I loath extremists of every kind. What really frustrates me is (a) the zero diplomatic\thoughtful approach to change minds, and (b) the lack of actual research people put into their extreme approaches. Vegan, vegetarian, Christian, Muslim, whatever, you can argue for your point of view, but don't be a dick about it. Screaming at someone that they are wrong seldom does much to change their mind.

And as for the research issue...jeez. I recall an incident many years back where a group of extreme animal rights activists broke into a fur farm in the UK, specifically, a mink fur farm. As an aside, the fur industry is generally pretty fucked up and I have no issue with protesters who want to get these farms shut down, but shut them down sensibly. What happened in this scenario was that they just went around smashing up the place and released all the minks. Minks are basically super vicious ferrets. And hundreds of these things were released into the surrounding area. The end result was literally every small mammal and ground dwelling bird was annihilated for dozens of square km around this area, and the local ecosystem got proper fucked.

Someone commented about ensuring ethically sourced meat. This is incredibly important and covers grains and nuts as well. When the quinoa (which is really great) craze first started, I can guarantee you that people did not take not of the fact it was the staple food of the Bolivian lower class, and caused massive food security issues because the Bolivian producers rather (understandably) sold it at multiple times the prices to foreign markets. I mean, shit, you can still buy and eat the stuff, but don't be so smug about it (although I think the situation has stabilised by now). Almonds can also be problematic. California is one of the biggest producers in the world (if not the biggest), and water issues in the production areas have been destroying the aquifers which will have massive long term ramifications.

The list goes on.

Long story short, people must not be dicks and fucking lecture others when they have not done their due diligence.

I am a firm believer that vegans who actually take things too far without understanding what they are doing just lack meaning in their life and are seeking it through self victimization, pretending to care about animals lives but don't take into consideration all aspects.

Choosing to ear meat from a butcher who has sourced the meat from farms where the cattle live outside and roam around, happy as a lark, is a great compromise to eating meat from battery farms. It's a start.

I have three words for you fellas and gals: rys, vleis en aartappels
yes, but what about all the little flocks of aartappels that were living in their burrows and holes, and then once a year get ripped up during the annual culling, separated from their siblings and put into paper pockets, with less space to move than the animals in wire cages at some oriental markets, with nothing to do but waiting for them to be sliced up, cooked, fried, and other unmentionable things?

One of the ladies on my floor was friends with me until she became a vegan extremist and passive aggressively posts shit on facebook about how bad meat is.
She only eats 'superfoods', a fictional term for normal food that has alleged magical powers but really doesn't.

Vegans are to health what religious fanatics are to spirituality. Leave em be. I just avoid all the extremist wierdos - except the CUD extremists of course. We speak the same language.

Ok, back to my braai now

On PETA euthanizing animals that don't get adopted.
What are you suggestions?
There is already too many people on the planet, and now you want the abundance of animals to sit in a cage all day?
You missed my point. You can't hate people who kill animals to eat them and then kill them yourself. It's Hypocrisy. The SPCA euthanizes animals after a set period that aren't adopted but they don't go round telling everyone not kill animals.

Do you understand my point? PETA violates the very thing they claim to stand for.

I heard about 50% of those things as they happened, and have never thought of PETA being a good organisation.

There are people that hate PETA based on only the fact that they euthanize animals and I think that there's not much to do about thousands of animals that will never be loved or cared for; all the other stuff that PETA does is disgusting at best.

I'll eat as much meat as I can afford. Couldn't care less what other people say about it.

Just accept the level of difference we have with each other and move on.

Whether it be religion, the death penalty, animal rights, if you spend enough time with anyone, even a close friend you will find something you disagree with at a fundamental level. That is the nature of humans. Accept it, move on.
This, life is better when you don't try seek out the next outrage.
