VR chat

Hi everyone - so I'm trying to get VR for some sim racing and well there is no budget for this so I'm trying to get it set up for as dirt cheap as possible.

I got myself a VR Box headset for my smart phone to try out with Riftcat just to see how things work etc... After a bit of a mission setting it up I got it running with Assetto Corsa and seemed good but seem to get a bit of lag from time to time on a 5ghz wireless network.

I know that a smartphone isn't really made for this in the long run but as a cheap interim solution it might just work for me.

So I have a theory regarding the usb connection and using that rather than the wireless connection - I have a Sony Xperia XZ premium and the standard charging cable isn't usb 3.0 (and way to short :) ) so I would like to pose the question - would a usb 3.1 cable help where it comes to any latency issues? (obviously to be used via usb 3.0 port)

the other thing is that I am looking at is a cheap little bluetooth controller to use with the VR set so that I don't have to use either keyboard or xbox controller to emulate VR controller which kind of "overlaps" in game where a button that is mapped in game is also a button mapped in Riftcat - so my question is - would this work with the setup I am trying to do and has anyone ever tried something like this before?

Obviously I would love to get a proper VR set but finding a cheap one (+/- 2500) isn't easy and missed a rift for that price once, but as a very cheap approach to VR, this could be a start?

It's to be used in a seated position only. I've looked at the oculus go but that I believe from other posts I've read up on, is not a good route to go...

Played a good two hours of Subnautica yesterday afternoon, which then had to be put on hold as the nausea got a bit intense from sitting still and swimming up and down the whole time.

Had great fun with Robo Recall and Superhot on Saturday though

I think Subnautica is responsible for my VR legs - I played many many hours in there and I'm pretty immune to the nausea now.

TLDR - put a wanted add out for VR headset. Budget R2500

- a Windows Mixed Reality set will serve your purpose beautifully - they are super well priced, biggest drawback being the ergonomics and tracking of the controllers - and in a racing sim you don't need those anyway :D score!
- they do inside out tracking so don't require any base stations which is hassle and extra setup and wires.
- the first generation is being phased out so you should be able to pick a set up secondhand from somebody who is upgrading.

I have no experience with riftcat and cannot answer any of your questions relating to that, sorry. But my 2c - don't bother with any 3DOF solution [hack], in comparison to a 6DOF headset it is TERRIBLE and should never have been a thing.
You could even search for an Oculus DK2 - that was 6DOF tracked, you might be able to find one for cheap, but they're kinda collector's items now so....

Thank you very much for your input - appreciate it. Post was lengthy yes but had to try and explain what I'm trying to accomplish and had to explain to specific parts.

I have heard about the WMR headsets. I didn't publish a wanted post because I've seen the prices of some of the VR sets going here so I thaught it would just be a waste, BUT, I'll give it a shot - noting to loose right.

So - thoughts on Cosmos?

The best phone, the fastest phone, the most resilient phone, we have ever made...

Their video looks to mimic apple's approach:
"the highest resolution display we've ever put into a vive display",
"88% better clarity than the original",
"since day 1 we've always...",
"our lightest and arguably most comfortable headset",
"the most room we've ever had in a vive",
"so you can stay connected longer",
"even more water resistant that the previous models",
"our mission was to create best in class...",
"so developers don't have to put in more legwork",
"the quickest setup time of any pc based vr experience",
"unique benefit",
"the first headset to..."

IIUC international launch is 3 Oct

Still, judging from the past how long it took for them to bring out the different VR headsets in SA, I'm not getting my hopes up on it happening anytime soon.

F#$@ Yeah Oculus just announced oculus link

Connecting Quest to PC via USB-C!!!!

And Hand Tracking on Quest!!!

Many good announcements for Quest at OC6

Seems like Rift S is basically getting killed off.

Think we'll see a price drop for Rift S soon?

Why hasn't hand tracking been implemented already with a fancy glove covered in tracking points?

There are versions like that, but gloves are finicky - you need the right size for you - they make your hands sweat so are not great for sharing....I don't want to put on gloves another random person was wearing at an arcade - not the best solution.

As much as it is a slap in the face to people who purchased the rift, I'd probably still by a Rift S. By most accounts it is more comfortable, has better tracking, and the increased refresh rate and perceived resolution and better lenses interest me more than having a quest with a iink cable. Would like to see some reviews as the quest+link cable may be subject to compression and decreased graphical fidelity (though they say that they've only compressed the outer parts of the frame and the center is still uncompressed)

I want that Oculus link cable...
That 3 import limit thing though in South Africa is turning out to be a real pain. If anyone still have imports left, we could make a plan.

I really hope that as soon as the Link Cable is available it replaces the cable included in the box of Quests sold from there on after.
It would be very confusing for Oculus to put a cable in the box that is not compatible (USB 3) with Link.

I hope so too, but in the end it's a much more expensive cable. The one that came with the Quest is USB 2.0 with a Type C connector, think 3 meters long. Those are common.

The 5m cable Oculus wants to release not so much, $79 is actually a good price for one.
Going more than 3m on a USB3 cable is generally a pain in the ass though.

Where did you see the $79 price? (I haven't read all the press releases)

From some youtubers that were there, although they said it'll be in that range. The current cable is still a prototype, things like the clip haven't been finalized.

Just received my HP Reverb Pro from amazon today.
My first VR headset and looking forward to seeing what all the fuss is about.

And ? What are your thoughts? I really want to get VR for sim racing any advise ?

I'm curious - considering the price and the 'issues' on this device - and also considering this is your first foray in to VR , for less money and more value and of course something a lot more mainstream and polished - any reason you didn't consider the Oculus Quest or even the Rift S ?

Word of advice - don't base your total VR experience on solely this WMR experience with this specific headset. The Rift and Vive ecosystems are much more streamlined and forgiving to newcomers and have had the time to continually tweak as they go along which allows their users to have a better VR experience. The Oculus offerings in particular have gone through a few iterations and have learnt and applied those lessons learned to each successive model/option.

I grabbed the Rift s from amazon. My 3rd headset after rift 1 and odyssea +

I will say this. The picture quality is really good. The fit on my head is amazing. And the oculus user experience is far better than windows mixed reality.

Ask away

How would you compare the Rift S to Odyssey + display quality wise?

Slightly better imho, not a lot, but enough to notice. The POV is rather small though, like looking through binoculars
