Hey All,
I'm looking for a good UPS or alternatively one of those 1KVA cabinet inverters for those loadshedding times. I only really plan on running my pc, modem and tv on it mostly (i have something for lights so just need something for entertainment).
Im completely lost when it comes to these things but was looking at this:
Or the cheap alternative and much shorter battery life this:

Anyone have their own setup at home? Any advice what works best for u and getting u through 1-2 hours of loadshedding?

Thanks in advance!

Get a kill-a-watt plug you can use to measure maximum and sustained power draw, then get an inverter assuming 80% efficiency for peak draw

Then use the watt x time to get an approximate battery capacity needed assuming 50% discharge for longer battery life

I have a small 300w to draw all my networking/network storage/internet devices and a bigger 1200w for tv/dstv/network storage

These run for about 4 hours on their respective loads

I have a 1kva ups powering a 42" guest tv and baby dstv decoder for an hour or so last I checked

Any weblinks to make model etc or provide so I can search as well?

Can any of these things handle something like a kettle / espresso machine?

Batteries are fairly easy, deep cycle gel/calcium of your flavour
The inverters components are mecer/mr power

It's a diy setup, prebuilt has a lazy tax added on

The burst load of heating elements are quite heavy, you'd pay a ton extra (triple the cost) for your coffee

have also wanted to do this, but then when you read from the more knowledgeable guys that they don't like them (think the modified sinewave), then I get turned down

does that one at least come with the/a battery/ies already included?

Plug and play. Came charged as well

It seems quite loud, I’m not sure if that’s the fans or the modified sine wave. I’ll do some research.

But it’s powering a 65”, router and DSTV at the moment and seems fine. So I’m happy.

My estate’s substation fried last night when Eskom switched the power back on at 20:30, we haven’t had power since and still don’t.

I've been eyeballing the following Axpert MEX 1.5K-12 1500VA 1200W 12V Hybrid Inverter - Sustainable.co.za
12v, pure sine-wave, ability to strap on solar panels later, more than enough for a 4790+1080+UW34+24inch

that doesn't come with battery though?

but yeah, I am also looking at one of those but a smaller version for outdoor usage and to do testing with for an office solution

actually want to get an electrician? to come and check for us from the mains what our usage is in 2 separate events;
1 - everything major off (geysers, fridges, pool)
2 - fridges still on

1 thing I am interested to know is, connecting a battery backup to a battery backup :p
@MSI1104 @eleventh @PJtheKILL3R

problem I encountered was running normal generator (yes I think it has AVR if that matters) that blew 2x 800VA UPS

now for one, I am not sure Line Interactive is really meant for this and 2, what can I add/change to again run that? (generator with 2x 800VAs)

something like those APC Voltage Regulators? a small inverter between the gen and the UPS?

It’s got a 1 Year warranty, but having 2 pop is not ideal. What was the issue with them?
Honestly don't know what happened. It was plugged in not loadshedding and just a soft whoosh sound and flames and electrical smoke.
They are not very efficient either the Pure Sine wave one I have lasts much much longer on the same batteries.. IF you are wondering I just got one from Communica and used the old batteries.

At the moment I am quite pissed off I have a Inverter Generator pure since wave . I had it serviced 3 weeks ago and used it on Thursday for 3 hours or so. No issues. Today it would not start.
Service cost me R1800. I bought petrol this morning so it cant be that.

I have 2 or 3 APC Line Conditioners that I use as well so maybe look into getting something like that. As I understand your genny killed your batteries or was it the whole thing.

I've been looking for the following solution options but can't find any.
I want a quality Pure Sine Wave inverter that provides at least 1200W power to which I can connect 4 105 Amp batteries.
But the inverters either need to connect to the db board or they're modified sine wave.

Yep, seemed to only be batteries however I really would like to get whole units tested sometime. Replaced the batteries.

Yeah the Line Conditioners is what was talking about so if that would help.

I was actually looking at doing this with one of those Axperts as I think the db connection is for charging which I was wondering if I just used the db connection and plugged it into a plug to get power......

What about those ones Scuba are selling?

which ones are scube selling, link?

This is a pretty sweet 800Amp combo: AGM Storage 4.80kwh - Load Shedding Kit - SolarAdvice
but once again I think the Axpert will only work through DB board and I have no idea if how to install it, or if I'm allowed and also according to an electrician I spoke to my db board won't work for what I want.

So I'd rather just focus on a standalone solution where the inverter plugs into a 220V and then plug my devices into it

My housemate had a discussion with me earlier today regarding putting us 'off the grid'...

He was looking more at solutions such as this:

But it seems he might be able to get by with much less of an investment if we want 2x PC's with 2 screens each, router, lights, etc running...

Yoh, that is a nice kit

Yeah I would also like to know what exactly is required from db to actually work with these installations

My father's business supplies things and knows quite a bit on it, has a good friend that is an electrician, if you looking for things PM me and I can direct you to him and he can quote you.

I am actually also curious if one can connect a setup with the Axpert like you would a normal generator with a manual change over switch directly to your mains

DB work just isn't going to be "cost effective" in our case

Received this.....anyone familiar with this?

We sell the Zelio 900VA Pure Sine Wave UPS inverter. This unit will run your DSTV, TV, WiFi, Laptop and a lamp for about 5 hours. The unit is ideal for running delicate electronics like a TV and Computer as it is a Pure Sine Inverter. The UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) will automatically swith over when Eskom power is down. No rebooting of WiFi, Laptop, TV or DSTV. When the Eskom power returns, our integrated 220V charger will recharge the battery.

Thinking of getting THIS for my ONT and Fibre router

Any idea what I can run for a 42" TV or for x2 PC's? (spec in my signature)
