I'm looking for a small car, and I have 2 options right now - A 2001 Tazz with 220k km for R35k or a 2006 spark with 170k km for R28k. Both are in fair condition. Which one makes more sense to buy?

That’s a difficult one. But the spark is much newer and has lower km’s.

My deciding factor would be the safety features. The tazz has no safety features.

A tazz still keeps value,so 5 years from now it will be still worth something, cant say the same for the spark, tazz cheaper to service and overhaul, ample spares,t hat said tazz is also higher risk

Tazz is a hijack/stealing risk. Also heavier on fuel and a lot less safe. Spark every day of the week.

EDIT: Not to mention you're going to struggle to finance the Tazz.

Toyota does keep value especially a Tazz or Corolla, from that age. very reliable and easy to repair, especially carburetor ones.

Not a Toyota fan, but compared to a Spark, will not buy the Spark.

That spark is R28k for a reason.

I'd buy the tazz hands down ... Reliable, it's an appreciating vehicle if kept in good order. They drive fantastic. Easy and cheap to service and maintain. Body work does ding easy

On the note of theft and hijacking: Look these days they will steal anything

Chevy spark 🤢 ... Like someone said there is a reason the spark has weaker resale than a car that's 5 years older

Had an old 4 speed Tazz for about 6 years, about the age you looking at, and wife still drives a 2008 spark LT she got new.
Having driven both a lot I'd vote the the spark, it is a better run around town car and I think it lighter on fuel. It simply felt more modern than the Tazz.
Tazz was a bit quicker, parts were easy to find (not that have had any problem with the spark) and it had a bit more room.

Who the hell would buy a Tazz in this day and age?
But the spark is a Chev, which is already a no go. I had enough problems finding parts for my 2012 Sonic LS, and thats a much newer car than the spark you are looking at.

My Recommendation is to give both cars a pass and go look elsewhere. It may be more expensive but you will be better off with an late 2000's Box Fiesta. Always think of after market support. My Sonic LS has cruise control, bluetooth etc yet just getting a fan belt for it took a week from my usual mechanic and the only place they could get it from was chev somewhere in the north that just happened to have a belt for it. I got lucky because the generic bosch belt they put on it tore after driving 15km with it so they couldnt charge me for the double the price belt that they had to get from Chev.

My sonic costs more to maintain than my 2012 Astra 1.4T Enjoy. Even a service costs more on the chev than the opel.

Thanks a lot for all your help. I ended up giving both cars a pass... Chev was cheap because it had a lot of expenses - shocks, tyres and headlights needed replacing, and there was a problem with the key reader (that reads the chip in the key). I'll wait for some time, save more and get a slightly better one like Byakugan says

I wouldn't touch a Chev, unless it was the Lumina SS (which isn't a Chev).

Chev don't actually make cars anymore. They get other companies to do so and then call it a Chev. Most of their cars are made in Asia and lack quality, reliability and any sort of enjoyment what so ever.

The fact that GM pulled out of South Africa, leaving and sort of manufacturer support gone, makes your life a lot harder if you can't get a generic part to fix the car.

Nothing wrong with a Tazz, it's just very very old and not an interesting car but it'll do at a pinch.

Try aim for a 2 year old Polo or a Up!. I prefer the Up! but it's tiny. The Polo doesn't handle nicely but parts are easy to come by and servicing isn't expensive (from my mechanic anyway).

If any car you end up purchasing please install tracking units trust me :)
Especially if it's a Polo. Most stolen car in this country due to its popularity.

Don't bother with that DataDot BS. It's such horse shit. No one tracks parts in this country - they can't even track stolen cars so parts are on the list of DNGAF.

Tazz ugliest car on the road i HATE it, the spark is cheaper and lower fuel consumption, the fact that its cheaper is an easy choice for me
