Note the cables definitely affect the max refresh rate. I tried a bunch f no name brand cable. They have limited my refresh rate.


Resolution Advertised 1080P but IT CAN DO 1440p at 120 hz. (see pictures below)

Gsync range at 1440p.
Minimum fps = 50 hence minimum refresh rate = 50 hz

anything below 50 causes the monitor to flash a black screen(tested using Nvidia pendulum video)

Notes

You need the Checkers Xtra saving card to qualify for this price.

Hardware requirements

Cabling

HDMI versions:


You need HDMI 1.3 or higher to get 144hz. The port on the GPU and the cable must be 1.3 or higher.

VRR over HDMI is only support with AMD freesync.

Display port

You need a DP to DP cable to have VRR on an NVIDIA card.



Problems


A DP to HDMI converter cable will not work.

Use either the included HDMI cable or buy a GOOD quality DP cable.

Laptop with dual GPUs.

You cannot disable the Intel GPU. However if you have the NVIDIA control panel software, you can set the laptop to always use the NVIDIA GPU. This can drive the monitor with gsync. However you need a DP to DP cable to do this.

Regarding where the panel can do higher than 1080p resolutions: The panel is limited to 1080p gaming. You can do virtual resolutions.

Advise regarding whether to adjust settings via monitor OSD or Windows software

AMD Radeon Display settings seems to do a better job of getting the screen calibrated to my liking than the settings on the actual monitor, I would suggest using this to refine the settings once you're happy with the monitor settings to get that sweet spot

Recommended settings

Gama: 1.20
Digital vibrance: 100

Red = 50
Green = 49
Blue = 45

24 inch settings

Red: 55
Green: 45
Blue: 54

Brightness - 75
Contrast - 50
Black Level - 20


Windows setting - Enable HDR and adjusted whiteness there - 29
Monitor setting - Changed to HDR
Nvidia - Lowered brightness by 10, increase contrast by 5, increase digital vibrance by 5 (makes a big difference in colour)

27 inch specific settings

Gaming cliff notes.

The 24 inch is ideal for gaming at 1080p.
It works with both Nvidia and AMD cards for VRR
The included HDMI cable will allow VRR on AMD cards
The colours out of the box looks better on the 24 inch screen(compared to 27 inch).

You need to buy a decent DP cable for VRR on Nvidia. You also need to do the Nvidia software mod to enable VRR on a non certified panel.

How to force Gsync on non certified panel

The 27 inch is a very thin panel and looks better. The stand is very flimsy and feels like it can fall over easily. It has a different stand than the 24 inch screen.

Ideally you would want a 1440p resolution for gaming on a 27 inch screen. The colours are washed out.

Hey everyone,

So I saw the post this morning regarding feedback on the Xceed Byte 24 & 27 inch monitor they’re selling at a Checkers (on special for R1999 and R2999 respectively). I’m not sure if it was posted yesterday or today, but someone mentioned they ended up getting one and that it was 144hz with HDR (HDR is mentioned in the ad).

People were requesting evidence but I’m not sure if the OP ever posted it or not and now I can’t find the post anymore.

I decided to go have a look. First thing I did was ask the salesperson in the tech section whether they had anymore info on the monitor ... they didn’t. Then I double-checked whether it would be possible to return the monitor if it didn’t have the features mentioned of the ad or if I wasn’t satisfied, and I was told it was possible. So I bit bullet and got one of the 27 inch models to try out.

For my initial tests, I left the monitor in the sleeve (I wanted it as pristine as possible in case I decide to return it). I haven’t even mounted it on the included stand yet, it’s literally propped up on my desk with its power supply behind it. I’ve even used the HDMI cable and power cable from my Dell monitor. Eventually I took the sleeve off to see the HDR properly in games.

Low and behold, the OP of the other post was right. The monitor is capable of 144hz, HDR and (supposedly) Freesync. Take into account I’m coming from a Dell SE2717H (IPS FHD panel, 75hz, Freesync - which I couldn’t use because I have an Nvidia card and to use Freesync with Nvidia you need a display port, which the Dell doesn’t have).

Let me expand:

144hz - I can get my desktop refresh rate to 144hz and I can set my games to 144fps. I’m used to 75hz, but it feels smoother to me. My FPS counter in Destiny 2 and HotS says I’m getting 144fps (and shows dips when there are dips).

HDR - Windows detects the monitor as having HDR capabilities. You can enable it and after playing around with the settings I could get it working in Windows and displaying in games (I tested Division 2, AC Origins and Destiny 2). Yes, the HDR isn’t great but it’s there and Destiny 2 actually looked ok with it on). It’s only an 8-bit panel, and I would guess the brightness to be around the 250-300 nit range (true HDR requires 1000 nits and a 10-bit panel). Most entry level TVs with HDR, even the entry level Samsung TVs, have the same specs (check TV reviews on rtings.com) Also, remember that HDR on Windows 10 is still a mess, though it has gotten better. I may test my PS4 Pro on it just to see how things look as I’ve tested other HDR monitors and TVs on my PC and they never look great with HDR enabled, but the minute I tested a console the panel looked great.

Freesync - the option is there in the settings, but the monitor doesn’t come with a display port cable and I have an Nvidia card, so I’m unable to test the Freesync support until I get a display port cable (if I end up keeping it ... a bit more on that later).

Panel - the panel seems decent, nothing spectacular. I can’t determine who the manufacturer of the panel is but if I had to hazard a guess I’d say the panel type is VA. It’s a bit hard to tell. The panel is matte so the colours are a bit muted, but it’s not as colourful as my a Dell IPS which also has a matte coating. Then again, I haven’t played with the colour settings, so this could possibly change. What throws me is that the viewing angles are extremely good, which is a known weakness of TN and VA panels. However, I can’t believe it can have a 144hz IPS panel at this price, but I may be wrong. 🤷🏻‍♂️ In terms of stuck or dead pixels, my panel doesn’t have a single one.

Other stuff - very creative category I know. In terms of quality, the monitor actually feels pretty premium. It’s very solidly built and the bezel and frame is made of metal, while the back is plastic. The panel is very slim, with a “butt” on the back on the bottom that houses all the connectors and electronics, similar to higher end LED TVs and OLED TVs that I’ve seen. It has an HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.2 port, and an audio out 3.5mm jack (no built-in speakers). The only complaint I have is that the Xceed logo X on the front is slightly crooked, but that could be my unit. The stand and mounting arm also seem to be made of metal, with minor swivel adjustment functionality.

I’m attaching a few photos I took of Destiny 2 and the FPS counter. I’ve also included photos of the Windows 10 monitor settings (sorry about the these, that was when the monitor was still in the sleeve). I also included a photo of GPUz and MonitorInfoViewer which I used to read the EDID date from the monitor.

Now stick with me for a second while I tell a tale us more ... mature (relative to the majority of ZAGA I mean) PC gamers will remember. A few years ago, when high refresh rate monitors were very scarce in SA, and those found here were prohibitively expensive, a lot of SA PC gamers with the means imported generic HFR monitors from Asia (i.e. no brand names). So the panels themselves were manufactured by Samsung or LG, but then Chinese manufacturers would take the panels and create generic monitors that didn’t have the full warranty of a Dell, or the frame quality of an HP, etc. and would sell them relatively cheap. It was much cheaper back then to buy these panels, even with import and duty fees (or so I hear, I never had one. Also, the Rand was much stronger against the US Dollar back then). Sometimes it would work out: you could overclock the panel to 120hz or 144hz if you were lucky, sometimes you were unlucky and you couldn’t, or you could but you’d have a few dead pixels. It was called the panel lottery back then.

I suspect that’s what we might have here. Checkers (or a company on behalf on Checkers) is importing these monitors really cheaply and rebranding them with the Xceed branding for Checkers). I seem to have gotten lucky with the panel lottery. I’m not saying that in this case there is a panel lottery ... quality control has gotten much better I’m sure and the yield rates for these panels are much higher then when they first started making an appearance. But if there is a panel lottery, at least the supplier and warranty is local, unlike a few years ago.

I can’t tell yet if I’m going to keep the monitor yet. I’m more interested in display technologies like HDR rather than pure FPS/HFR since I don’t play competitive FPS games. But at least we now have some idea about the monitors from Checkers, and the closest competitor I can find is a 144hz 24 inch monitor for R3999.

TL;DR - the Xceed Byte monitor at Checkers (at least the 27 inch one) seemingly is 144hz, HDR with (theoretically) Freesync. I promise nothing though (read the full post).

Review Checkers desk mounted monitor arms

dual monitor arms. Already set up and I must say, they feel pretty decent IMO.

Two quirks:

The first would be the small plastic piece that links the VESA plate on the monitor side, to the arm. It looks cheap and could possibly break easily. Everything else feels like a decent sturdy metal, apart from this.

The second is that It is struggling to hold my Dell 27" on the tilt. In the manual they indicate that you just need to tighten a screw for a heavier monitor, but I'm not sure I can go any further without stripping the thing.

On the bright side, I really like the cable trays which it has.

Guys, am I the only one thinking this screen, at least the 27" model, is an absolute piece of Chinese k#k?

The colours are terribly faded. HDR looks like an LSD trip. The Ghosting is horrendous.

To add insult to injury, mine has a dead pixel.

The only positive is that it looks nice. It has a very small bevel, and has brushed metal all around.

I have not seen that info posted as yet.

The 23 inch panel has a 8ms g to g response time(according to manufacturer specs).

If this is true then this is not a VA panel.

You sure it’s actually running 1440p and not just reporting the input resolution? LCD displays look like poop below their native (highest) resolution so you’d easily tell if 1080p isn’t the native resolution.
 
Would you mind publishing the timing settings used in Geforce Control Panel to get the 1440p resolution to work?

New info for 27 inch monitor - 1440p
Hooray if it is 1440p, but found the below ,Quoting this from another page i found

"You arent on that 1440p resolution. It's just your pc is tricking its gpu that the monitor is 1440p so it outputs 1440p signal to your monitor. Your monitor would then down sample it to 1080p so that it can output image since the maximum real resolution your monitor can output is 1080p"

" it's rendering your games at 1440P then downsampling the image to 1080P so its not really 1440P your getting but it does help your image quality all the same. A native 1440P monitor will look better then a 1080P one even when rendered @1440P then downsampled".
 
Well my Dell 27 ips at 1920 playing the same game shows less clear FoV than the xceeed at 1440p.

I will post a pic later.

Why don't you try it and lets us know?

Most monitors will say out of sync or no signal when you send it a higher non supported res. (That what the dell does.)

I am all for testing, I mean all my Qnix monitors I owned I could get too 120Hz when others couldn't or struggled.

Was merely an observation which I hope is wrong and you guys get the full benefit, if it is indeed 1440 capable, which judging by the info looks solid.

Something I found on my 27".

When I plug in the HDMI provided the screen is registered as 8bit.
When I plug in my DP cable I get 10bit.
I believe this means slightly better colours? I'm not an expert on this topic.

Switching cables I can't really tel a difference, perhaps someone with 2x 27 screens can do a side-by-side comparison?

1440p vs 1080p

I set the screen at 1080p. Then put two browser frames on the screen. Took a photo.

Then I changed the screen res to 1440p. Took another photo.

See the added space (pixels) on the 1440p resolution photo
 
Ok, so how do you guysget these things to do 1440 @ 120 ?
 
download CRU

Add below settings (this is DP - GSYNC). (HDMI is different)

run restart 64. Then select resolution from options. I would do a test before applying, esp if you have one screen.

HDMI is 120 at 1440p (no gsync)

 
Okay I am working on correcting vblank settings to push higher rates.

Note important: specify if you are using a hdmi or DP cable and nvidia or AMD card.

Can you download monitorinfoview and run it. Select view, lower pane, all display modes. Then past your info. This will help in setting up the custom res.

Anyone able to help set it to 1440P 144Hz on IntelHD 630 graphics using HDMI

I would have to test that by removing my nvidia card. I also have a AMD card.

Quite frankly I do not think the intel card can push that pixel rate. Try the 60 hz refresh first.
