Hi, hoping somebody can help. My daughter's XPS 13 just crashed and then stopped working. No LEDs on when plugged in, keyboard backlit lights up when you press power button... That's it...

Hey bud.

Are there any blinking lights on the power button/led?

Try a hard reset. Remove charger, remove any usbs. Remove battery if possible. Hold down power button for like 30 seconds. The put the battery back, plug in charger and try to power on. Notice if the fan is running or if you hear any beeps.

ChatGPT reccomdations:
If your Dell XPS 13 suddenly crashed and now shows no charging LED but the keyboard backlight flashes when pressing the power button, it usually points to a power delivery issue, motherboard protection state, or battery problem. Try these checks in order:

1. Perform a Hard Reset (very important)

Sometimes the power controller gets stuck.

  1. Unplug the charger.
  2. Hold the power button for 30–40 seconds.
  3. Release it.
  4. Plug the charger back in.
  5. Press power once.

This resets the embedded controller.

2. Check the Charger

XPS laptops are picky about USB-C power.

  • Try a different USB-C charger that supports 45W or 65W Power Delivery.
  • Try a different USB-C port on the laptop (many XPS models have 2–3).

3. Try Booting Without the Battery

If the battery failed, the laptop may refuse to start.

  1. Open the bottom cover.
  2. Disconnect the battery cable.
  3. Plug in the charger.
  4. Try powering on.

If it boots → battery likely dead.

4. Look for Diagnostic LED/Keyboard Codes

Some Dell laptops flash diagnostic patterns:

  • White/amber LED patterns
  • Keyboard backlight blinking patterns

Tell me:

  • Does the keyboard light once, blink repeatedly, or stay on?

5. Try the LCD Self-Test

Hold D + Power.

If the screen cycles colors → motherboard is alive and it's a display issue.

6. Possible Causes Based on Your Symptoms

Most likely causes:

LikelihoodIssue
HighEmbedded controller crash
HighBattery short / failure
MediumUSB-C power circuit failure
MediumMotherboard power rail issue
LowRAM or SSD issue

Good sign: The keyboard backlight reacting means the motherboard still detects the power button.

Bad sign: No LED when plugging charger may mean the charging circuit isn't negotiating power.

Also maybe try plugging it into an external monitor if you have one, maybe the screen is disconnected or broken?

I had an XPS 15 7590 which did the same, turned out the power delivery failed, don't know if this is a common issue on the XPS 13
