Been a original cv1 owner for a few years now and its served me very well (right audio issues popped up a while ago but worked around it), I was hoping to replace it with a valve index in the near future. Could someone here who has had one delivered to their door possibly pm me what you paid. I saw a price of 40k but surely that cannot be accurate?

Havent had one delivered but it quotes at around R27k which was just too hard for me to pull the trigger at

This is via an importer who does everything for you,

I was guestimating around 24-5k. Will need to sell a kidney or at the very least someone else's.

Which is the argument in favour of Quest2
It's not an Index, it's tied to FB but for +-R8k with the specs it has - it's just in a league of it's own

For those wondering... the lower tax and customs charge you get when there is more than just the Quest in your cart is in fact the correct amount. So when the Quest is on its own the tax is overcalculated somehow.

Well someone is offering a bounty to whomever can jailbreak/crack/whatever its called the Quest. But I don't think there is any open legit way to do it.
It's been Jailbroken as of yesterday.

There are other methods to use a Quest 2 without a FB login - I have one of my Quest 2's working perfectly without a FB logon. Having an issue with my other Quest 2 - I only have one Oculus account and theres no way to create new Oculus accounts :(

Was just wondering if perhaps other folks know of other methods.

My past experience with Amazon, when tax was overcalculated I received a refund for what I was overcharged a month or so after the package was delivered.
But it's obviously better to order something small with the Q2 instead of hoping on a refund.

What's your take on the Q2 in person - having come from owning a Q1?

How well does Oculus Link work on PC? Quest 2 seems like a great device, although I've read that Link has issues with latency compared to using a Rift S for example?

I would wait until the Link 2.0 (or whatever it is meant to be) update is released. Supposedly it will allow for 90hz, higher link bandwidth etc. As it stand currently a lot of people are saying virtual desktop streaming performs better but that is assuming you have a decent 5ghz router, in the same room, hardwired to your PC, and with the 5ghz channel dedicated to the Quest.

Apparently, there are some settings that can be changed to improve the Quest Link quality (still 72Hz for now though):
Oculus Link Update: Quest 2 Visuals Can Rival PC Headsets

Also check out ShadowVR.

I'm going to try and give it a go while building a VR/Gaming rig again.
It's available in Sidequest now so no need to run from VD, reducing another latency source.

Removes the dependence on having a gaming rig for playing PCVR.

Not sure how viable it will be based in SA...but might be worth having a go...considering they offer a 14 day money back guarantee if you're not satisfied

Happy gaming on your new headsets guys!
I'm gonna wait for the G2 though. Hoping it lands in SA next month.
I'm sure you will enjoy it.

I'm completely skipping over the G2 - can't see the value in it at the price point and just can't deal with going down the WMR rocky road again.

I will however be getting this if/when it launches :) - Lets see what May 2021 brings.

TLDR: I don't have any issues with latency and although currently not as good as a wired VR solution in terms of image quality this is improving (as can be seen with the changes to the current Beta release).

My experience with regards to latency has been very good so far. Played and finished superhot over link and never once noticed latency. When playing beat saber I get more or less the same scores at expert as compared to playing directly on the Q2. (expert+ is for the insane people without joints...)

In the end the biggest compromise you are going to make with link at the moment is not latency but compression in your image. Think playing 1080p on a 1440 p monitor but this is improving as they unlock more bandwidth. Looks a hell of a lot better at the new 500 mbps setting.

I always wonder how many people report latency over link when what they are in fact observing is frame time issues due to their hardware not being able to keep up. The confusion is likely due to the use of frame times ( in ms the same measure as lag) to measure performance instead of FPS. The fact that this performance issue looks like server lag/latency in online games doesn't help either.

For those who want some detail a high frame time of 13.8 ms and above (or 72 FPS and below in normal speak) will result in stuttering which looks like latency/lag. This stuttering is because your headset running at 72Hz refreshes its screen 72 times every second so if your system can't supply it with 72 FPS or a frame every 13.8 ms you will experience stutter as the headset has to wait for the next frame to be delivered.

This issue is purely a result of your PC's hardware performance not link latency. At the Q2 native resolution of 3440 (set in the oculus debug tool) my 1080ti struggles to achieve the needed frame time in HL: Alyx. This makes sense since a 1080ti struggles to hit 144hz at 1080p in normal PC titles. That being said it is perfectly playable at a resolution of 2912 on medium graphics. The problem is that when they release the 90Hz update I will have to drop the resolution further in order to achieve an FPS of 90 or a frame time of 1/90 = 11.11 ms or below. A 6800XT or 3080 is definitely in the cards for next year.

An over simplification but will hopefully help clear some confusion wrt the latency performance discussion.

I am really hoping that they resolve these issues with future oculus desktop updates and allow games themselves to access these settings the way we do with most PC titles.

So yeah. My elite head strap just cracked. Seems the reports that it's a piece of crap are true....

Edit: If you are planning on buying this be aware that there are some bad batches out there. 7% of reviews on Amazon are now 1 star with pictures of broken straps. Based on my discussion with oculus support I am pretty damn sure their manufacturing quality is not standardized.

Representative sent me 3 different photos of how the serial number or manufacturing date might appear on the strap arms. This means they don't have standardized part numbers. My strap for example didn't have any marking on it at all, I had to give them the part number on the box.....very annoying.

Sigh, I'm enjoying my Elite Strap, but I also have one without the serial and know it can break any day now...
Did it happen while putting it on or taking it off?

Noticed it in the afternoon, just before putting it on for the first time that day. Since it's a new piece of expensive tech, I have been quite fastidious in checking the device before and after use. I am very confident there were no visible/external cracks after my last use before failure (there was likely internal failure/cracking at this point).

I'm a mechanical engineer by profession and since I have in the past been paid to investigate failure modes I can at least take an educated guess as to what caused it.

I observed the following two things:

1) After taking the photos posted above I removed the strap and placed it in the box. Without touching it again the crack propagated further. Once the crack had propagated almost straight to the other side of the arm I lightly pulled on it causing the arm to separate at the point of failure.

2) During the above process and before mechanically separating it the arm began to show torsional deformation (think twisting a fizzer).

This makes me believe that over time uneven force applied across the cross section of the arms (by the ratchet mechanism and geometry of ones head) causes internal stress in the material. The crack was caused by the material trying to relieve this stress, which is confirmed by the fact that the material twisted as the crack progressed.

The ratchet mechanism itself seems to apply non rectilinear force, which you can test yourself by dialing in the arms when the strap is not mounted. You will feel a slight upwards or downwards force at the end of the arms when they are retracting. When assembled and mounted the irregular geometry of your head causes deviations in the expected rectilinear arm motion causing shear stress . This will cause shear failure (normally seen as cracks) in brittle materials, brittle material being material that can resist compression or tension but not bending or shear forces.

Overall my guess is this is a result of poor quality control in one of the batches.

Will keep you up to date with the response from Oculus. Haven't contacted Amazon yet since the official Oculus response was that one should contact their customer support directly...and I also want to resolve this without haven't to courier things back and forth internationally.

So this seems to be all over the news outlets now

So far my discussion with Oculus has been that they are aware of the issue but require my patience while they investigate further. They pretty much can't send me a replacement until they know the replacement won't suffer from the same issue.

My Elite Strap is holding up well so far and from what I've seen from a few Youtube videos it can be pretty damn robust if the batch was good.

Hopefully they figure it out soon, because it makes a huge difference in terms of comfort, if I make it tight enough I can shake my head left and right without it moving at all and hitting my nose like the other headsets I have.

Currently on a mission to get the perfect wireless set up with Virtual Desktop.

So I did the das upgrade on my quest 2 was really worth it. Tried Pavlov last night and kinda addicted now 😅. Need a gun stock now because aiming sucks
