The Gen8 Microserver upgrades thread

Where is the cheapest place to pick up the Gen8 right now?

Also do you still need a hack or additional hardware to use the Optical Drive slot for a drive?

I'm guessing Carb will be your best option to find a Gen8 - I dont think any supplier would be able to supply one new, they have been replaced with the newer Gen 10's

You only need to supply power to the drive. The FDD power connector wont allow you easy plug and play access for a regular drive.

I realised right after posting that I actually meant the Gen10.

But since then I found a bargain for another 4GB for my N36L so will just stick to that route for now.

Was it ECC memory?

Nope when I upgraded it to 4GB the first time I opted to go non-ECC.

So just more of the same to 8gb.

Oh, I see.

I'm not sure on whether to do this or not.
I planned on running just a print server and Plex server. Which ECC ram might be overkill for.
However I also intend to do a file server and still need to setup RAID on the 3 x 1TB.

Just a heads up, you can't use non ECC memory in the gen 8 microservers.

That's a great heads up for when I consider getting one. I have a Gen 7 N54L

I just wish it as easier to find ECC RAM

It's a nightmare trying to get memory that works with these machines. Well, memory that isn't R1000 for 4gbs :/

I've toyed with the idea of taking a gamble on this memory
That memory does seem legit.

Does Buffered/registered ECC work on the Gen 8 though. I know it isn't supported by the Gen 7.

Registered memory does NOT work with the Gen8

Yeah, definitely cheaper to trade up....if you can find one that is [emoji14]

so Gen 8 has iLO?

im setting a FreeNAS and that would help a lot if it does

Why wouldn't/doesn't it work?

****

Having Googled I see nothing at all works from anyone. I just wonder what exactly is stopping it, or if it's just a BIOS cock block.

*****

Seems it depends on the processor being used. Some people can post with non-ECC.

I can confirm the following modules work in both Gen8 and N36 and N40.

TRANSCEND 8GB 2RX8 DDR3 1600 ECC DESKTOP RAM
Brand: TRANSCEND
Model : TS1GLK72V6H

I have about 3 Pairs working , in my MicroServers. Will send some mods info with some pics soon, just finishing up my one cover.

Really? I couldn't get it to boot with the celeron CPU and non-ecc memory.

The little bit I Googled seemed to suggest that with certain processors (i5 I think it was) you could get away with non-ecc memory.

@The_Lerminator Could you open her up and show us the insides? I would really like to see how you routed the watercooling and that 2.5" Bracket!
And how did you mount the evercool CPU fan? I'm pretty certain the stock 35W cooler does not conform to the standard mounting holes.

Well done on those mods!

@Neko will upload some pics, I have to admit there was some challenges @kalith (The Brains in both these Mods/Upgrades) and I had to overcome. But worth it.

I was initially running the Akasa K25 Low Profile with the copper core on the Xeon E3-1220, and interestingly enough the EVERCOOL Cooler All Alu is performing better. We suspect it's because of the bigger fan. You get a similar size cooler and fan with a copper core and should be even more efficient. I just need to confirm if we enabled Turbo and will update on that and some temps as well.

@Neko as requested, the SSD bracket fit exactly where the two PSU screws are at the back - HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 2x 2.5" HDD Bracket by stanoba

As for the Water Cooling, getting it in and routing the pipes was a bit of a mission. I had to remove the HP Chassis fan first. I then gently fed the waterblock from the top down all the way so that the radiator was just about in the same spot as where the chassis fan would be (unfortunately due to the way the pipes come out the radiator one couldn't put it in the place of the chassis fan and put the fan on the outside.). Then there was the issue of the length of the WaterCooling pips, the rad could not go all the way down into the fan space because of the pipes and I then had to still mount it to the board. I fed the waterblock out the slot where the motherboard slides out at the back, with the CPU all thermal pasted up I put the board halfway back into the chassis, which gave me just enough room to attach the waterblock to the motherboard, and then it was just pulling the rad out slowly while pushing the board back into place in the chassis and re-assemble.

@Neko you are right, the stock cooler does not conform but If you look at this thread you will see it fits across - Active CPU cooling for the Gen8
We did however drill the holes on the bracket holes on the Evercool cooler EC155A 915SP INTEL Socket LGA 1156 / 1155 – EVERCOOL slightly, this was not required on the watercooling setup.

Some pics, the mount of the WaterCooling is not pretty but it works, as this was mostly trail and error when I put it together initially, I do still plan to neaten it up and put springs where the washers are but all in good time.

Waterblock on motherboard, unfortunately the only bolts I had that would fit was the watercooler bolts for the FAN. Fortunately i could get some RAD bolts online.

Watercooling pipes run on both sides of the Chassis FAN.

Because I designed cover I did not cut the chassis cover at all for the RAD at the top. As per original post you can now see the - Lian Li PT-FN03, Fan Controller, 4 Channel in PCI Bracket, 3 Speed ...
FAN's are running at about 35%, at that position, the potentiometer it can still turn all the way to the right about 200 degrees for full speed.

memory, not much, but if you have a spare slot

all i have done to my Gen 8 is to add a graphics card ..... since im using it as a HTPC - add a DAC via USB and it plays music as if its a high end CD player - and connect the graphics card to your AVR via HDMI and it plays as if its a decent Blu-ray player .... only flaw here is that Ultra HD capable graphics cards are extremely rare in low profile - so its only of use for Full HD and not ultra HD

but these things are brilliant as HTPCs .... one other small drawback is the long boot up times but once you get used to it then its okay

Any Carbies that I can source an ILO Lifetime license from?
