Currently sitting with a Palit 2080 Super GRP in my rig, and I'm getting some serious CUD vibes going on.
Rest of PC is a 3600X, 16GB 3600Mhz CL16 RAM on a X570 board. Main drive is 240GB NVMe, gaming drives are 2x 1GB SSDs, and other storage is 2x 4TB HDDs. Screen is 3440x1440 100Hz.
I mostly use the PC for gaming (Open world stuff, driving/racing games, not so much shooters, so sticking between 60 and 120fps is fine for me.), and light programming/tinkering/3D modelling.
I prefer to game at Ultra settings (because snob) unless forced down to High due to low fps.

I did think of a modest CPU/RAM upgrade to something like a 5800X with 32GB RAM and keep the 2080S, but in all honesty, I'd probably not notice too much, and have decided a CPU upgrade will happen when Zen 4 happens.

Anyway, with the current state of affairs in the world (outrageous GPU prices), is it worth it to upgrade the GPU now, or should I hold out until next year sometime (when things should hopefully be better, or they might still be messed up...who knows) before upgrading?

The plan was to sell the 2080S for R12k and use a R10k bonus I have coming at the end of the month towards a new GPU.
That would be about 6800XT money, maybe even 3080.
I could chuck in a few more grand and push for a 3080TI or 6900XT.

So, question 1, Upgrade now, or hold out?
Question 2. If upgrading, 6800XT/3080 or push towards 6900XT/3080Ti?
Question 3. Red team or Green team and why?

1. I'd hold off for now. Unless you have a specific reason to upgrade, I'd wait it out.
2. 3080Ti, but again, I'd hold off for either next gen or price drop.
3. Green. DLSS, nVENC.
Well the main reason is the 2080S is not really cutting it for gaming at Highest settings. Around 45-55fps in something like RDR2, better in Horizon 4.

I don't use DLSS as the artifacting bugs the crap out of me, and I don't stream so don't see the need for nVENC

DLSS 2.0 hasn't given me any artifacting issues at all.

What games do you get artifacting in? Any OC/UC?

I got some severe quality drops with DLSS in one game only out of the few I tested.
This was in Control, where the photos etc would drop to like 240p quality unless you are standing right up against them.
And it's definitely noticeable while running through areas.
Other games the DLSS doesn't change much.

Mainly RDR2, which I believe is DLSS 2.2.10, but pretty much any game which supports DLSS.
I'm not saying that DLSS is a bad thing, but by the very nature of what it's doing produces artifacts, and I notice them, and they bug me. I would rather lower some other sliders than enable DLSS to get more FPS.
PC is stock in every way, so no OC/UC

@viceroy Why not OC that Ryzen of yours? At the min change the all core settings.
You should see a tangible difference.
If you have a good cooler, there will be no issue.
My 5600X been running 4.7 AC since day one with no issues.

RDR2 with my RTX3080 with everything on ultra at 1440p 120hz , and Dlss on, G-sync on . i am geting between 105 - 120 fps, sometimes it sits at 118-120 constantly.

Game is really amazing maxed out

1. Don’t buy in this shit market unless you don’t care to overpay (your card is also inflated in terms of resale value).
2. 3080 Ti GameRock OC for R26k is a giveaway, everything else is a bad deal compared to it (if MSRP means anything to you).
3. The AMD cards are too expensive for the lack of features they give you, but in terms of raw raster in 1080p and 1440p, you often find them running away from the Ampere cards with their shit GPU utilisation and shader stalling.

However, you’re at a resolution where Ampere with the wider bus width actually makes sense, and again, the 3080 Ti at R26k objectively gives you more than a 6800 XT at R21k, a 3080 at R22k-24k or a 6900 XT at a whopping R27k (what a joke). The HOF 3080 Ti at R29k is also technically at one of the cheapest price points a HOF can be bought for on the planet ($1950 when converted).

I mean yeah if I’m honest, I’d buy the R29k HOF if you can afford it. $1960 for one of the most ridiculous GPU VRMs ever, more filtering capacitors than even make sense, and an incredible cooler design that will probably shit on any other GA102 in terms of G6X temps (all the Palit cards I’ve tested absolutely kill in G6X thermals and Galax falls under Palit). That card is my wet dream and I’d love to buy one. I just can’t bring myself to sell another fucking GPU.

Man, when I was younger, I was huge into overclocking, and it was great fun, but ultimately, real world, it was rare to see noticeable improvements in performance.

So, yeah, my 3600X is chilled by water, and it works well, and I could OC, but 400Mhz, is not going to make much difference gaming at 1440UW. I'm more GPU bound than anything, hence GPU upgrade rather than CPU upgrade.

@viceroy give this wanker a shout @SILTECH786
They got a 3080ti stashed somewhere for 24k (or so the bastard told me) :)
That is correct we have 1 x Palit gaming pro 3080 ti @R24000 ext shipping ;) these were not to long ago 28/29k
As for the Palit game rock 0c Edt the price at current is cheap compared to what I paid R28500 x 5 units Yawn,HOF/EVGA wonderfull other then this I am actually gaming for a change 30 hours into control

Once upon a time there was offer to buy a 3080 for 16k and I said it was too expensive :(
Then I paid 16k for 3060ti a few months later :'(

Look on the bright side of life you can atleast game again ask those that paid 40/42k for a 3080 and 55/65k for a 3090 their sentiments, life is too short if you are by the means spend make your heart happy :)

Wise words :)

Stop being a weak betabitch and buy it already!

Goddamn neutered millenial Luddites.

if you have to come here and ask whether or not you should upgrade, be it a good or bad idea, then you may not mention the word CUD

you have been doing it wrong this whole time

CUD doesn't ask things like permission or "Is it a good idea?"

IT JUST HAPPENS

This is a wise man right here!

The CUD is strong in you.
