Wondering how many carbies are keen fisherman?

Where do you fish? How long you been fishing?
Fresh or Salt water? Rock and Surf or Boat?
Edibles or Non edibles?
Favorite fish to catch?
Best Catch?
Fav Fish to eat?
Funny Stories?

Post some pics of your sessions below. Give tips to newbies. Share some spots (maybe) and help each other out.

Ill start.

I was never a keen fisherman. I figured it was always something the older guys did, or guys who have nothing to do and the best way to do it was fishing. Few years back I went through a divorce and a mate invited me the one weekend to get out a bit and stop feeling sorry for myself. Come join me deep sea fishing. I was hooked. I started going as much as I could. And when he couldn't go deep sea fishing for whatever reason, I started fishing off the side. Rock and surf fishing. It is now 5 years later and I wonder why I never started sooner. There is something awesome about standing on a rock with the sun coming up while the waves break around you and a good catch pulls your rod down. The shake of the line, the scream of your reel as the drag does what it was designed to do. And then finally seeing the silver streak in the back of wave as it breaks. But you still havent secured it yet. Now is when you need to keep a cool head. Most fish are lost when they are only a few meters away from you. You must be patient. Only a fisherman will know this feeling..

Fishing has a very steep learning curve. Its not difficult. But there are certain do's and don'ts when it comes to fishing. Your day can be either very fruitful or extremely frustrating. Is luck involved? Of course yes. But the guys who have more experience are more lucky than those that don't. So luck may play a part, but experience plays a bigger part than luck. For example: A good day for the beach is not necessarily a good day for fishing. I was very fortunate to be surrounded by guys who were and are still very good at it so I learnt from the "best" so to speak. And I am still learning.

Where do you fish? How long you been fishing?

Rock and Surf and deep sea. Dont have my own boat so when invited I join. Pretty much fish off the side in the surf almost every weekend. I spend a lot of my time fishing with lures and only throw bait if I dont get a hit on the lure in the first 10-15 minutes.

Edibles or Non edibles? Edibles. I want to eat my catch. Not interested in non edibles fishing.

Favorite fish to catch? Elf. Aka Shad aka Bluefish. Fun and give a nice fight on light tackle. Also one of the easiest fish to catch especially early morning on a lure.

Best Catch? Off the rocks I have caught some great Elf. yet to land a monster though. Also caught some nice size White Muscle Cracker and undersize Poenskop (Black Cracker) which i throw back. I stick to legal sizes and bag limits.. Lots of Blacktail. Baardman. havent caught big Kob yet but I dont target them much. Looking to catch my first Galjoen this winter. But that means I must get some redbait.. And that stuff will make you hurl and roar like a Lion if you drop your guard.

Deep Sea? Lots.. Favorite to catch is always Yellowtail and have caught a few small ones but havent caught big boys yet. Caught small tuna a few times as well as a lot of Stock Fish, Carpenters, Red Roman, etc. Tuna fishing is great fun, if you find them! :)

Fav Fish to Eat? Definitely bottom feeding species like Stock Fish and Carpenter. But you don't catch these off the rocks. Elf is good but fish must be bled. Last one I caught (2 weeks back) I fried it in butter and garlic. Was Epic! Much better than doing it with a batter or on the coals.

Funny Stories? A few, but my claim to fame in fishing is a broken leg on the rocks. Wave hit me off a rock into a gully and I started swimming back to realize something wasn't right. Shin was snapped just above my ankle. Took quite a bit of grit to swim back back though that gully with flappy leg behind me to safe land and then pull myself over the rocks to a safe place. I was able to encourage a lady to find my phone for me in the bag. She asked who she can call for me? I said an ambulance. She said yeah but isn't there anyone else I need like a wife or friend? I said yeah, they called the Ambulance. Gardmed needed to call additional guys to get me off the rocks. 6 in total since it was a remote area at bottom of long hill. At one point they asked if I have a lot of money because they may need a chopper. I said no, I don't have that much. Gardmed were incredible and I still think of their kindness every time I see one of their vehicles drive by. Definitely made me realize how dangerous Rock and Surf fishing can be. Pin in my leg with Hilti screws on the side and a couple of months later I was back at the sea with my crutches and moon boot. Gave the crutches to my wife to hold and she gave me my rod. 2nd cast I was into an elf..

Edit. Forgot to add.. My first trip back to this same place where I broke my leg I got some fish and was stoked. But I hadn't bought new boots yet since mine were cut off when I broke my leg. So I was wearing tekkies. Walking back over the rocks I said to my wife I shouldn't be wearing these shoes, they are dangerous. I don't think I had even taken my next breath when I slipped. The pic of the cut on my leg below is the result. So yeah, wear decent boots if you fish off the rocks guys. Lol at Dr.. While she was stitching me up,, She asked me if I am sure my eyes are ok.. :ROFLMAO:

One of my favorite fishing experiences ever was with my 2 boys. Said to them we are going to go fishing and we are taking the skottel with. And salads. If we don't catch a fish we will get pizza on way home. But if we do, we will eat it right there on the beach. They were rooting for Pizza. But as the sun went down they sat with their dad cooking fresh fish on the beach. They admitted on the way home that was more fun than getting pizza. Pic of this fish in the skottel is in the link below.

Share away chaps! give us your fishing details and pics. Some of my pics.

I grew up in Richards Bay, fishing surf and the canals around the Bay area. St Lucia was still a hot spot for surf fishing. We got massive Grunters and Kob almost every time we fished.

After school, got myself into fly fishing. Mostly trout, yellows in the Wilge and Vaal, Sterkfontein dam. Awesome days. Biggest trout was a 5.5kg brownie, at Trout Hideaway on a nr 16 Black Pennel fly, self tied. (Trout Hideaway was the record holding place for Brown, Rainbow and Golden Trout in its day)

I don,t know the first thing about pap gooi, or wurms or Carb fishing, but I did try some along the years, not very successfully.
I fish lures for Bass when out fishing with friends, while they pap and tik and keep nets (which i hate by the way) Biggest Bass around 3kg.
Have a boat, use it for fun and Bass fishing mostly.

I love rock and surf fishing as well. Got myself a whole heap of soft baits, spoons and poppers for surf last December and hooked a few Shad around 1 to 1.2kg, small Poensie, small Leeries, also a huge sand shark that nearly took my finger off when I tried to stop the spool, and the braid cut the tip of my finger nearly to the bone.
Got a huge +-14kg Cob and a second +- 9kg Cob at Kei mouth Late 2020, live bait. (Was released, so only weighed in a C&R mat.
I seldom keep anything to eat. 99% of the fish I catch goes back safely in the water.
I am boring like that. I hate it when fisherman makes a mess, leave tins and papers and bait boxes and fishing line around. I don,t like fisherman that don,t respect the fish, and the release, and the conservation part of it.

I never broke a leg, but I did fall into the sea once or twice, and I did save a small long tailed mouse from drowning late at night, when it got caught on a rock, surrounded by high tide. Not my most glorious moment, but the mouse is still sending me thank you notes...... 😂

Fisherman here mostly salt water but do abit of sweet water some times, like catching a leka big bream or 2.
Most fish shore and the bay area, caught a couple big grunters, shad and tobies too lol

Awesome post and lots of experience there! Thank you. Agree on the making a mess part and it shocking what some anglers leave behind. I even feel bad if I drop a hook and cant reach it. I am always teaching my boys to leave the beach/rocks the way you found it.

Bass fishing is good fun! Did it a few times in Tzaneen. Running around with a 2l coke bottle with line tied around it. Was doing it in the dark there once till I heard there are hippos in the area, didn't go at night again.

I eat my catch. But I stick to limits and bag sizes. But then again if its just me and my wife eating fish that night I don't need to take home 4 fish. 2 or even 1 big one will do fine. I would rather eat the fish I caught myself than go to the shop and buy fish that is not as fresh and then support the commercial fishing industry.
In many cases I have caught about 10 elf in about 25-30 minutes of fishing. Went home with 2. I will keep adding them to the rock pool next to me. Big one stays in. Small ones go. One oke on the rock shouted at me to stop throwing the fish back. I ignored him.
Good on you for releasing the big Kob. I feel the size limits of these fish and regulations protecting Kob and Leerie need to be adjusted. Dont understand the need to keep a massive Kob. Rather keep the smaller ones. Or even a Leerie. Edit. I feel Leeries should actually be a protected species with no keeping of them allowed.

Havent saved a mouse yet, but we did save a dog. Went fishing with a close friend and we crossed a couple of gully's to a large rock in the waves. They weren't big but somewhere during our session on this rock he suddenly asked me where is his dog. Took us a few seconds to notice something white sinking in the water about 20 meters away from us. I am still surprised we even noticed it and was probably only because the water was very clear this day. I reckon another 5 seconds we wouldn't have ever seen or found him. I dropped the rod and dived in since I was closest. When I reached him he was dead weight, not a single trace of life in him. I honestly believed this dog had drowned and was gone. I didn't swim back to the rock because I was now closer to the beach and my friend had started making his way to beach when he saw I had his dog.

I have never seen anyone give mouth to mouth to a dog before and I remember feeling so bad for my friend. At one point he stopped and then turned the dog upside down with his head hanging down to the ground to try drain the water out his lungs. Then went back to mouth to mouth. I said to him I am going to head back to the rock so long to fetch our gear. I honestly believed this dog was dead and when I came back he had the dog lying down on the beach holding its head up. And the dog was alive.

Long story short.. The dog survived. Poor animal was so week and for the rest of the day could hardly move. In fact he couldn't, and would only turn his head to follow where his owner was walking but didn't have the strength to follow him. That night apparently coughed a lot and next day my mate took him to vet where he got an injection to prevent infection of his lungs from the sea water. Dog is perfectly fine and still hops along the rocks following his owner when he goes fishing :)

I saw videos and pics guys catching Geelbek there off the rocks last week during the Sardine run!!:eek: You guys have some good fishing up there. often see catches off beach etc that are very rare down here. Like GT etc.

Very recently got into fishing. I'd appreciate any tips!

I've been going with my dad to Swartkops, and I've only caught stompies :ROFLMAO: but to be honest, I just enjoy the experience and spending time with my dad. We will sometimes take a little gas braai to make coffee and some food!

Tips for rock and surf, Yeah happily. Fishing in an Estuary? Not my thing and cant give much advice there. I have however seen I dont know how many posts about awesome fish caught in Swartkops. But I have also seen a lot about how contaminated the water is there from the crap that leaks into the river upstream. And as a angler who wants to eat his fish I just dont fish there. And its far away. used to go there with a mate but stopped when I discovered a few spots on the wiild side. My last trip to Swartkops I accidently picked my nose after I had just used some vrot pencil bait we bought from those dodgy guys at the Post office. I threw up like I was at my own bachelor party.

But all the guys that I have seen do well there are using live bait for fish like Cob or Leerie, bucktails or paddle tails or plugs etc for Leerie, Skipjack and Elf (yes there are Elf here) and then of course prawn for grunters etc. Lots of Grunters in that river. In fact most species are in that river. Even saw a post of a Mussel Cracker caught in Swartkops before.

Yup nice gts coming out in the bay area but from the boat, need to drop into the channels. Fishing in Durban is always best just before and after sardine run

New fisherman here.
I've gone out fishing twice so far.
Never been keen on fishing, seemed stupid setting up all your kak, leaving it in a hole in the ground and then waiting for the bell to ring while you drink beer. My brother has a little spin rod and does some casual bass fishing.
Then I tried fly fishing. Holy smokes did that grip me like crazy. I suspect the difficulty of the method and the very hands on technique is what made it so lekker. We rented rods from Castleburn and fished their dams, caught something like 20 fish between myself and my boet last month

Went up to the berg two weekends ago and caught absolutely nothing on Saturday. Crazy how it made me want to succeed more. 7 am on Sunday morning I snap a big trout, and lose my shit calling my boet.
The area we were fishing had terrible reeds all along the banks and while trying to gently pull the fish over them the line broke. I was gutted, then my brother told me he was still there in the reads.

I jumped in and sank to my waist. It was -3° that morning and still frost on the ground so thick our toes were numb.

Awesome pics dude. Once you have felt that tug you are hooked just like the fish. Never fished for trout but been told it's good fun on light tackle and because of the method. I have heard so many experienced anglers say that if you want to have more fun fishing, then you must lighten up your tackle.

Where was it you had the big fall, Blougaat? Guessing you were after some elf.
Wildside is great area to fish 🐟.
Kini Bay area as well, mixed bags & where I caught my first galjoen.
Now that's a lekke fish to eat!

Peg Rock. It's a spot near the start of the Sacramento Trail. I actually was recording video just before the break. I setup my phone to record myself crossing the gully. Then when I had crossed my line snapped on a cast. So i came back, stopped recording and made up a new leader. Went back and wasnt recording when I broke it. Below is screenshot from the video of myself about to cross the gully then in 2nd pic I am in the water neck deep about to climb onto the rock. That's the Gully I had to swim back through with the broken leg. Pics aren't too high res it seems when using imgur.
And yeah I have seen so many videos and heard that Galjoen is great to eat. Going to be targeting them in the coming months.

Ah yes, friend lost a bus at Peg a week ago.
I actually haven't been out on rock & surf fishing since COVID.
A few times on Sunday's River, a few cob & grunter.
Feel like I'm ready for the long walks again, but the wife been watching me like a hawk.

Many a bus has been lost at Peg. One morning I had a stranger walk up to me asking me if I have seen or picked up a flipper. He had been speer fishing there the night before and shot some cracker but lost his flipper. So the place has fish. Rule of thumb at Peg is to fish it on the low tide since that's when you are safer. But on the low tide there are two ledges you need to work the fish over. So many get lost on these ledges. The spot itself is also incredibly rocky like Kini Bay so sinkers get snagged for a joke. But decent fish there? You bet. Lost a few myself.
One particular case is my favorite "loss". Had been there all morning and didnt have a single catch. Got sinker hooked (again) tightened drag to the max and snapped line off. Out of sheer frustration I tied on a rapala type lure and threw that out forgetting to loosen the drag. It was about 15m away from me on the 2nd cast when something took it. I have never had something grab me so hard not even out at sea. It was so powerful it almost pulled me into the water. I was able to get my knees in front of me and fell onto my knees instead of into the water. I was nothing but a spectator. Max drag and it took off to the right down the coast. Wasnt on small tackle either was a heavy 11ft spinning rod with big boss 8000 reel. Cheers. It stopped at some point in a reef and couldnt work it out could feel it moving around. My leader eventually wore through and line snapped. Edit. There were two guys on the rock with me at the time and when it took off they said that must be a monster elf. To this day I think it was a Yellowtail. But we will never know.
And I guess that's where the experience comes in. As helpless as I was I learnt from it. Next time round, in those conditions, make every effort to stop or slow the fish down as opposed to letting it reef you? Rather grab the spool to try turn him. Anyways it was an experience I will never forget.

Well of your wife is prepared to let you out of her site sometime we can do a session to Peg ;)

🤣 She's seen my friends look like from the Peg since I've been out of action.
Coincidentally I told her this morning I might go with a few friends to St Francis & she said "OK"
So I don't know if it's a trap or not

That right there is why i love fly fishing. Crisp, cold, clear water, beautiful scenery and nothing beats a Trout of any size gulping up a dry fly.
Now start tying your own flies and catching fish with them. A whole new level of fun.

I only have one heavy nr 11 spinning rod for surf and rocks. Rest of my tackle is super light. I Flyfish wita a 3 weight Scott fly rod, super super light. Tippet as thin as a hair, flies as small as half a cm. Awesome.

Used to fish a lot when I was younger, mainly primary and high school times with my dad and brother and various friends of my father's. All fresh water because PTA is far from the ocean.

We had a couple of dams we'd frequent, did some weekends/weeks near brits and rooikoppies in farmers dams there fishing bass, soft baits mostly due to vegetation in the water and lots of reeds in farm dams. Did specimen carp fishing as well, the more remote and less provided infrastructure the more likely it was that we'd go there often. If you had to use the shovel, you just had to walk far enough from the tent. And there's always bass in a freshwater dam, often kurper of some sort as well and they're fun to mess around with.

More recently we've moved onto fly fishing and although very fun, it isn't something I can do a lot of with the multiple injuries to my right shoulder and there's no way I'd be able to cast lefty.

Caught some decent sized bass but never anything special, my biggest is around 3kg. Now carp is a slightly different matter, I've bagged some nice ones; mirror carp biggest was just under 9kg, have a grass carp that came in just over 10kg, multiple normal ones over 10kg with the heaviest being just shy of 14kg. Have caught decent sized rainbow trout but nothing spectacular.

Trout is the only fish we catch to keep and eat everything else is C+R.

Coming home with a fish is proof that went fishing. Smelling like a pilchard helps too!

I only fish with 11ft spinning rods. One is a 2.0z which I use to throw lures only. Then if I dont get a hit switch to 11ft 5oz which I use to throw baits. All the chaps next to me when fishing have these 13ft plus rods. I know they may help with keeping fish out the reef a bit but I love the "smaller" rods more and far more easier to manage. And easy to switch to a lure If I want. I also use those quick release clips so can switch from bait to a lure and cast out the lure in a few seconds. A nice size elf on the 11ft 2.0z gives me a good fight! :)

I have heard trout is good eating? And watched many clips of okes raving about it like Thresher Fishing etc.

I have a 10ft 3 piece loomis with 2ounce and 4ounce tips for my main rod and a shimano 7ft for lure, drop shot fishing, awesome fights catching with light tackle.

Nothing says fitness like fishing.

My dad was once told by his doc he needs to do some sport to lose weight. So he took up angling.

Nice starting this thread. I am a rock and surf angler. You won't get me to fish at a dam. Just my personal preference.lol

Been fishing in Langebaan and the West Coast and boy can I say it is one of the hardest places to fish at. Fish don't go much on the bite here and especially when its holiday then you can forget as all the people with their boats are the lucky ones to always have something and chasing the fish away for the side anglers. Best fish that I have caught so far was a nice 4.91Kg Shad, 5.5Kg Kob and a lot of blacktails. Non eds were cows and bronzies if you want a good work out.

Fishing is a great sport it requires a good deal of patients and skill. The most active type of fishing is deep sea fishing and its incredibly fun.
