Hey all

My wife is currently looking at trading in our Kia for a 2015 Toyota 86 High M/T in burnt orange. The general consensus is that the car is fun to drive and well balanced but lacks power ...

Has anyone here got any experience with the 86 ? What is your general opinion on the car ?

My other question is, is residual ever worth it ? ... My wife wants to start trading in more often so that what ever car she is driving is always under warranty & service/maintenance plan ... Going this route (trading every 2 to 3 years) would it be better to skip the residual and pay a higher monthly ?

Sorry for the stupid questions, never bought a car on residual before :witless:

Regards :)

::: EDIT :::

To anyone that knows something about book value, is R110k a good offer for my 2011 Kia Cerato Koup 2L 6sp M/T with 102k km on the clock ?

a Toyota 86 is a reliable car. They have no issues what so ever. Have a Subaru motor in them as well and its rear wheel drive :p lots of fun to be had. Servicing them really aren't expensive either.

I work for Toyota, but this is my opinion on the vehicle. You cannot go wrong with an 86.

Since you work for toyota ... Could you maybe help me with a little information ... (if it aint too much hassle, I know I ask a lot of questions ... haha)

What would servicing this vehicle cost (general service ballpark figure) ... I really like the vehicle and would like to probably keep it after my wife doesn't want it anymore ... haha

The other thing is, the car I am looking at is listed as a "limited edition" ... Is there any way to check what the extras are supposed to be for the limited edition, I don't want to be ripped off if they are lying about that.

Lastly, where can I get the boot spoiler for this car, the one I am looking at does not have one and that is a shame in my opinion ... (silly I know)

I can't say much on the 86, as I've never driven it, but I have heard that it's underpowered, especially for a car that looks the part of a sports car.

Regarding the offer on your KIA. That's actually not bad at all, I just traded my 2012 Mazda 3 1.6 with 173,000km for R90k. That was the very best offer I could get, you probably would get more if you went private, but even then I don't think it would be much more than like R10k. Is your KIA still on finance or paid up? And if still financed as long as you can get more than your settlement then you can be happy.

Minor servicing you looking at roughly R2500, Major servicing anything in the region of R3500-R5000. The only expensive thing on this car are brakes... So don't go ham on them xD

Also the Limited Edition is a full body kit and wing at the back. Regarding the power of the car, Yes it is slower than most other sports cars because it's naturally aspirated. Toyota decided not to turbo the vehicle in most Regions of the world. Only USA and Thailand have the Turbo'd Boxer Motors.

As long as you don't expect it to be fast...because it isn't lol

My Kia is 115kw and the same weight ... so 147kw will at least be an improvement over what I currently drive.

As much as I like driving like a hooligan ... I take looks/reliability over performance ... I can only afford so many tickets ... haha

Thanks very much :) ... Will check the links out

Car is still on finance sadly, but I am still getting almost a R40k deposit on the trade in if they give me R110k

Thanks for the information, I will check if that car is indeed the limited edition, mind if I PM you a pic just to confirm ?

Then I'd say you're sweet like a lemon, at least your loan won't be upside down like mine is/was. I would ditch the residual seeing as you'll have a decent deposit.

The 86 has a bit of a torque dip right in the 3k-4k rev range, this is due to the catalyst required to past emissions tests. Some tuners are able to decrease the dip greatly with just a tune, but most need a new header with a tune, that would add some extra horses as well. That will be slightly problematic if you are on maintenance plan etc.
Because its NA car it has smooth power delivery, but less power than its force induction competitors.
The 86 is built with being a sports car in mind first. Its low center of gravity, chassis and rear wheel drive makes it a beauty in corners. A hot hatch in the same price range will fly away from you on the straight, but it will roll in a corner you can take at pace.

Do you want to go fast in a straight line or go canyon carving?

I've converted 1 friend into getting the 86 coming from an Corsa OPC, and another coming from a WRX and they both love the car.
My take is that it's a great drivers car and manages to be fun without risking high speed.
A big plus is that it can take a serious beating without a sweat and is cheap as chips to maintain. We've done countless skid pan and track days and it's only weak spot is the brakes.

However I'm not sure this would be a great car for your wife for the following:
1) Boot space is small
2) Getting in and out isn't the easiest
3) Rear legroom is a joke if you plan on using them
4) The powerband has a flat spot which can make traffic/daily driving a bit of a chore at times
5) Cabin is noisy
6) Engaging 1st gear gets a audible thud from the rear diff (As a car guy I love this, but to regular folk this may sound like something is broken)

They still asking R5k a month with a R40k deposit, upsets me cause I have like R4.5k, so I want to see if they can come to the park on that one.

I want an overall nice car, as noted before, my Kia isn't the fastest by any stretch of the imagination, but it was enough for me ... I am not the kind of guy to try race every guy at a robot so I think the 86 will be a good fit there.

I wonder if changing the exhaust will void the service plan ... the warranty is almost up anyway so that I am not too worried about.

If the cat is causing the torque dip, shouldn't a decat help there a bit ?

That's quite hefty, just a bit less than I'm paying for my WRX, what is the price of the car if I may ask? Is your interest rate more than 14%? And over what period is that?

It shouldn't, and they'll most likely sell you an extended warranty, if they offer one, take it, provided the service history of the car is 100%. Rather be safe than sorry.

And yes, IF the catalytic converter is the cause, then a decat dp should help, but on a Toyota would/could void the warranty.

EDIT: It does depend on which cat is the problem, if there is multiple, I'm not familiar with 86's at all

The Kia is relatively low, so getting in and out won't be a problem, she only really drives the car twice a week, the rest of the time I just to drive her around just so I can drive ... haha

We have no kids and we have used the rear seats of our koup maybe 10 times in 3 years and once was to carry a microwave home that wouldn't fit in the boot. (too flat)

They asking R280k for the vehicle + 14% + R4500 for admin fees ... ... I think the guy said 72 months

I also thought that the R5k was a bit crazy but I have no way of backing up my claims due to the fact I have not bought many cars ... haha

It is a nice car, the 2 issues if its just a daily driver is the torque dip the awful head unit. If I recall correctly its an the old Hilux head unit.
If you are planning on going to track days then the third problem is that you'll need to add an oil cooler. but that isn't needed at all unless you are driving it really hard.

The cat in question is on the header which is why so many replace it with an aftermarket UEL header. The UEL adds a bit more of the Subaru boxer rumble sound as well.

Excuse their marketing at the end but they give a good summary of the problem:

Residual might be good idea if you plan on trading cars every few years. From my understanding of residual, you pay the interest for the FULL amount of the vehicle while at the end of the finance term, you still have deficit of whatever the residual is.

Generally speaking, finance value of R200k is roughly R4500 @ 10% interest rate over 60 months with no residual. R280K would be around R6000 @ 10% over 60 months with no residual

Thanks for the links, really appreciate that.

I don't think I will be driving too crazy, need to get used to a RWD car first XD ... track days maybe in the future, but not any time soon.

A lot of people on the forum mention that they get the headers and the BRZ exhaust

The BRZ exhaust is hell expensive lol

I thought the BRZ and the 86 were near identical cars besides the badge?

Really? be careful, I may actually take you on with that offer xD

They are almost identical. A couple things changed here and there. The motor and body is basically the same.

My brother test drove an 86 but ended up getting a 208 GTi instead. He said the 86 felt a bit slower, which makes sense for a NA car at altitude. Either way, slow is relative, so I think it would be a nice upgrade over your Kia.

Strange, maybe the turbo makes the power feel more "readily" available, but apart from the 100Kgs lighter, they put out the same KW, just the torque is different

Haha, I can't even find pricing on the headers/brz exhaust

Still no clue where I can get the spoiler either XD
Ger headers off a wrecked 2.0 wrx, have an exhaust made, and i see plenty of guys fit an sti wing, city deep scapyard will posibly have headers that will fit, will need to get the exhaust to match up tho, wont be a direct fit, can also supply you with a no of a huy that can make you one
