sudden and went and bought that phone, and now our deal is cancelled.
Now this review is to teach people about the principal of commitment. I held the phone for two weeks for him gladly. I had plenty of other offers in that period for even more money than we agreed on, but rejected the offers and said the phone was sold to uphold my promise on the sale.
And now he ditches me last minute, doesn’t think for a second how far out of my way I’ve gone for him, coming all the way from Pretoria to personally deliver an iPhone to him, and holding it for two weeks in the process. That’s inconsiderate if you ask me. And then he went on to block me on WhatsApp shortly after. I have all of the messages to prove this by the way.
Imagine if I had something for sale. Let’s say it was R1200. Now I get a call from person A and we agree on R1000 as a done deal. My responsibility to keep my honour and promise is to go for that deal since I’ve given my word to the buyer. Even if moments later I get a call for an offer of R1500, I have to reject it - or at the very least notify well in advance to person A that I got a much better offer on the table.
In closing, I would suggest if you are selling something to him, ask for a deposit before committing to hold it for him. He could just end up wasting your time with no notification and a meagre apology.
