What new monitor? Ultrawide, dual or just big?

Hi

I am a bit lost right now and hope the Carb audience can guide me.

My current setup is just adequate -
  • i5 7400 with 16GB of RAM
  • Primary monitor - Ollllllld 23" Samsung LCD (2333sw) driven by an RX570 8GB
  • Secondary monitor - 19" 4:3 driven by a GTX560Ti
The answer to your WTF question is that I had problems getting both monitors to run off the RX570 so I just left the GTX in there - it seems fine.

The last bit of context is that I use dual-screen quite a bit for work - main Word or Excel on one screen - reference material on the other screen as well as a little bit for casual gaming (i.e. googling Sea of Thieves tips, hints, information on my secondary monitor while playing off my primary monitor).

Right now I am building a CCTV setup for my house and am considering using my 23" Samsung LCD as the monitor for the DVR so I can upgrade my monitor setup.

I wouldn't really want to spend much more than R5k-R6k so I am looking at second hand and new monitors. As I see it, I have been considering..
  1. Dump both monitors and buy 1 x ultrawide, around 32" so I don't lose the height of my current 23" and 19" which are roughly about the same size vertically. I am a bit worried about this option as I'm not sure how elegantly "multi-screen" outputs work on 1 monitor and whether it would offer a similar look and feel to my current setup when I need to run multiple windows / applications side by side. I'm also not sure about my PC's ability for one card to drive that one big screen so well.
  2. Dump both monitors and buy 1 x 32" 16 x 9. I guess driving higher res is still a question mark here but given that it is 16x9, despite the increased real-estate again I am worried about what it means in terms of working with side by side documents.
  3. I guess this third option would be a buying either of the above but then also keeping the 4:3 19" next to it - but I kinda like the idea of getting rid of two monitors and replacing them with one.

Am I missing anything here - any thoughts / experiences / comments?

Going ultra-wide is a perfect choice, cleans up your desk, and makes multitasking simple, i personally run a 34 inch 2560 x 1080 144hz ultra wide, its perfect for work and gaming, only downfall I have noticed is that text is a little blurry due to the resolution, i know its not within budget but 1440p would be better especially if you're using it primarily for work/ reading / writing.

I'm not sure how well your RX570 8GB will run on an ultra-wide,but it should be fine for what you're doing.

Multitasking is very seamless, using some windows shortcuts, i use a 24" as my 2nd monitor, but still prefer just the ultra-wide, you won't be disappointed

Two years ago at work we were given the option of a single 34” or larger, or two 24” monitors. We ALL voted dual monitor and there were no regrets. Being productive is just so much easier on two monitors (I guess if you can find something 32:9 it could work, but 21:9 just doesn’t have enough real estate. Two monitors is equal to 3840x1080/5120x1440, which is niiiiiiiice.

YESPLEASE!

Thanks all!

I am leaning towards a 32-34 ultra-wide. :)

Definitely a solid choice. Just make sure you get ones where the resolution is 1440p or above otherwise you won’t benefit much in terms of screen real estate. :)

Will do!
