Hi all,

First post here - happy to have found Carbonite. Don't be too savage in the replies! :p
Just wanted to relay some thoughts on my GTX 1080 experience - sourcing, buying and using it... :)

I recently sold my GTX 970 G1 Gaming from Gigabyte and my Samsung UHD 4K Monitor to "upgrade". 4K just wasn't for me. Gaming was difficult because most games had to downscale to 1440p to achieve decent framerates. I sold the 4K Monitor for R7000, and my GPU for R4000. I had a ton of savings burning a hole in my pocket so I decided to upgrade my gaming PC, as I have a ton of games on Steam and just never played them, so I figured now would be the best time to.

Obviously I went looking for a GTX 1080 card. I tried everywhere - calling local suppliers, all online stores... i.e. Wootware, RebelTech, etc. but no-one had stock. It's literally a matter it coming in and going out right away. Eventually after 6 days of calling every known place to man and even looking on Amazon and Ebay, I contacted PC International that said they had stock. Bloody hell! I paid for it right away on Monday and it arrived yesterday. The monitor was another story. The ASUS and ACER options were tempting, but I couldn't justify ~R20,000 for a monitor, so I settled with the Dell S2716DG (144hz, 1440p, Gsync, TN Panel) monitor through Takealot. Unfortunately the monitor did have a 4 business day shipping period but luckily I got it yesterday too. I really wanted to go IPS but there was horror stories online about the QC at ACER and ASUS being really shoddy, and anyway, my 4K monitor was TN, so I went with it. The quality of this monitor is amazing once you set the gamma and RGB to what works for you. Also, this is my first Gsync experience and it's glorious, I can't go back!

Right now I've overclocked the GTX 1080 to 2038Mhz on the clock (+110 OC) and 5400Mhz on the memory clock (+400 OC). The card doesn't get higher than 62 degrees, its so good! I'm not a techie at all and for the life of me can't figure out how SLI works or what I'll need to do it, so having one GPU is within my maximum understanding of these things - which the 1080 handles well! The card is massive, like MASSIVE, but luckily the case I have (Antec 902) can just about fit it snuggly.

Overall I'm pretty happy with everything - I'm getting a solid 144FPS in Rocket League, FIFA 16 and F1 2015 at 1440p, 90-92 FPS in GTAV on max settings in 1440p, and around 100-110FPS in Project Cars, Assetto Corsa and American Truck Simulator. Its all buttery smooth, and I'm totally sold on this manufactor syncing thing - be it with Freesync and Gsync - I'm pretty sure Freesync is just as good. Movies are awful to watch on the monitor though, but I guess I need to limit it to 60Hz when I play a video. I won't look back from leaving the 4K world to downgrading, however.

So that's how it all happened. Was super stressful sourcing the parts, for decent prices, and finding buyers for my old hardware - but it all worked out in the end. PC International was friendly and professional throughout the experience with the GPU and the only real "issue" I had was that I asked for it to be sent with same day or next day express, regardless of the cost, but they sent it via road freight. That's just my impatience making it an issue I guess, it really shouldn't be an issue :).

Thanks for reading and hope that if you're on the fence of going SLI with two 980's, or getting a 1080, your mind is a bit more made up :). (Don't get me wrong, I heard 2 980's still blow the 1080 away, albeit at possibly higher temperatures and more power consumed :)).

Also - off topic, but if you're wondering about my username....
Me and my friends finally decided to make our own podcast. The 4 hosts are one guy from the UK, one girl from Italy, and one girl from Serbia. And me - I'm from Cape Town, South Africa. We're 30 episodes in and are having a great time recording it - it's all uncensored comedy with some great games and chats.
We have around 11,000 weekly listeners and hoping to build on that. If you're using iTunes or have an iOS device, you'll see us as third on the New and Noteworthy section, and we've been up to number 4 in overall comedy.

I'd be super stoked if you guys could listen so please head on over and have a listen or subscribe to 'A Knight With Us Podcast':
We're on iTunes, Stitcher, YouTube and SoundCloud - and all other Android Podcast apps :).
Any and all feedback is appreciated, whether here, private message, or via web/email.
Glowing iTunes and Stitcher reviews are especially beloved :)

Cheers Carbonites! I've also done a small donation to increase that blue bar as I feel the forums here are awesome and deserve to stay online!

Hey you should use the template

Dafuq? What template?

OP why are movies so bad on this monitor?

I don't think movies at 24fps play nicely at 144fps :). I tested at 60fps and movies look fine!

It really is a great monitor, you won't regret your decision for a second. If you can look past the TN hardware - you're fine! As I wrote in the post, with a little tuning, it's as close as makes no difference to an IPS monitor...

Thanks for (futurely) checking out the podcast - it really is much appreciated :).

I've been eyeballing that Dell monitor for a while now so it's good to hear positive feedback about it.
If I get some money back from uncle SARS I might make the jump.

Another big factor when considering the Dell monitor is the 3 year on site warranty, and Dell support is quite quick to resolve any issues that you report
