Good day Boys and Girls

I need help. How do you decide on a VR headset? I don't want it to do very complex things. I want to use it in games like Star Wars Squadrons and DCS world. It is basically for that extra immersion and headtracking. Do I need to go extremely expensive or are there cheaper options?

Find a second hand Oculus Quest or buy a Quest 2 and get a Link cable. Cheapest way for a decent setup imho

Agreed.

Some advice - Don't pay more than R7500 for a Quest 2 - you can order them from Amazon delivered to your door for that price. If someone is selling locally, don't fall for scalpers. They just put up barriers to entry in to VR with inflated pricing.

The Quest 1 is no longer on sale - you will probably find some insane local pricing for the Quest 1 - don't fall for it. Don't pay more than R6000 for a used Quest 1 I'd reckon.

Don't bother with the Rift or CV1 or Vive - unless you're getting a headset for like R5000 and below. Still some crazy pricing on those older generation headsets - don't fall for it.

*Cries in Rift 1 still*

My 2c, you don't decide on it, your mom decided on which one when she built you. When you are built like me, a halo based headset is kinda uncomfortable, but it also came with mechanically adjustable ipd for my eyes sitting a wee bit closer together than most, I live do with the halo and fortunately only use it seated, standing up and being really active will see it sliding off my head at some point crashing tears into the tiles. My 2c, buy a hard hat, remove the hat part, ziptie a buddy coke to the front so it rest on your face, feel how it sits, cut out the straps and have it rest on your forehead with the strap at the back tigething it. Not the best options but it beats spending on something that will kill comfort (yes my solution is uncomfortable, but shelling out R6k and then being uncomfortable is far worse). Best of both worlds now I think will be the Quest 2 as it can be had brand new without any hassles (except maybe stock levels and a waiting time)

Ok cool Thanks.

What difference is there between taking a headset that is 64GB and one that is 128GB?

I am completely new to this if it wasn't blatntly obvious.

Basically nothing if you are going to use it on your PC. That is just for the native games that run standalone on the Quest.

64Gb is fine I reckon for most things. BeatSaber is tiny for example.

The ONLY benefit I've found of the 128GB over the 64GB is media storage. Let me tell you - Quality and Immersive VR porn comes at a cost - each video is massive in size.
For gaming 64GB is sufficient.

Also, on the whole comfort factor opinions. Remember everybody has their own subjective views on it. Half the VR community take no issue with the comfort levels on the defacto out the box pre-mod Quest 1 or Quest 2 (myself included). The other half swear that it's from the devil on a comfort level.

It's quite simple addressing comfort issues with either official mods or unofficial mods. Don't let other peoples opinions sway your decision.
Said it before and it's probably worth mentioning again - no VR headset, not a single one on the market, is 'comfortable' strapped to your face for hours on end. Regular breaks are key :)
If you buy it and it and it's a bit uncomfortable - make it comfortable. Simple as that.

What worked for my Odyssey+ is the "velcro strap" mod. Basically two stretchy bands over the top so the halo becomes more like a cap. Infinitely more comfortable.

Whilst Quest and Quest 2 are good recommendations a PC VR headset is maybe a better option if your primary use cases are Squadrons and DCS where wireless and controller tracking aren't really an issue. In this case a PC VR option will have less latency, higher performance (due to there being no overhead either through Link or through Virtual Desktop wireless) and could be cheaper.

Do you have suggestions here for pc linked headsets, im also rather interested to give VR a go, but i also know very little. Also suggested retailers if you have an idea?

Heya. To be honest I kinda retract my statement above. I think they've improved the link quality since then and I think the performance overhead shown in tests was mistated (in that you can't compare resolutions in Steam VR or something). So honestly the Quest 2 is probably the best at its price.

Aside from that if buying new I think your only real option in terms of availability these days is the Quest 2 and probably your best bet for the price range. For outright best image quality I think HP Reverb G2 is the winner but it isn't the best for tracking etc. I believe. The Index also has advantages, can't remember exactly, but I think wider FOV etc.

All that said, I miss the oled screens of my Samsung Odyssey+ the contrast and colors cannot be matched even closely.

Still applies

Thanks for the info Montezuma. and thanks for the link Andy. Reading it now.

If someone contacts you on your published mobile number saying they're from Carbonite - you should verify that first.
Rather not put your number on here - you're opening yourself up for some potential hurt.

Nice headset - GLWS
