So I've shared my website on that other site, and was keen to get some fresh feedback over here. Do you get it, and is this something you could see yourself using?

www.overhere.co.za

There's a poll too.

I don't wanna share more yet coz the website has to stand by itself so your "cold" impressions are valuable :) Thanks in advance!

My courier company of choice uses what3words | Addressing the world

I think the challenge is firstly adoption, then there not being a standard (thus maybe reverting to the largest name in the industry), therefore adoption with people not knowing what platform to memorize or note their address keyword for, and then lastly is the ease of inputting into a site (what format, and why not accept multi-platform).

Just my 2c without having had a chance to have a look at your site though!

I don't see any benefit of this over what 3 words. In terms of communicating your address it seems to fall between what 3 words and Google's plus codes.

Nice work , you should collab with vehicle tracking companies this in the long run will put you and your product on the MAP
Well, anybody who has the contacts for a tracking company's operations manager or general manager, let me know ;P

what3words is commercial, so if what3words closes you're stuck in the water. Mapcodes and Plus Codes are open source so you can own the conversion libraries. Personally I just prefer the Mapcode format to the Plus Code format (I am considering adding Plus Code conversion as an alternative to my site), but the real magic is in some of the other tools I'm developing around Mapcodes (check out the Off-Road Navigator for a taste of that).

Ok, so just to give y'all a teaser of what my Off-Road Navigator looks like, here's a screenshot from this weekend:

Those orange circles are cookie crumbs that drop every three seconds (they help you find your bearings when navigating off-road).

I think there could be some benefit in being able to export and share the cookie crumbs too (like guided walks or route monitoring), so will look into that.

Are you cookie crumbs being dropped via satellites in real time hmmm as vehicle tracking rely on GPS signals and have a special gadget to track RF signals from the air

Errrr, you seem to be a bit confused there boss. There are two kinds of vehicle tracking, RF based (via triangulation) and GPS-based (usually reported via GSM).

My website generates cookies real-time by querying your mobile device's GPS position (you have to explicitly permit that), so yeah ... try it out and see for yourself :) Just remember that cookies aren't dropped by satellites, they'd get mouldy if they fell from that high up.

Far from confused sir I was the Operational SUP nightshift 4+ years for south africas largest tracking company ,

:) ... I am still contact with most response crews so looking at your website is rather interesting to me

Well that's cool, let me know if any of them are interested in a behind-the-scenes ... Mapcodes are something anybody can integrate into their own systems, and I'm really keen to see more people locally starting to benefit from this :)

So dearest Carbies, I just want to check if you think I'm still headed in the right direction.

After giving 'ease of use' a lot of thought, I just launched updates to two of my site's main pages today:
  1. Get a better address (best for PC): Get a better address
  2. Share my location (use this on your phone): Share my location

The two biggest improvements:
  1. Instead of forcing users to select their mapcode region upfront (which would feel unfamiliar to new users), I'm rather displaying all possible mapcodes for the same location and letting users' choose the best one for them.
  2. I've improved the 'share' link functionality to now integrate into the 'share' pane on cellphones via the 'navigator.share' API (it still defaults to 'Copy' on PCs) ... basically it's a LOT easier to share direct URLs on phones now.

Better? Worse?

Looks similar to an app I’ve worked on before :p There is potential in what you are doing so keep working on it and commercialize it when you’re ready :)

Some of y'all might be interested to take another look at this page on my site that I've just updated: Get a better address

Two key changes:
1) There's now a real-time dialog showing you mapcodes as you drag the marker around:
58952

2) To counter all those negative nellies saying "Ooooh, but what about Open Location Codes" (Google's system), I finally got around to integrating that conversion as well under the 'Which is the best mapcode for you?' radio buttons. Dunno about you, but "ZAF PRM.CR" (mapcode) seems way easier to me to use and even remember than "5G367QQ3+V5" (Open Location Code for same area). Just know that 'ZAF' is the country code for South Africa and applies to all mapcodes in South Africa, so you don't even have to count that.
DISCLAIMER: On the above, I have to point out that OLC allow for a similar shortening of the code if you include the region with the code (e.g. "5G5CV3R3+C3" can be shortened to "V3R3+C3 Sandton"), but "V3R3+C3" is a lot more complex than "J77.X5B" when you consider you'd need to know that the code falls within the 'Sandton' region (rather than just somewhere in South Africa).

What do you think? Is it getting more intuitive?

Just to elaborate on the post above, where I just used a 'general' example, there are fringe cases (like Cape Town) where the mapcode codes really smile on an area:
58953

Now, if you had to choose an address for a place, which would you prefer between 1, 2 or 3?

Fans of physical addresses keep saying "Jah, but you'd have no hope of finding "LM.RG6" without your website ... and so? You're not going to find "21 Artisan Way, Blackheath Industrial" sommer by driving around and asking people in Constantia "Do you know where this is? How do I get there?".

Hi everybody, just a quick note to let you know that I've upgraded the homepage of www.overhere.co.za

Things are now a lot more seamless to use (especially on a mobile device).

What do you think? Is it intuitive enough, or are there still some rough edges that confused you that I can iron out a bit?

Wow, almost a year after my previous post above, same question: I've just updated my homepage again and I'll greatly appreciate any more feedback! I'm still putting effort into streamlining the experience, so there's a shed-load of new functionality since last year. Thanks in advance :)
