So I upgraded my PC recently and I have that urge to do my final upgrade and change my screen. I currently have a LG 24" 144hz 1ms 1920x1080.

I want the following screen: Any good make, 2560x1440p, 144hz at least, 1ms. So basically I just want to go 2K now. The only problem is some of those screens are quite pricey (10K + Range) for the specs I'm looking for but for quite a couple grand less I can get a screen with same specs but 4ms. What I want to know is what is the best type of panel and VN, etc. and how big is the difference between 1ms and 4ms at 144hz?

Thanks

Best value for money? Probably what I have, Dell S2716DG. Only con I can say is that it is a TN panel, not IPS. That's about it.

I'd actually love to see a decent 1440p panel in person so I can know what the big fuss is moving from 1080p to 1440p...

Yeah sorry was a bit vague, is it a big con? That's what I'm trying to figure out now, is the ms and type of panel a big deal breaker and how much of a difference will be compared to the higher end.

Be careful believing response times, especially on VA / IPS panels. TN is much more accurate.
Often will quote MPRT response instead of Grey to Grey
This might help you a bit , understanding response times. input lag , motion blur , refresh rates , etc

After looking at a few screens this 1 doesn't seem like a bad price for what I will be getting?

Not a bad price at all. I have the Mecer 32 inch 1440p 144hz curved monitor and I paid around the same. Really happy with my purchase. I have g-sync enabled too so that was a nice little bonus as it stated it was only AMD freesync compatible

Was literally deciding between these 2 most of the night.

If you want the best, buy the R9K+ VA panel monitors, if you on a budget, the sub-R8K VA panel ones are fine (especially if you coming from a TN panel).

There's a reason they cheaper than the R9K+ monitors, and it shows in the color quality and brightness usually.
I'd probably rate the monitors as IPS > VA (>R9K) > VA (<R8K) > TN

PS. If you not in a hurry, why not wait till Black Friday, it's only a month away? There's usually good deals for monitors, I wish I waited the year I upgraded mine, could've saved quite a bit on my monitor. 😓

I would really like to hear the opinion of someone who has tried both the Mecer and AOC, the AOC claims 1ms.

Coming from my S27a950d 120hz which from what I understand is a TN panel I immediately noticed the motion blur effect, especially on darker scenes.

I'm told this is a common issue with VA panels. Im curious if AOC has applied some voodoo to make the blur less noticeable. They are both similarly priced, so I wonder if it's just marketing crap and the both just use the same panel.

Edit: another thing you might want to wait for since the monitors are out, Asus and LG both have new ips 1440p monitors out which use some new tech to bring the g2g response time to that of TN. Giving you the best of all worlds. Not sure if these monitors are coming to SA, I saw a review on Linus tech tips a few months ago.

Heres the lovely total price with SA TV tax etc baked in.

Linus actually done a review of the AOC monitor, he showed the only way to actually get that is with a certain setting, but it makes everything look terrible quality-wise.

Oh right, I remember seeing this. It's like backlight strobing or something?

Only reason I didn't go for a premium ASUS 144 IPS is that their QA sucks wrt uneven backlight/bleed issues and local suppliers don't test this before selling. Seems the word quality is only reserved for marketing in ASUS

Yup was considering the acer predator or Asus ips panels for years. But always came back to if I'm paying R13k for a monitor why should I also have to worry about QC. Dealing with RMA with local distros is almost never a pleasent experience.
