A fire which caused massive damage at the SK Hynix’s Wuxi DRAM factory in China a few weeks ago, combined with the weak Rand and a new tax, are pushing memory prices much higher in South Africa.

In other words, consumer's can prepare their anooses for the pricing to come. You are looking at nearly double the current pricing, so if you want some RAM, grab some 2nd hand stuff off Carbonite NOW.

/OT: Lekker render that!

One has to wonder if they intentionally stage these disasters to control the market, or hijack it. Obviously I'm not referring to floods.

I dont know if it is just where I work, but our 4gb DDR3 1333 has already gone up to R480. and 8gb modules are R900. retail btw.

Its rough

The fire has nothing to do with it, these price hikes were planned several months ago when I warned you guys about it. The Rand/Dollar also has little to do with it, as prices are crap worldwide. In fact, prices went through the roof in the USA about a month before our prices went up.

International prices shot up before the fire.

Me thinks that this is an excuse to push the price up regardless of the timing. Sure the fire did some damage but I remember your post about the low price of RAM being unfeasible for the manufacturers to make a profit.

Exactly what 0j0 said.

Also That fire did not in any way harm there production line.

Yet again Really Sad to see RAM prices take another hike :(

Would be interesting to see a graph of RAM price per megabyte since say 1980.

To make comparison realistic, maybe in equivalent McDonald's burgers per megabyte?
