As the title states, is there anyone on Carb that has experience with teaching in China?

I have been looking for a new job for months now since my employer closed down. After literally submitting hundreds of job applications in the last 5 months and not even getting a call back I'm losing hope each day.
The harsh reality in South Africa is that 99% of jobs are advertised as EEA positions, plus I didn't finish matric.

I have been doing some research and it seems that teaching English in China can be done without matric or a degree, although it's just a bit harder to get a job there without a degree, but not impossible. It seems like a good opportunity with a decent income and it does seem like a fun job too.

I see that there are many companies locally that offers the courses needed to get a teaching job in China, but there are a few scams out there. Is there anyone here that has done this or knows of someone who has done this that can give me some advice on which companies to go through?

Thanks in advance :)

I have investigated this much deeper. There is no way to legally teach in China without a degree. The schools may not require a degree, but the working visa called the "Z Visa" requires you to have a Bachelor's degree. Any ad or website claiming that you can teach in China without a degree is either a scam or they send you over there illegally which can land you in hot water, even jail time in China.

With that, this is a no-go for me. I'm rather going to study Financial Accounting locally.

iirc wasn't there a few teachers that went over that got arrested or something
Correct. They were scammed. They arrived at the airport and were immediately detained. It was quite bad. They were stranded there for months before they were finally sent home.

That's why I made sure to properly research this before jumping to the first company that offers to send you over there.

I know the girl personally. If you want to go overseas and teach without a degree, legally there are only a few countries. Vietnam can be done illegally since no one cares. All my mates are there teaching without degrees/working visas. Even the guys with degrees say it’s too much hassle to get a visa.

Still wouldn't risk going there illegally though. Do you know what the pay is like in Vietnam? And do they get free housing and paid for flights?

The countries where you can teach legally without a degree just ain't worth it. The max salaries are $1000 with no flight reimbursements or paid housing. Living costs average around $700 to $800, so what do you do with $200 remaining. The point would be to teach there to make money. Unless you are just teaching there for additional spending money whilst having a long vacation I don't see much worth in it.

Teaching in China with a degree is very lucrative. At some schools you can earn between R36000.00 to R44000.00 per month with paid flights and free housing.

Kuwait is a high paying region to teach at, but also requires a degree. I've read articles about South African woman that went there and said it's not worth the money due to sexual assault etc.

As far as I know (and based on when I last researched this topic), Legit Teach English Abroad jobs require a minimum of a Bachelors Degree and TEFL/TESOL Certificate.

Why not put some effort into completing your matric? Guaranteed you'll have more luck job hunting with that in hand. Kinda curious you complain that you're only seeing jobs for EEAA positions but you haven't tried completing your matric....

EEA has nothing to do with matric. It’s a nice way to say don’t apply if your skin color is not black.

And FYI I’m starting to study financial accounting. The thread is in the same forum as this one. Don’t just jump to conclusions before you don’t know what’s going on.

You code right? Check freelancer.com and .co.za . Maybe cold-call local small/med businesses and see how you can offer website security for them / updates / customization for X per month.

I do, but as mentioned I don't want to go back into that industry. I've tried freelancer but it sucks. The rates you get is not worth it. I'm busy with something else in the meantime.

So the question to ask should then be, "what is the quickest I can get a Bachelors Degree so that I can go teach in China?"

I have a mate that is currently working in Shanghai as an English teacher, his accommodation isn't included but his salary is well over the 60k mark for a half day's stress free work. And on top of that he reckons the place is tech heaven. Can only be good

From what I've seen most who go there are very happy and they are earning well.

To get a Bachelor's Degree is not quick. 3 Years minimum I think?

Yeah definitely, him and his girlfriend have already said they will never come back.

Bachelors is 3 years as far as I know, but I know some institutions offer RPL (recognized prior learning) options which take your work experience, courses you've done etc. to remove the need for certain modules that can potentially make the duration a bit shorter

If you do not have a degree in english I don't think you will be able to apply English teaching there. Because one of my friends accepted because of her higher qualifications. Even though it doesn't need a degree you have to learn Chinese to live there. It is a difficult language. I know it personally.

Just my 2c:

You should expand options, Japan, Korea, Taiwan are all great places to teach English and the pay is very decent as well.
From my knowledge you need a degree and TEFL certificate,

From what I've heard from mates in Taiwan, most cram schools and schools provide a work visa so what they did was go to the country on a tourist visa and look for jobs. I also know of people that don't have their teaching certificate and are teaching there currently.

I was curious and thought about it too and found many Youtube videos with teachers recommending companies to go through especially for Japan and Korea, get in contact with those companies and see if they can hook you up with something.

Well I haven't taught there personally a couple close friends of mine have for the past 2 years. China would seem the best place to teach as the pay is much better than Korea/Vietnam, he is only taxed a tiny amount (something like 10% on a 50k pm salary), his housing is subsidized to a degree(told me he only pays a grand a month for accommodation although he is living with a Chinese family which would drive the costs down a significant amount). As for needing to learn the local language this would only be a requirement if you teach in Japan as my friends speak literally no Cantonese or Mandarin and have fared pretty well that side. In terms of education I'm not sure if you need a degree but both my friends have their degrees. One thing which is useful to have is a PGDE as if you have that and TEFL you can earn up to 80k per monthin some teaching spots there with a bit of experience.

Check out a South African youtuber in CN that does this and has lived there for over 10 years, his TY name is SerpentZA

Top quality vids and talks a lot about china.

Update on my situation: I have now been in Vietnam (Nha Trang) and been teaching kindergarten. How it works here is, primary and high school - Need a degree in anything. Kindergarten - No degree needed. Language centers - No degree needed. Pay is pretty decent. Around 1300usd to 2000usd depends on degree/experience. Cost of living here is dirt cheap. My girlfriend and I spend a total of 6k for accomodation/food/bike rental. We have visited 2 countries since we have been here. One of them being Hong Kong/China, whatever you want to call it. Let me tell you, it’s not for the faint hearted. The size of the apartments are tiny, no lounge. Pretty much just a bed/bathroom and small kitchenette. Also the cost of living is double. So China may seem like a great option since you can earn a shit ton, but it’s no so great since it’s pricey to live there. Here in Vietnam it’s pretty good. Can easily save 900usd a month. If anyone needs a hand coming to Vietnam, just pop me a PM and I’ll do my best to hook you up with the correct people.

I watched his videos, don't like him, think his views are off-kilter, I think he's a dipshit. I'm still surprised he hasn't been deported. Like I said ...in my opinion.

Its your opinion, understandable. He says it how it is, no BS or agenda involved.
