Good day,

Seeking some help with regards to reformatting an old Dell Laptop that I'd like to give away to a student.

So the laptop came installed with Windows 7 home basic (license key is located underneath the laptop). I tried downloading a Windows 7 home basic ISO from Microsoft but they no longer offer support for Windows 7. I had to download Windows 7 home basic from some dodgy website. Anyways, managed to get it installed but the problem I have now is that when entering the license key, it doesn't accept it and gives me an error.

Decided to do my own research and it seems that I have to install an OEM version of Windows which is called Windows 7 home basic OA MEA. This usually comes on a CD when you purchase the laptop which I don't have anymore.

Does anyone know a workaround or know where I can download a Windows 7 home basic OA MEA ISO? I'm really clueless and don't have much knowledge on this but I want to get the laptop sorted for the student to start using this.

Would seriously appreciate any assistance.

TIA

Is Windows 10 not an option (for better longevity)?

Yes, it probably is. Although, I'll have to purchase a license. I don't really want to spend all the money, especially since it's an old laptop.

IDK man, I bought a key off oom @Jack_Bauer_ZA for windows 7 and there are instructions for installations and such, also it wasn't expensive.

Insert the windows 7 key during the windows 10 installation.

This worked man. I downloaded the Windows 10 ISO on Microsoft's website and inserted the windows 7 license key and boom... it's activated. Thought I'd share this in case someone else has the same problem later on. Thanks once again to all.

I never knew this. But what has worked for me is just installing Windows 10 on a second and motherboard. I don't enter in serial during install but then after new boot and few downloads it pickups a previous license I guess

Oh okay, that's also good to know. I think Microsoft does this since their support only lasts a few years with whatever versions of windows (I think support for windows 10 ends in 2025)...I'm just not sure how long 1 license will last?
