So, H hideinlight I chatted to Amazon support and they said it should be able to ship to SA no problem, they asked for my address details to adjust the system on their end. (I've used their support before when an item seemed to have the wrong shipping and tax pricing).
Nice one, this will help a lot in the future. Can only afford the Quest atm, so went and preordered that one. Still waiting for the Vrcover for my Rift, so that I can eventually sell it when I need to.

The one cable thing on the S have me pondering about backpack pcs again. Especially with the new nvidia mobile gpus etc coming out.
Exciting times ahead.

Doubt I'd be rich enough for the index.

Did you order Quest 64Gig or 128Gig?

FYI, I've bought and used this HDMI extension cable (used with Samsung Odyssey+) and works 100% for me:

Also, seems like Index is sold out and only available "on hold" to ship from August!

64Gig.
I just could not justify the extra 64Gig for $100 (R1500 with imports and stuff) extra. Would of been nice, but the price difference was too much for me. 64Gb did work out ok for the GO. So in order to be able to eat for the month, I went with the 64 instead.

Rift S is now shipping to SA. Woot woot. Now is it worth it if I already have an Odyssey+
Odyssey+ = better visuals
Rift S = better controllers and tracking

EDIT: Shipping to SA through Amazon that is.

Since the Rift S has no physical IPD adjustment, with the IPD done via software adjustment as was the case with the DK2, one wonders whether it will be enabled for the DK2 again...

The Rift S works out at R7,647,68 in total to get to South Africa
That's pretty good...I imported a CV1 last September for just over R8k...and technically that would still need a third sensor to be on par roomscale wise...and RS has better optics and resolution.

Looking at the HP Reverb...
Does anyone else get the sense that Oculus was involved?
Here's my theory.... (absolute unsubstantiated hogwash)

Oculus was partnered with HP but they had a falling out somehow...perhaps on price point perhaps on something else...perhaps HP weren't willing to make the kind of compromises Facebook was pushing for...or perhaps the other way round...perhaps they were collaborating on the CV2 that got cancelled (and is why Brendan Iribe left.)
What if Oculus and HP were full steam building a CV2 but they ran into problems with tech that "just isn't ready yet" (eye tracking, foviated rendering, wide FOV, variable focus....wireless). HP couldn't deliver, had to make several compromises, were eager to get a product out and weren't willing to wait 3 years for tech to mature to put out a true Gen 2 headset. All the while Oculus (Facebook) were pushing for things that couldn't be done and even if they could, there's no way to do them at an acceptable price point yet. What if Iribe put his neck on the line somehow and this all went to the shitter leaving Iribe in the middle...alone...holding the stick of dynamite as the lit fuse disappeared into it.

This left Oculus with desperately whoring about for a new hardware partner looking for a deal.
They had the Insight tracking and new Touch controllers ready to go....so they did a quick frankenstein with Lenovo....caring about little else than the price...if the price is right Facebook is happy....and Lenovo just won the copyright battle with Playstation to licence their halo headband, so there was no other choice for that.

HP...left with a hell of an R&D bill and a half baked HMD...(really comfy Oculus clone) - had already licensed WMR's tracking previously...and they were desperate not to walk away from this costly endeavor without a product to show for it. And in spite calls the product Reverb ....as a subtle stab at Rift.

Not the first time I've heard this theory. Pity about the reported mura issues on the Reverb, although many say it isn't that bad once you're in active scenes and it is only noticeable on bland backgrounds. I wish MS would release updated controllers as right now the only reason I'm thinking of getting a Rift S is because touch controllers > WMR controllers on the Odyssey+, but I wanna see "through the lens" comparisons of Rift S and Odyssey+, the latter does have higher res and the anti SDE tech but the former might be on par due to RGB LCD.

Eyeing the Valve Index...
They seemed to have nailed the finger tracking on the knuckles controller, everything on it seems great.

But the Freedom the Quest provides, I must experience it...
It works just about everywhere where there isn't direct sunlight shining on it. So you can find a spot outside with adequate shade and have 6x6m play area just like that.
Saw people disabling the guardian completely and using an entire field to play an RPG.

IDK, it is like the choice between a console and a PC (the Quest is basically a VR console). The limitations of the much less powerful platform does not appeal to me.

Unfortunately wireless technology isn't at that point yet where I would of liked it to be, it feels like politics and legalities are holding back that department. People still stuck with 2.4Ghz and 5ghz. Also try creating a 5Ghz hotspot with your phone, you can't.

5th generation networks aren't mature and available enough. So that all in one ultimate solution headset does not exist for VR yet.
But the Quest is the milestone needed to get to that point..

Atm to gain that 6dof wireless experience, the Ques the best bet.
Which basically means you'll have to live without post processing and dynamic shadows for most games.

Does not look that bad at all, but ya the future looks pretty good. That's a 2 and a half year old snapdragon powering that.

First contact is not exactly a demanding VR experience. How does the Quest fare on say Sairento, Skyrim VR, Tales of Glory or XPlane 11?

Edit: I see they are working on a port of Sairento VR, so that will be interesting... Quest vs Rift S + 1080Ti

There's a 2 hour video form upload VR where they test most of the releases. So far most of the games look relatively the same, dependent on if they went for a realistic look or not.
Dynamic shadows and post processing (bloom etc) seems to be two things that are missing most. And for realisim lightning is the key, that's why there's an RTX meme going around.

But in the end I want to do something like this excluding the barrel roll.

The Quest falls more into the realm of Mobile Console...e.g. Nintendo Switch. I see PSVR as the (very literal) console equivalent to PCVR.
Comparing it to a Switch it's clear that the Quest is not for everybody....but it does have its place in the market and certainly it's aimed at a "low entry barrier" market.
The same way that Index is not that interesting to everybody...but those who already own a 2080Ti are obviously placing their orders.
