Given that Gmail is forcing 2FA on me soon I am looking at migrating.... Options people please.

Main contenders ATM is GMX for free and Proton for paid.

Proton is great, I've also been using Zoho mail for years now without a single issue.

Proton FTW - Love it. I have paid sub with them. I combined it with SimpleLogin and and a couple of personal domains. It takes care of ALL my email needs and I if needed, I can send of mails that are virtually untraceable back to me... which is cool (for those days that I want to go full keyboard warrior but am too shit scared of possibly being tracked down and getting hurt).

2FA is not a bad habit to get into... just saying. Scared the crap out of my colleagues when I showed them how easy I can log into their personal accounts from their work stations (granted they were daft and never cleared their browsers and browser passwords), but 2FA would have stopped me...

I can see the arguments for it but on one hand it's too much of a nudge to big brother type things for me and for another..... what if something happens and your phone does not work or gets stolen or something?

No it's much better for me to have my email accounts independent and isolated from not only a weakest link physical device but each other.

I know Murphy WAY to well to not have ample redundancy in place for his appearance.

More likely you will simply be depersoned from a platform that has captured a segment and almost become a utility..... like myBB.

Funny enough..... I still have no real idea why they banned me because they once again even banned me from PM's so I cannot read what once again probably is a terribly stupid excuse for arbitrarily silencing me.

Keepass and Authy have rendundancy built in (and Big Brother does not type anything for you - as a matter of fact they are offline), sure it requires a bit of due diligence on the users part. The possible horrors that can be inflicted when any of your accounts get compromised should scare you way more than anything else... especially email - it's a goldmine for the nasty people out there...

Yubikeys are my next step - but I need 2 or 3 for redundancy. If you only have 1 and you lose it you are pretty much locked out.

I hear you, not my place to preach, it just makes me personally sleep a little better at night...

Just get a domain and pay for your subscription at any reputable hosting company...you get what you pay for..pay peanuts you get monkeys.

host 4 frica provide pop3/iMAP support on all their hosting packages . plus at entry level you get 10 configurable email addresses or aliases ...... cheap easy
