Hi there !

I'm looking for a second hand car around 150-200K with some preferencial brands, i found the Audi Q3 to my liking, i was wondering how it performs off road, maybe safari, and also how is the servicing / spare parts on this car ?
Thank you ! Audi Q3 2.0TDI Quattro Auto for sale in Kempton Park - ID: 27339956

Ps: I like aesthetics, its a priority for me.

Soft offroad/dirt road it will be fine!

Beware of those guys on autotrader they buy accident damaged cars and sell them dirt cheap! Please buy from a reputable dealership your going to hit your head badly!

On the car itself, i have owned various Volkswagen Audi products and know of a fair few people that own them. I have vowed to never buy one again! In our office of 8 people 3 have had bad experiences 2 of their cars are currently broken and require upwards of R60 000 in repairs, one car on 150 000km another on 115 000km. I had to replace my complete engine on 63 000km and replace gearbox on 118 000 cost me around R100 000 in repairs in about 3 years (conveniently problems started straight after warranty expired) fixed the car, sold it at a hectic loss bought a much cheaper car and much happier. Those gearboxes are a MESS!

*disclaimer this is just my opinion and from what has happened to me personally, your mileage and opinion might vary

Steer clear of second hand VAG cars - they're only good under warranty (somewhat).

With regards to off-road capability, the Q3 is definitely not it. I mean, you can drive a Kwid on a dirt road.

If you want a "cheap", capable off roader, your best bet would be a Jimny. But the next gen Jimny's price is a bit further north of the price of the Q3 you mentioned.

You're much safer going with an older Japanese brand if you're looking at getting something with slightly higher mileage.

+1, my Golf VII consumed a liter of oil (I shit you not) for every 600km before I sold it. Repairs were going to be in the region of R40 000 at the time. Car had 105 000km on the clock and never missed a service, fuck VW / Audi.

I'd suggest a 2nd gen 4x4 Renault Duster instead, bit fugly but the 1.5 diesel is a solid motor and the thing is generally reliable and cheap to repair.

P.S The new 2024 duster is a thing of beauty.

Bud there's only 9 on Autotrader in South Africa in that price range. 7 of the 9 are at somewhat legitimate dealers and range in mileage between 139 000km and 205 000km and are between 10-12 years old.

If you want to buy somebody else's problems, buy one of those.

Also, remember the old saying "Champagne tastes but beer money".
200K is like beer money in today's car market, don't go chasing Germans at 21y.o - chase a reliable car that is light on fuel and cheap to insure.

And listen to the other reasonable suggestions in this thread.

This right here is the truth.

A lot of people want German cars just to say they drive a German car. But a fool and his money are soon parted, I hope OP listens.

Also, whatever you choose to buy (if you are buying 2nd hand), please use a service like Car Inspect or Screan (not an ad) to go through the car and check everything out before you buy (as far as their mechanics can without disassembling things, of course).

I used the former when I bought my car and they were fantastic. Can't recommend these kinds of service providers highly enough, I've been burnt badly before on second hand cars (including one that was checked by Dekra but turned out to be a major lemon) and wish the service had been around at that stage.

Not life advice but I'd avoid Dekra. I don't trust them due to the aforementioned experience.

As for what to consider, I'd look at a Renault Duster as well - I cross shopped it before buying my current car and the only reason I didn't go for one, was because I couldn't really justify getting the 4x4 model because I just don't off-road my cars. I'd avoid the 1st gen as they are prone to rust.

Dekra are kak. I sold a bakkie and the buyer knew what issues the car had already but we needed to do the report. It came back with none of the issues picked up.

Iz true. Old vag needs more lube and breaks down often.
This is misinformation. As someone in the legal profession you should know the repercussions of spreading such blatant falsehoods.

Nothing wrong with sampling old vag and most don't need more lube and more than not, hardly ever break down mid journey.

Just stay away from old German cars. Embrace old vag.

Please don't set your expectations around that price.

On Auto Trader, if it is a dealership in Kempton Park or Johannesburg CBD, they sell the cars for dirt cheap because they are accident damaged or have been written off or some such thing, they are not dealerships you want to be dealing with.

For accurate pricing reference the brand's authorised used dealer (to get an idea for price) then filter with those figures rather. You don't want to be dealing with those crocodile shoe scummy dealerships

Once went to a CBD dealer to look at an older Figo. Both door locks were completely missing. Was told to "not worry about it."

Needless to say, I worried about it.

Yea I unfortunately also fell for it once, went to see a Fiesta and one thing I always check is the lines, you can always see if a panel has been reshaped from accident damage and those okes don't seem to have the budget to hire professionals. The lines will always be lumpy when the light catches it.
