Hi guys

Maybe one of you have been through this and can give some guidance/advice. ( Would be much appreciated )

My PC has now for a few times failed to boot into windows 10 - 64 bit ( Been updated to the latest update automatically )

Doesn't fail every time - appears to be random

The windows logo comes up and then next thing, black screen

Windows can't do a startup repair for some reason, I can only get into windows the past 2 times by doing a system restore.

Things I have done to locate / rectify the problem

Checked motherboard code - A0 ( All seems fine )

Ran the following

checkdisk for the boot drive - All good
Prime 95 - Cpu temps look normal
Unigine Valley - Score is on par with other cards ( Temps looks good)
Windows Memory Diagnostics - Reports all good
Hdd Sentinel - No bad sectors and drives are 100% healthy

Now since running all those tests just to see if my hardware is functioning normally windows must have rebooted about 10 times
Haven't had any issues since then

Ran all the tests for gpu, ram and cpu at stock speeds

Ran them again with XMP enabled and CPU @ 4.5ghz

Had no problems

Any advice ?

Been updated to the latest update automatically

1709 -> 1803?

Yea, its a very unstable build. 3 work PC's failed to boot after this update. To be fair they where all identical PC's.

Had to format and reinstall 1703. Then blocked windows update.

Yeah, seems I'll have to reinstall.
That sucks

Not sure of the current version, I'll check when I get home

Can't I roll back to a previous build?

Same here, except my media pc screen does not go black, i got a BSOD. And also unable to repair.
Had to do a format and install W10 again, was still busy when I left for work though, so hope all is still going ahead

Ditto. 1803 kept failing to upgrade properly so I just did a reinstall.

Do a driver update at the same time and my motherboard driver were updated just for 1803.

It’s a problem version of Windows for sure.

Thanks for the feedback guys, @Flex Hope all is sorted when you get back home.

I'm going to see if I can roll back on windows or use a restore point.
If that fails then guess ill have to format and reinstall.

1803 also fails on my system for some reason. It sounds like you are stuck in an update loop. In my case the loop stopped after the 3rd go around. Now I have to manually force the update if I want to waste 40+ minutes of my life.

Basically the way it works is:
Download update and install. Windows reboots and fails generally around 15-45% and supposedly starts doing a rollback.
Once that is done boot to black blank crashed non-functional desktop.
Kill the power to the system.
Boot it up again.
Windows does some form of black magic restoring last known good configuration (by itself, not from boot menu).
And hey presto back in fully functional 1709 version Windows after another 20 minutes.

That said it's not yet essential for anything and actually breaks some gamery stuff (can't remember what but it was a niche thing) so actually best to get out of the loop and avoid it for now.

I suspect I have some Vista era driver it doesn't like. But I'm not willing to go without those devices so well....screw 1803.

Makes sense, thanks for the explanation.
So i'll just kill the update when i'm in a functioning win10 and leave it as is.
Disabling updates offcourse

A clean install to 1803 should be fine, its just the upgrade process from 1703 is the issue.

I dont recommend going back to 1703 otherwise it will still update you at a later stage unless you fully know how to block the update.

No need to disable updates. I know there are some steps to just kill that particular update loop although in my case Windows itself seemed to give up after the 3rd fail.
Just google how to get out of the loop.

I know MS is still rolling out normal updates for 1607 and 1709 and I suspect earlier versions as well.

At least my system got rid of the random freezes introduced by 1511 at some point.

Thanks @Mast3rBlast3r
I'll have a look at how to get out of the loop
