So I need help, Windows xp (any sp) will it work on todays modern builds? I need to get a quote on a new PC for my work but it doesn't need to be anything fancy, but needs to be new, has to support windows xp as the software required for a furnace only supports Windows XP.

Another question will I still be able to get a fresh Window xp to load onto the hard drive?

shouldn't have a problem and you can just buy a new key from one of the resellers here

Depends on the modern build your are talking about though

I think windows XP is limited to 2x core CPU's if im not mistaken.

ALso Windows xp 32bit has a max of 4GB ram, so make sure you isntall 64bit

So you suggest going with a celeron? Which will be fine, 64 but to support Atleast 8gb of ram, and mobo will be as cheap as possible.

Why not run the XP install in a VMware environment and connect the virtual machine to the hardware via a direct connection?
That sounds smart, but I have no clue what that means [emoji23]

So virtual machines are essentially a piece of software that allows you to run an installation of most operating systems in a closed environment.

Once installed, you can hard connect hardware to the VM that allows direct access to the hardware as though the virtualised OS had a plugged in USB, PCI, PCI-e device.

I have a VMware for ParrotOS and can connect my USB WiFi dongle that gives the OS full use of the WiFi functions, including packet injection.

I’m sure you could trick the software into running in a virtual machine.

Virtual machines are also very useful because you can move the install to a new machine if the host fails.

Let me quickly also ask what are we looking at to rewrite a program to make it Windows 10 compatible? If this WMware doesn't work?

Depends on the language and how much the dev will charge per hour to fix it.

If it’s Ruby, that’s a rare programming skill but Java, C#, Etc are fairly easy to modify.

You might be able to update the code to the new syntax and rework it but it’ll take a while.

You’d probably be looking at the same price as creating a new, very basic app, which was R350 000 the last time I checked with a media creation company.

Somehow, I don’t think your app is new-school though.

I know its not the best to recommend it but , I have seen a few companies that need for the Old serial cards , or some software that runs there one component and it only works on xp.

I would say load a warm version on it , and just keep it isolated in the network , cause malware and virus would go ape on that OS.

Maybe try the software in XP mode on a Windows 7 test PC to see if it works

Nah, i used to have a Q9400 on XP, 4 cores works.

It boils down to three things normally, does the motherboard support IDE mode for the SATA controller, does it support Legacy BIOS mode and does it have USB2.0 ports.

Windows XP does not have an AHCI driver
Windows XP does not support UEFI
Windows XP does not support USB3.0

Even Windows 7 is becoming harder and harder to get working these days because of the last two reasons mentioned, but it includes an AHCI driver at least

I was driving today and had a thought - could Linux be your solution?

The application, WINE, is designed to natively run applications in Linux (it’s not an emulator, it’s name even says so - it’s an acronym for Wine Is Not An Emulator) and has a lot of games that will work with it so performance shouldn’t be a problem.

The problem is compatibility but sometimes, running it as a generic XP application could work.

Basically, fire up Ubuntu, install WINE and then try install your XP only application.

Yes, I know, I’m just saying that if the performance is good enough to allow a Linux machine to run an intense programme, like a game, natively, it might just work for your application and allow expansion cards and adapters to connect to the application with very little trouble shooting.

I have a desktop that I refurbished that will work for you. (not sure how important is the "new" aspect)
and I can load XP on for you (with SP 3, Drivers and all)

Give me a shout and we can arrange something.

Sale thread:

MoBo site shows drivers for XP, and windows 7. Currently loaded Windows 10 and it works fine

Getting a system that can run XP is not a problem, problem is that it needs to be a new system as older systems tend to break after a while due to the extensive use, I have a vault filled with Core 2 duo PCs.

What have you tried so far? I presume you’ve created a VMware machine?

Let us know how it goes - I’d be interested to know.

I used to be heavily into server configs and so on. I left the IT industry a while ago tho.

Do not run XP unless the PC NEVER touches your network or the internet.

Rather run Virtualbox with XP.

Let me just clear it up, I don't need advice on weather or not I have to run XP or not, also don't wanna buy any hardware.

Because it seems some replays starve from what I asked.

Thanks to those that helped out will try all the methods that came up and see if I can get something to work.
