My wife and I are looking at getting a Maine Coone kitten from a breeder and I was wondering if anyone has any tips for this breed or a first cat in general as well as what would be the roundabout monthly necessities of having a cat?

The breeder should be able to tell you everything.
Mostly they need to be brushed everyday, specially if they going to sleep on the bed.
Males are pretty dominant,so if you get a male first and then decide to get another cat it will be hell for the 2nd.
Always have your cat fixed and get all injections.
Otherwise go check out spca there are real beauties running around there that will surprise you,and spca only keeps the tame and loving ones.
There are a lot of throw away cats,Maincoon's included.

You will not be able to buy an unfixed one from a breeder. Also, you sign a contract that it won't go outside ever. The maincoon community is very tightly knit

Cool cats. Ditto to go get one at the SPCA or some sort of animal shelter in your area. Maybe get 2, just to help out and keep them into playmates and dates from day one. :)

Thanks for the reply. My brother has a persian female(sterilized etc) and we will be living together when I get my kitten. If we get a male, do you think they would fight a lot or would they get along better?

He might, for the male it will be more like playing, but the small female persian might not feel the same.

😂Qayla(our persian) is around 1.5 years old, so I think she will still be bigger and stronger for now, at least I would hope so. Planning on getting a kitten so the maine coon would probably still be smaller even though they are known to be huge cats

I had a Maine Coon for 5 years who passed away a few moths ago :(

Such a beautiful breed, but i also have a Ragdoll and Siberian who are just as amazing.

If you want one as companion, then you have to take care of them like you do with kids (imo).

I have a maine coon lad (Odin) , he is 7 now.

Absolute legend of a cat. Talkative, friendly, and very tolerant of the kids. Doesn't wander, requires brushing regularly, and as is fitting for any creature under my care (my own spawn included) he gets good food.

They are a pleasant breed, but our rescues brought as much joy to the family as he does. Lots of unwanted kitties in need of good homes out there.
