Hey guys, my specs go;

CPU - i7 930 2.9 (octacore)
GPU - Gigabyte G1 gaming GTX 970
Ram - 8 GB DDR3 Kingston fury black
Mobo - gigabyte X58A-UD3R (rev.2)
SSD - Corsair 256GB x2 (Raid 0)
HDD - 2TB WD green
Cooling - antec mercury 360 (stock fans) Bottom exhaust
Case - Corsair carbide 600c (3 x 140mm fans) inverted case

At the moment running CPU boost it only reaches 3.1ghz, getting 43 max degrees (Hardware monitor) after running pubg for about 2+ hours.

Would I have any benefit from overclocking a first gen CPU, and is it even possible?

I have only dabbled slightly in overclocking and know basically nothing, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I'm no pro at overclocking. Why would you want to overclock though? For a specific reason or just for fun?

Both, majority because I can tho. But also, to see what it can do. I'm upgrading my cpu soon, I have the ram and mobo for my new kit, just need a cpu.. so if it goes bust, I am upgrading any case.

I had a 920 and a 960 once upon a time. With a good air cooler (can't remember what now) I ran the 960 at over 4GHz (4.2 I think) for a long time. I didn't know much at the time either and it was really easy. I remember it either being rock solid or not even booting. Once you find an overclock that boots chances are it'll be stable.

So in your opinion it is worth it?

That’s a different question entirely, but yes.

If you doing it for fun...the fun of overclocking is more about the process than the result, so that’s automatically worthwhile.
If you’re doing it for performance, a 30% overclock is likely so if that’s enough then it’s worth it :)

But I mean, worth attempting. With the temps and system, eg. Bottlenecking and such

Update:

Overclocked to 3.75ghz stable so far. Running stress tests to confirm, temps jumped to 52 degrees

Is this for a media PC? You could get it further if you wanted. A Delid would help.

^ i7 930 is soldered isn't it?
I think it's just glue, either way. I won't be d-liding because I'm not yet comfortable with this, eventually it will be my donor mobo for my NAS drive I'm running. Because it has 10sata ports.

But for now still in use as personal computer.
Until I receive a CPU for my maximus ranger mobo.
