I hate it. I can't play any turn-based type of game, especially strategy games. It's a waste of time.

Play. Pause. Your turn, a few animations, my turn, repeat. It's awful.

Is this an American thing? I don't think I've really seen South African gamers freak out because of the latest turn-based title being released.

Chess, that I can do. Worms, yes, makes sense. The rest is just pure nonsense.

Edit: I started ranting after seeing Marvel Midnight Suns.

Have you tried sid meier's civilization?
I won't. I just can't stomach it. I have bought a few strategy games by mistake that turned out to be Turn-based, which was a waste of time and a waste of my money. I've watched CIV gameplay and I own it on Steam, but I won't play it.

I always liked the Heroes of Might and Magic games (especially nr 5)
There must be a market for it, since there are a lot of these games released. My issue where it's getting personal is that these games are marketed as Strategy or RTS games. You literally have to search whether a game is Turn-based or not. It's not cool. Especially if you spend money without checking, as I have.

Edit: Many RPGs are also Turn-based. Makes it even more difficult to discern without thoroughly searching.

Oh man, you must REALLY hate chess.
I don't however. Mentioned it in the OP. Chess is perfectly acceptable. Calling a game a Strategy, RTS or RPG game should just be that. If it is Turn-based only, mention it clearly. Even for Marvel Midnight Suns, I had to specifically search whether it's Turn-based or not.

I saw what you said, but I don't believe you :p

Divinity: Original Sin 2 was my first introduction to turn-based RPG. Can highly recommend.
Is it turn-based though? I have played it, ages ago, I can't recall. Doesn't it have a Commandos or Desperados gameplay?

Kinda free-roam until you're spotted by enemies and then the combat is turn-based
Yeah, that's what I hate. I don't mind having to take turns between my own units or characters in normal gameplay, but to sit and plot a battle for 20 minutes between players or AI sucks. This is my own opinion though. My own rant. It completely puts me off playing a game.

Busy with Divinity Original Sin 2. Playing with a friend, we enjoyed the first one because it isnt your typical RPG.

I wouldn't play it on my own, not my cup of tea, but with friends it can be fun.

Strategy, RTS

They won't call a turn-based game an RTS, since the RT stands for "real-time," and therefore not turn-based.

They do normally mention it - on Steam, look at the tags. There are some other clues, e.g. if a strategy game is tagged "4X" that usually implies turn-based, even though none of the X's refer to it.

I used to think I'd hate turn-based games, for the same reasons you list. I even tried KOTOR back in the day and couldn't get into it. But I was once at a friend's house and he showed me Civ V and let me play a bit. And since then I've put hundreds of hours into Civ V and VI, and also XCOM.

The benefit of turn-based 4X games over RTS is that you can make a much deeper game with many, many more systems to manage. It's very satisfying to see your empire grow. You basically gloss over what the AI is doing on a turn-to-turn basis, you kinda just care about your own empire (unless you're actively engaged in combat or checking the opponent's progress towards something you covet). You develop little plans and goals, and it's a great feeling when something you've been working towards comes together nicely, whether putting a city somewhere really cool or maxing out a specific bonus or building a wonder with great synergy with your targets. Clicking "next turn" becomes almost addictive - there's a reason the main meme of such games is "just one more turn." None of this would be possible if you didn't have as much time as you needed per turn, but that doesn't mean each turn takes half an hour, for large stretches where things are running smoothly you will get through your turns much more quickly. Combat, I will say, is not more satisfying than in RTS, but combat is a much smaller part of the whole experience than in an RTS, and you can win in other ways that can be just as satisfying as wiping all the AI off the map.

I mean, that is exactly what turn based games are ' Strategy, RTS '

Well the RT part of that implies stepping away from rasterized graphics turn-based gameplay. It's either real-time, or it's turn-based. You can't have a turn-based real-time strategy game. Although "strategy" is a blanket term for both, TBS and RTS are mutually exclusive.

As a person who is visually impaired, I love turn based games or story driven games for example the Telltale series of games , Detroid becomes Human etc. I do play the occasional FPS games but if I do it is usually solo on the lowest difficulty cause I cant see shit lol.

I like the implementation in Total War games. Turn based strategic campaign map, but battles are full real-time tactical and fast paced gameplay.

Turn based games aren't for everyone, but I find them really satisfying. Something about plotting a move over multiple turns and then pulling it off is just cathartic.

They're not everyone's cup of tea. Personally, I used to be on the same boat. I couldn't get into the whole play-pause-play cycle—it felt like a drag. But then, I stumbled upon spider solitaire online, and it totally changed the game for me.
See, I've always been more into quick-paced action, so turn-based stuff wasn't really my scene. But with spider solitaire, it's like I found the perfect balance. It's chill enough to help me unwind after a long day, but still keeps my brain engaged. Plus, there's no waiting around for animations or other players' turns—it's just me and the cards.
