So i recently read that Telkom changed its roaming provider from MTN to Vodacom . Anyway without getting into the technicalities , my internet has become utter garbage . My Lte router at home was able to pick up 4/5 bar 4G and would hit speeds of up to 40mbps , averaging 20mbps . 2 days ago both LTE routers in my house dropped signal , 1 of them can no longer connect at all , and the other picks up 2/5 bar 3G . Has this switch stripped me of LTE coverage or is this just an interim problem during the switch ?

Is anyone else experiencing this ? Im super worried cuz im locked in to a 2 year LTE contract and if i cant even connect to the network anymore then im paying for NOTHING :/

1. I wonder if there is some sort of protection to you as technically you've been stripped of service that you are paying for. CPA probably can help there but with all their T's and C's, I wouldn't be surprised with this country.

2. I'm still accessing Telkom LTE (their own towers) but I noticed last night the speed was constant 2MB/s vs the usual 5MB/s or 4MB/s. So not sure if just bad night or these changes are widespread and affecting everything but it seems they are.

3. I was actually going to do a sim swop because I've had decent signal on Vodacom over the years (MTN is also great) but recently I've heard with the changes it has been atrocious for signal, speed and quality overall when roaming.

yea im really worried , its not only the 2 year contract that bothers me , where i live this LTE is the ONLY internet solution we have available , we have a business to run as well . I have no clue what im gonna do if they've given us the finger

Ah snap.

At least where I live I have ADSL but yeah. Internet access is in a dark place because LTE is pricey or lack of signal where price is decent. Fibre is not getting to everywhere fast enough or some provider's have crappy service/throttling due to number of users. ADSL has the upload speed issue and confusing pricing schemes

I got one Telkom 20gb plan on Black Friday almost two years ago. Signal keeps going from 4g to 3g randomly. Wife and I are on Vodacom. She says he signal also has been crap in particular spots in the house lately.

TL DR: Never go with telkom at all costs. Get rain if you got coverage. Super cheap and much better. I had telkom adsl and finished their god awful contract and boy am i glad i did not put them on my debit heheh, i still get billed and i have been in a battle with them for months now about why i am getting billed. They do not even want to give me back my deposit. every month its always a different story and bills keep coming. Last time i complained and they scratched off the bill. I have not used adsl in over 6 months and i cancelled the service after finishing my contract about 8 months ago. If you do not stand your ground, telkom will mess you up buddy. Rather go to them and have this sorted or cancell the LTE and you should not get any bad rep or blacklisted as they are incapable of providing a service that you paid for. In short they are in breach of the contract you signed with them hence termination should be easy and in order.

I have rain. But I needed something to supplement the off peak time

Telkom isnt all bad. I using telkom i havent had an issue bar maybe signal at my work but that was 2 weeks back it was being a bit iffy. However its fine now no issues.

I dont roam and i still get 4G signal. I think it really depends on your area with lte. I know with rain a few okes it said rain coverage is in said area but its not.

just in case anyones interested , a local community whatsapp group has reported that apparently a recent veldt fire caught some of the cables at the cell tower just down the road from where i stay , this may be (well i pray at least) what has caused my LTE outage , will report the fault tomorrow and then time will tell

If it turns out not to be the tower catching fire, you should consider adding a external antenna to your roof, I live 17KM outside of Rain coverage map and I can get a respectable 15Mbs down and 5Up using a Poyting Xpol antenna on my roof.
