Morning everyone. So i'm looking for a little laymens advice on setting up our existing PABX system to work with VOIP calls on fibre. I've been burnt by these PABX system providers more than once, and if its possible, would like to avoid having to finance expensive equipment all over again.

We currently have a Yeastar / Yealink PABX switchboard system, which uses premi-cell for outbound calls (This contract is up, so I need to move into the future with VOIP) We also have a Telkom fibre router into the office with 150m line. All I want to know is, what kind of specialized equipment / software does one need to set up a system like this to use with VOIP? Sorry if this is quite a broad question, I'm just trying to assess what the requirements are to set up a voip system, and whether we meet these requirements without having to fork out thousands of rands a month to an external provider.

Thanks in advance

Depends on your Yealink equipment but it should work with offerings from Vox.

I was impressed by their Verto Supreme stuff, not so much 3CX.

Vox have quoted me on getting setup, so yes, it should work with our system.

I would suggest if possible to go the Cloud PBX route. There are many providers in S.A. to choose from, so don't accept the first Quote either.

You can use your existing phones, if they are VOIP capable and your line speed is more than sufficient.

Look at Switchtel, domains.co.za and do a search for Hosted PBX.

The time and money you will spend on support, or rather lack of it, hardware and other issues is not worth it. I speak from experience.

Perfect, thank you, will go have a look

As this is for a business, don't take the cheapest option & do look at support.... Vox is great with their support. I use their FTTB for most of my business clients. I also have used their Vobi offering for years, with great success.

It was a life saver when I was in the UK for 6 months as I had to call back and forth to SA.

I have a client who chose domains.co.za for their website and emails - they are cheap which is cool and all but if I recall, their support is all via email.... Vox have 24/7/365 phone support.

Another business client is with Voys who have been good for a number of years. My only gripe was when they changed their SIP port and didnt push that change to the phones + they couldn't resolve the issue... This lead the client to contact me and I did Voy's job for them... Thats not even level 1 VoIP support stuff... Like come on guys... I'd expect that from Telkom...

Since you already have the fibre, I say go with the hosted pbx service from www.switchtel.co.za

Excellent service.
Fully automated portal where you can change settings etc, welcome messages, routing of calls, etc

Setting up your existing PABX system for VOIP calls on fiber can be tricky, but it's doable. You might need a SIP trunking service to connect your PABX to the internet for VOIP calls. Also, considering your Yeastar/Yealink setup, have you explored call transfer features in cloud-based call center solutions? They can streamline communication and might fit your needs without hefty equipment investments.
