Hey everyone, I am about to start my first remote contract position as a web developer and would like to replace my desktop machine with a laptop. Thanks to load-shedding being unpredictable at times a portable machine would come in very handy.

Do you have any good recommendations in terms of spec? Mac or Windows?

Thanks for the help!

Get a MacBook Pro (M1) if you can afford it or if not, even the Air (M1) should suffice

Battery life is insane on these (15 hours +- real world usage)

With the M2 launching here soon, you should be able to find the M1 at a good price

Make sure you get a laptop that works with a laptop power bank. ie. common charging volts eg 19-20v or 12v(unlikely).

It depends on your budget. But I wouldn't go Mac. I am currently working on my company's one (iOS development). A windows machine with WSL2 works great for web development.

Bought myself the wootbook. Great battery life and can't beat the performance for the price. I was in the market to sell mine ( verdict is still out there if you might be interested). I am currently not really using it and is about 2 months old with all the best specs.

But won't buy myself a Mac for the price. You can get more ram storage for half the price. And even have a 3070.

Why Wootbook:
- Ryzen 5 9500HX 8 Cores, 16 Threads
3.30GHz (20MB Cache) Up to 4.60GHz Boost Clock
- 3070 8GB GPU,
- 64 GB RAM,
- 2TB SSD,
- 1440P 165Hz screen
- 3 Year warranty

That for half the price of a Macbook

And battery life is like 1/4 of the Macbooks.
@Hoffles So the question should be what do you use it for and how do you use it.
My requirement are as follows (I am an engineer, but my laptop work is mainly email, documentation. I use a desktop for any simulations, etc.)

1. Battery life: Do you do dev at coffee shops and carry the laptop around, or sit at a desk 95% of the time?
2. Keyboard: How does the keyboard feel for you? I type a lot and a good keyboard feel is high on the list.
3. Screen: I still rock a 17" Macbook Pro. The large full HD screen is great.
4. System requirements: For web dev, CPU/GPU doesn't really help that much. You want RAM. (My assumptions, your mileage may vary.)
5. SSD space: Such a low requirement for me. I use the cloud for everything.
