Interesting article on the 1080\1080ti and which cards you should consider as upgrades. The 1080ti remains the GOAT. Sorry I didn't buy it at the time but my budget didn't go that far, so I rock a 1080 even upto now. Only now upgrading to a 4080 super.

I had the 1080 and it was a great gpu. used it for something like 4 years. Even finished cyberpunk on it back when that game was full of performance issues.

Funny enough I only upgraded to a 3080 about 1.5yrs ago because I bought a water cooler for my cpu, then my cpu gave issues and that triggered me to upgrade my whole rig. Even changed the case.

I've had a merry mix-up of graphics cards over the years, but I generally have had much more success/reliability with AMD cards.
  • Voodoo 2
  • GT8800 (failed within 6 months - new)
  • GTS450 (temporary card until I got another 8800)
  • GT8800 (failed within a year - used)
  • GTX 660 (fans failed within a year - new)
  • R9390 (Corsair PSU (brand new) wrecked PC)
  • R9390X (the first item I can recall selling on Carbonite)—I sold it because I decided to further my studies and not get distracted.
  • RX 580 (sold on Carbonite) - Temporary card from a family member.
  • GTX 1060 6GB (dead on arrival - new)
  • GTX 1080Ti (Sold to a friend) - The only Nvidia card I've owned that lasted more than a year.
  • RX 6800XT (current graphics card)

Definitely the GOAT especially with 11Gb VRAM. 1080Ti was king because it destroyed the last gens Ti card which is something yet to be seen again.

Some cards based on the big die (usually ending in 02) every 2nd generation seem to age the best and offer big performance uplifts.

2 gens after the 1080Ti the RTX3080 was good with a 85% performance uplift versus the 1080Ti at 4K (Techpowerup review numbers) but it didn't smash the 2080Ti and was let down by less VRAM.

Then a gen later the RTX4090 with a great 90% uplift at 4K versus the 3080. Also a monstrous 24Gb VRAM but a monstrous price for something that didn't smash the 3090Ti as it was only 50% faster.

Seems to trend good gen, bad gen, good gen, bad gen but still never reaches the great achievements of the 1080Ti

Would really be nice if we got back to the old days of better price/performance with massive uplifts but with the GPUs getting more complicated, NVIDIA reserving the 02 die for their top models (4080 got 103 this gen) and the costs of new tech like GDDR7, it seems like we may have to wait a while.

many great cards over the years that really blew everything that came before out the water

for me, in chronological order (and showing my age here)

Voodoo2
Geforce 256 SDR/DDR
8800GTX
1080ti

Would like to know who the vendors of these cards are if you can remember. I'm guessing Gigabyte?
