Worthwhile to upgrade or rather wait?

Hi guys

So i was wondering if it is worthwhile to upgrade at this point in time or would it be better to wait until later in the year for the latest CPU etc updates to be released? My current PC runs an i5 4690K originally with 16GB ram, but the one stick recently gave up the ghost do down to 8GB. All system components (excl GPU) was purchased in Jan2015.

I have considered jumping the chip up to a i7 4790K and getting some additional RAM again, but given the age of my system was thinking it may be simpler to upgrade as a whole. I generally prefer buying a system to keep for longer periods of time (5-7 years) so would be looking for components that are robust.

What would your thoughts be? Hold on for a while longer, or go for an upgrade, was thinking an i7 9700 or Ryzen7 3700x if upgrading.

Any and all advice, feedback, opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Have a nice day

If you can get a good price on a 3700x, now is a good time. As soon as new stock comes in after lockdown, expect a nice bump in prices...

i think its worth the upgrade if you planning on buying 2nd hand... if you are planning on buying brand new hardware i would wait

I'm running a similar setup:

i7 4790 (Non-K)
GTX 1080
16GB 1866Mhz

To be honest at 1080p I don't struggle with most new titles at ultra. The only game giving me grief is PUBG but that's due to optimization of the game itself. If I ever want to upgrade to 4K gaming I'll upgrade to the latest gen Ryzen etc.

Hi Guys, thank you very much for the input received, appreciate it.

I will keep an eye out for any good prices. Any recommendations for a good motherboard? Which would be a good series to consider, b450, x470, or x570 at this point?

Hi there man .

I am going to say what a friend told me once , you will always have a this question of when can I upgrade should I buy a new pc now ? my view is just do it , things will always get more expensive things will always get better and do it now.

I upgraded from a 3570non k i5 to my current setup and I am loving it , and also I noticed a 9700K motherboard combo from evetech is the same I paid for my 9900k last year.

besides if you love gaming and its your hobby why not , and you have the money to spend on it , do it :)

Hope it helps man cheers !

P.s go for the 9th gen or Ryzen dont go for a 4th gen chip seriously or even a lekker 8700K with a good OC can play with the best of the 9th gen chips.

100% disagree - Wait for the new stock. This is a very unique year. Intel has competition which means prices will have to come down or performance up. General rule I have is to never buy in the same year as a console release either.

Notwithstanding, I'd say wait for the Ryzen 4000. You will kick yourself come September if the 4000 performance can be had for the 3000 price. If not the case, you buy the 3000 series cheaper than currently. Same goes for Intel and the 9700k.

Nvidia also is sitting on 2 year old tech in which RTX was a flop.

Also wouldn't try and call the market just yet - companies will be sitting on old stock and consumers will have the power. There will be a boom immediately after lockdowns are eased, but overall the economy will shrink so they will try their best for you to buy this old stock.

If this was normal year, I would say go for it but there just too many circumtances point in the favour of the consumer currently.

EDIT - Alternative view: Unless stock runs out locally and the rand never recovers... Then you will definitely pay inflated prices so now might be the perfect time

Very complicated becasuse:
1. Dollar rate is very high, new prices will therefore be high.
2. Business for the small retailers that are closed during lockdown will be cash-strapped, so will be desperate for a sale, maybe bargains will be available.
3. Sadly, some people will be in over their heads in terms of rentals and installments with work/pay complications and will be desperate for money. There will be lots to sell, and less buyers with extra cash.

My hunch, if you want to buy new, do it now, if you willing to go for something used, wait a bit, at least a week or 2 after lockdown is lifted to get a feel of the used market

Sadly prices have already gone up. One cpu i was keen on 1 week before lock down was R2k and now irs R2699.

See Intel's release - told you to wait...

Fair and true, but i wonder when the new chips would be available locally given Covid.
I don't know how available they are going to be even in the USA or UK.

The price is also going to be mental because of low supply and high demand. I don't think the high price for the extra 2 cores is going to be worth it but there's so much speculation that you really can't be sure.

The best computer in the world is the one that works for you within your budget, not the latest model that's super L33T and a monster gaming machine.

Yeah but you be would stupid buying gen 9 intel with HT disabled when you know 10th gen will have it enabled.

R24K for a board seems a bit excessive. One understands the rand is worthless against almost every currency around, but still. $749 for the MSI board can't be 24K. The other boards are more in line with the US price and exchange rate. At this sort of pricing, the Aorus Extreme waterforce would be R42K. :/ (MSI Godlike is $749 vs $1,300 for AE)

For this generation, I'd not buy a board over R9K in a personal capacity. That would be the absolute max, as this platform will literally last 10 months at best, with Rocket-Lake out in 7/8 months, along with Z590 (full PCIe 4.0 x8 SB as well etc.)
If you're not running lots of LED strips, fans and some serious OC, most of the boards offer things you may struggle to find use for. Not saying they shouldn't be there, as options are always good. However, most of us end up using less than 50% of the boards capabilities. 24K board to run 2x8GB mem @ 3200 is wasteful. 4x16GB @ 4400 though, hmm, that's a thing ;)
