Hey Guys,

Hope I can have some input from the community that has experience with these display Tablets. I'm a Photographer and Retoucher and looking to make my work flow easier.

I've been using the Wacom Intuos Pro (normal drawing tablet) for years and spend in excess of 8+ hours a day retouching. Looking to get a Display Tablet to ease eye strain (having some issues with my eyes).

Looking at either the Huion Kamvas 22 Plus or Wacom Cintiq 16. I would like the real estate of the 22" but I'm worried about quality/driver issues as most YT Reviews makes this out to be a wonderful budget option but if you look at other forums people are b!tching and moaning about drivers, lag, hovering etc.

So anyone with a Huion and would you recommend this? Else I feel more inclined to rather get the Wacom seeing that I've used them for years without fail.

Thanks to anyone sharing their insight.

Hey Anthony. As someone who is deep in the tablet rabbit hole; my advice would be to stick with your intuos and maybe get a better monitor instead. I recently got a mid range Asus proart display (2k resolution and comes pre colour calibrated) and im pleased as punch with it. The Problem with these display tablets is that they need to sacrifice things like colour accuracy or resolution in order to remain competitive (or cost over 40k). Also things like the screen protectors affect the image fairly significantly.

I would only get a graphical tablet if you were a painter who cant adjust to a screenless display

edit: to give context, im an illustrator and spend 8+ hours a day painting on these devices. Ive used Huion, Xp-pen but not wacom. Im currently moving away from display tablets for better ergonomics and more accurate image quality without breaking the bank

Hey man! Thanks for your input, I appreciate your reply. I see that you are selling your XP Pen for this very reason.

I currently have a Dell 4K (U2720Q) Display as well as an Asus PQ348Q 2.5K (Ultrawide) which are both great monitors, and I regularly calibrate with my Spider Pro. I have a problem with my eyes whereby I either sit on-top of the monitor or at least 80cm away. Anything in between and I have some issues (been to several Optometrists to try and figure this out to no avail). My reasoning was if I have something closer that I actually retouch on it might work out better. I can deal with the Tablet not being super colour accurate as I have my other screens to review on.

I guess my concerns are that I might get frustrated by my hand covering half the image as I retouch as well as the 1080p with the Photoshop UI Scaling being too intrusive. Other that that the quality issue with Huion/XP-Pen. I don't want to fork out R20k and it breaks down after a year or so. Some guys online have issues after only a few months and us not having a dedicated supplier in SA, I'm worried about returns/fixes etc.

My other thoughts where to get a 32" 4K panel and see if that solves the issue. Luckily I have a huge desk!

My SO has the xp-pen 22r pro and loves it.

0 driver issues. Initial install / calibration was a bit finicky but took maybe 30 minutes, and haven't had to touch it since.

She uses it daily.

Her only critique would be that the screen protector scratches rather easily. She's had hers for a year now and the area she draws on has a bunch of tiny scratches.

My answer to that is rather have that scratch than the screen itself, and I've confirmed that you can order them separately. Last quote i got was around R600 about 2 months ago.

The 1440p is nice, and she uses it for both drawing and her main display.

Sure says if you have the money / want name brand get the cintiq, but if you're not concerned about that and just want a good pen touch display that gives you pretty much everything the cintiq does, get the xp-pen.

As a side note though, she does say that the 22 may be too big for her personally as she only actually draws on a small portion of the screen, hence the one area being scratched up.

She's actually thinking about / considering swapping it out for a decent regular screen and then just getting an ipad pro for drawing, as she'd also like to be able to "draw in the wild". But this is more a personal preference type thing than anything, but maybe just something to consider

I definitely dont want to give the impression that the XP pen is low quality. Wacom competitors in general have really stepped up their game in the past 5 or 6 years. If you are dead set on a screen tablet then im sure there is something out there that will suit you that is relatively inexpensive. Perhaps an arm might work for you too though if its a problem of where your monitor is set up

the daughter studied concept art through Vanas. in school she had one of the genius tabbies and at one stage a really small wacom. when she started to study we were lookingh and i got her a huion Q11k ( it wasnt available locally, so imported via uk through a carbie, not scotty, think aminfri? ). it was just better specs and value for money than the equivalent wacom.

I think it was beginning lockdown, I picked up a wacom cth-690 from carbs, without a pen, and got the pen through loot. she tested it and went back to the huion. she says she prefers the slick surface of the huion, as it glides better. the wacom is supposed to be sightly rougher and mimic the feeling of paper. the wacom wasnt being used, and we recently passed it on to a friend whose daughter is studying graphic design.i did get the two boys each a wacom tablet however, was on special for around 1500 ea from takealot. the pens of hers and theirs wasnt compatible.

the only finicky thing she mentioned about the huion, was that she normally uses the desktop and tracels with a laptop. sometimes the one she had was finicky when switching over/traveling, and had to reset it , or something.

she recently got herself a huion Kamvas 13 inch and is blissfully happy with it . she switches it the whole time between the desktop and the laptop (not the same issue she had with her old huion). the drivers are also the same. the pens are not compatible between her old and her new huion tablets. the old tablet is a spare now in case anything happen to the kamvas.

my recommendation would be to look at the price point you want to spend, and also definitely consider the kamvas. she didnt buy the huion Kamvas through takealot, but the local supplier , i think, it was on special at that stage with them

there is also something similiar to the kamvas, but another brand(not huion or wacom), that do have local support in a manner of speaking. pop me a message tomorrow, and i will look in my whatsapps
