Hi, would you mind helping me with some recommendations? I would like to be able to play games on decent graphics settings at around 60fps with 1920x1200 resolution.

Here’s what I have at the moment:
MSI B75MA-E33 (MS-7808) (SOCKET 0)
8gb DDR3 RAM
Core-i5 2500
GeForce GTX 660

What would you recommend I upgrade? Is a new graphics card enough? Looking for the most budget friendly upgrade options.

Thanks.

Thanks, currently looking at a GTX 1060 3GB or some sort of RX 570/80. Just a bit wary of cards used for mining...

Can you confirm the cpu / mobo model number ? the mobo and cpu listed dont match
Oh whoops my motherboard is wrong, here's the specs:

MSI B75MA-E33 (MS-7808) (SOCKET 0)

Intel Core i5 2500 @ 3.30GHz
Sandy Bridge 32nm Technology

Go get an AMD 570 4gig and go from there.

I’d suggest a completely new rig though as it’s pretty old and yes, a 3770 CPU would give it some further legs but you’re working with a really basic motherboard and an old one at that.

Thanks for the help. Yeah ideally I would like to upgrade everything, but would prefer to get the best performance I can for now and then add to it later.

Get a 1060 or RX570, its already a shit ton faster than your current card, i estimate around 4x more horsepower

Dont be stressed about the mining cards, these guys had to tune their cards to be efficient, underclocked them too as the PSU sata power cables would be the first thing to fail.. Sata power cables are used to power the GPU risers, and the plug would literally melt off if not optimally tuned.

Id suggest getting something with a bit more IPC performance, perhaps look at some of the newer gen stuff once you get a chance..
These quotes are for CPU, MOBO and RAM
Has iGPU

Has no iGPU

i know its evetech and after sales service with them is questionable, but just using them as an example..

Thank you, I see those are all in one systems. I like that because it’s simpler for me, but I was always wary that they would overcharge. That does seem like a decent price though.

I have a microATX case: Silencio 352 | Cooler Master

Is that going to pose an issue?

RE the gfx card: Something like this decent? Asus Strix Gtx 1060 6Gig | Goodwood | Gumtree Classifieds South Africa | 543694666

I don’t deal on Guntree for various reasons and I’d rather shop around here than take chances on being shot/mugged/kidnapped.

If you get a 1060 then makes sure it's atleast a 6gb version. You can get a well priced 1060 for about R2000 - 2500 or a 1080 for R4000 - 4500. I'd get the 1080 because it seems you like having you card last eons and that'll do just that really. My neighbour uses a i5 2400 and a gtx 970 (slightly less beefy than the 1060) and is still plenty happy with the games he plays over 60fps.

Thanks, 1080 is a bit out of my price range. Looking at probably an RX 580 or GTX 1060.

Upgrading your CPU plaform is gonna hurt the finances but we do what we must for the things we love eh.

i'D say all you really need is a GPU upgrade
Rx470- 4gb
as it performs slightly better then a
Rx570- 4gb

SSD to load into the games is also a nice upgrade.

Currently running an i5-2500K with a 1060 6GB @ 1920x1080.

Run most games on high, sometimes medium depending on the title. The Witcher 3 with most settings on full averages 75FPS.

There have been some amazing RX 570 4GB deals in the R1200 range. That would be my suggestion.

And then get yourself a 240GB SSD, something like this @ R655, or just for booting a 120GB SSD @ R370.

Everything will feel lightning fast, and so. much. better. With the 240GB, you can even install some of your favourite games that you are currently playing on it, for extra speed loading times.

Thanks, one part of me is like save money buy the 570, but the other part of me is like spend a bit more and get a RX 580 / GTX 1060 :D

I have a 120GB SSD for booting. I can fit like 1 game on it :D

I don’t think you can really lose out with any of those options. The only consideration is affordability.

I’m a firm believer in getting the best GPU you can rather than getting one that’ll suffice for now, it’s why I got the 1070 instead of an AMD 580.

I knew that the 580 would be ok for 1080P gaming when I got it but then I realized that in 6 months time, I’d want to upgrade. I sold the 580 for a small lose and got a 1070.

I should have purchased the 1070ti in-fact but hey.

Thing with gumtree, its randoms you dont see them ever again and they have nothing to lose/gain from selling something thats in poor condition.

You could start off with the AMD 3200g kit as that has quite a nice built in GPU in it, good start for a new piece of kit. And then later when you really need a better GPU you just plop it in and voila :)

Both of the links i listed gave microATX motherboards, so they should fit in your pc no problem :)

You mean just use the kit and onboard GPU for now? Will this give me decent performance in games?

No, you will have a terrible time if you do that. The AMD chip with built in Graphics processor is great for Laptops and the like but horse poop for Desktops. Unfortunately there is no substitute for a standalone G-card.

Maybe I should go the other way round then. GPU first then later get that kit. I'm struggling to decide whether the GTX 580 is better than the 1060 in a huge way. They seem pretty similar in that one will be better in some games and the other in other games.

G-card first all the way, especially because you don't care much for anything above 1080p @ 60fps. Bbefore I got my i5 6500 I had a e8500 Core2Duo BEAST. Only upgraded that coz windows was getting too slow.

At R2000, i suggest you get a RX580 8gb, don't go for a 4gb 570, atleast get a 580.
The RX580 performs similar to a 1060 6gb and if not, it performs better.

And I would say for the CPU, try get something like a i7 3770/k or better.

And please don't get a A320M, atleast try save up later for a budget B450M and get ram with atleast like 3200mhz especially for Ryzen.

3200mhz is also the same price if not a few rands more than 3000mhz.

At 1080P, a 580 or 1060 will be perfect. Then later upgrade CPU/mobo/RAM.

Don't forget the RX480 as an option too; faster than an RX570 and nipping at the heels of the 580.
